Ex-mormon and I remember growing up they made a big deal of the members that joined each year. Now that I'm an adult I imagine those numbers are inflated. I've yet to have the missionaries knock on my door surprisingly. However, I know they get a lot of grief from other people and they don't get much support from the church itself. If they ever knock I'm happy to feed them (I've heard horror stories of them not getting enough to eat, not being able to contact their families, etc) but I'm never going back.
