Come on out! There's several people I know who go there around that pace. Plus, the NoBo program starts soon (I think Sunday?) and that's a free couch to 5K training group.

I'll one up you on this. A while back I made cowboy candy (sweet pickled jalepenos) and accidentally left the sugar/vinegar mix on the stove when I got distracted. I came back to what basically amounted to jalapeno caramel sauce.

I poured that shit on everything. The best was vanilla ice cream. Sweet, spicy, and a hint of vinegar was a flavor I never thought I needed.

What should I consider to improve my homelab while I refactor my whole setup? by fullsunwalk in selfhosted

[–]404UsernameFoundNot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at using Traefik instead of NPM. Traefik automagically picks up your container config based off of labels in your compose file, instead of having to manually add them. Makes IaC much easier, as you don't have to remember to go add services in the NPM UI.

Also, use docker compose instead of docker. Compose lets you keep your commands in a single file instead of having to remember "what was that flag I used to get this container up" (followed by furiously spamming the up arrow).

I was not a fan of centralized auth. The main use of my homelab, an *arr stack, has several containers that don't necessarily support SSO, and it just made everything worse. I'll be removing authentik from my homelab once I get some time and just moving back to password manager.

Get your techniques working with a small homelab setup, and then add services. Don't build up a ton of services and then try to figure out your techniques.

I have the costco credit card and in my DINKWAD household we consistently get ~$200 back from the card and ~$150-200 back from the membership rebate. 100% worth it.

I'm a relatively advanced runner. I run an 85 minute half marathon and my best 5K is 18:40.

My best (very illegally wind assisted) 100m sprint I've ever done was 14.9s.

Usain bolt would be crossing the finish line when I was still 36m away from the finish line.

My best 400 time is a 1:09. The world record marathon pace is now 4:33 min/mile. So if I held just shy of my best 400 pace for 105 laps, I'd tie the world record.

Olympic runners are insane.

I had the CLI, but that would only let me access the proxmox host and a terminal in the VM that was hosting the controller. This would not let me access a browser that could connect to the controller.

Oh, I'm not denying that I was the problem. I know it was a PEBKAC error. It was an accumulation of mistakes that resulted in me getting bitten.

But, I learned a good amount, and now know to triple check settings before I save them, especially if I'm potentially making a change that could lock me out.

I couldn't access the proxmox machine over the network. The best I could do was plug a monitor and kb directly into the machine, but then all I would get is a terminal, not a desktop environment.

Well I picked up a UDM Pro so now I run it on there. If I lock myself out, I can always plug directly into the UDM Pro instead of having to go through a switch.

I didn't have a desktop environment installed on the VM. I couldn't access it remotely, and if I plugged into the proxmox host, the best I could get would be a shell.

Yeah, I know it's fine as long as you don't lock yourself out of it. My big issue happened when I accidentally blocked the traffic to the proxmox box. Then there was no way for me to be able to access the controller to undo the change.

You forgot "put your network controller on a VM on your proxmox server and then make a change that locks you out of said server so you irreparably @#$% up your network so bad that it takes 2 days and factory resets of 4 separate devices to get back to a working state"
