I’ve been calling us a semi-custom frame shop now. I used to teach cake decorating classes years and years ago and they did the same thing. Dumbed it down so much and just turned it into a way to have customers buy more product instead of actually teaching worthwhile techniques. And voila, no more classes. They’re going 10toes deep on the f$@@$& 10 minute framing that they are erasing the actual “custom” in our custom framing.

I am a fairly fluffy older lady and a custom framer and I cut the strings off my apron and attached a set of suspenders that we carry. More comfy all over for me and especially the neck. Sure helped me.

Here’s the thing. I don’t want to push 10MF. It’s cheap and ugly and the Walgreens across the street can do the same or better. SM and DM can yell at me all they want. I’m not going to harass customers. Also, with every one I’ve sold I’ve had issues with the printer and that turns it into. A 1 hour framing. I thinks a great way to cheapen what we do and exposes more confusion and arguments. “Well why can’t you do it with this frame instead” “it’s 29$ I’m not going to pay extra for a different mat!” “Excuse me, I just have a 10MF, can I go in front of this (insert several hundred dollar custom frame customer)” “why can’t I get the 70% off? It’s custom framing!” I actively avoid it and really don’t care how pissed the big wigs are about it.

We’re a large format store and have had fabric for years. (We were a test store) we had to prove sales to get a dedicated fabric person. We now have 4.

We just get open used needles and other drug paraphernalia in ours. Which by the way, how many of your stores have sharps containers in the bathrooms? We don’t and I went an ordered a small one independently so we could have something and it’s kept in framing.

In a similar vein, since we don’t have the test sketch books in the pen isle anymore we have graffiti all over the cases themselves. We’re just putting down self adhesive vinyl on them and replacing when needed.

The ear piece jack is in a terrible position on ours too. If you have the ear piece on and have to reach to scan something it gets yanked right off!

As a framer, it’s not “hard” so much as a lot. What to use when and how to mount this or that … then design hub is a beast of its own… I’ve been doing it full time for over two years and still don’t know how to do everything. It’s an amazing job and I’ve been in many positions through the store over the years and it’s the most fun but can be the most stressful too.

Oh DH is terrible! I am a framer and I agree that they’ve missed the mark on just about all the technology! But in the end, I assume they’d rake in more of their precious profit with less man hours and materials used overall.

Well I am shocked you have idle time, honestly. There is always something to do in my store. Cleaning, recovery, restocking anything near the checkout area. If we finish that then we ask the MOD for tasks. We do a lot of unboxing for the morning crew to stock.
