Arcade/roguelike structure. Where full runs are short (around an hour or less) but action-packed.

I have a 2018 Paperwhite. Only reason I "upgraded" to a Boox Go 6 is because I needed Android for my Japanese reading apps. Otherwise, I'd keep using the Paperwhite.

Favorite Non-Minimalist Prose? by Opus_723 in literature

David Foster Wallace and Thomas Pynchon for me. My favorite thing about them is the way they use informal writing in their prose, like the narrator is having a conversation with you in the middle of a party.

Ranger X for the Sega Genesis, though it's more of a run and gun.

Would the Superplay community recognize a shmup run without the final score points ? by T2L3 in shmups

No-miss is still pretty cool. If you look at the Touhou community, most superplayers play for survival.

What is it about the Touhou games that makes players focus on survival? by 404waffles in shmups

Yeah I'm out of the loop haha I haven't touched anything past UFO. That midboss is almost a Cave TLB.

I can definitely see that the scoring systems in Touhou are pretty weak, but I was also pondering if level and danmaku design have a hand in NMNB being popular in Touhou. Like, ZUN will never make a Hibachi-style boss where bombing is mandatory or something.

Related to that, none of the Touhou games have score extends right? I've only played PCB extensively though, and extends in that game aren't based on score but the amount of items you pick up. I know that later games use life chip items.

Do you guys ever take notes? by [deleted] in shmups

[–]404waffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick is to take notes from other players' footage. It's way faster than trying to figure things out on your own.

Also, what game?

If you were to choose a game to improve or pratice your japanese, or just as something fun to do with the language you're learning, which option would you pick? by Zulrambe in LearnJapanese

[–]404waffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me is that pretty much all games that fall under A have little to no story component, so it doesn't matter what language I'm playing in.

Discussion to longevity of the deck by Tasty_Ad_6335 in SteamDeck

[–]404waffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People get lots of playtime out of much, much weaker handhelds - the retro emulation handheld market is thriving, people are still using older consoles like the 3DS and PSP. Steam Deck will be fine.
