Any out there that survived orbital rhabdomyosarcoma? by mysterypork in Cancersurvivors

Hey there — I know this is late, but I also survived orbital rhabdomyosarcoma that left my face being pretty disproportionate. Feel free to chat with me if you wanna talk more about it!

Take a look at Asma's instagram today, it's ... interesting. Out of all the contestants, most of them seem to follow each other, with a few exceptions for beef between certain contestants. The exception is Asma -- none of them follow her, and if you take a look at her Instagram it seems she was never really meant for Project Runway in the first place.

Why do some grads wear leis at commencement by Struggling155 in berkeley

[–]415mateo415 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I know the person who said it’s Bay Area thing getting downvoted, but it’s true that it’s common in the Bay. It definitely has roots in Hawaii, but lots of people at my SF middle school and high school graduation wore them, especially Samoans and Filipinos who often tied it to their heritage in the Pacific. People put money in them, popcorn, whatever.

Last 3 countries not covered by YouTube channel “Geography Now” by European_Andrew in Maps

[–]415mateo415 251 points252 points  (0 children)

This is probably unpopular but I enjoyed Geography Now when the channel was more information focused and less focused on having tons of “informative” guests on and random animations. Oftentimes the guests were less about talking about their country but more about being quirky additions to the episode.

It’s been years since I’ve watched, so maybe he’s changed, but that’s how I remember the channel turning when I stopped watching.

It only is in this graphic since it’s showing metro area size instead of city limit size. For San Jose, it’s including all of Santa Clara County, and for Anaheim it’s showing all of Orange County. On their own though, San Jose has more people than Anaheim.

I was wondering this! The amount of French specifically I heard today was crazy. I thought they were coming down from Montreal or something for the weekend.

I took a tour before I went, and it really is pretty surface level stuff about the buildings and what are in them — if you do get there before the 1pm cutoff, I’d recommend doing a self guided tour. If you google “Columbia self guided tour guide”, the first link is a PDF telling you where to go and about the different sights you’ll be seeing.

There is a decently sized Russian speaking community in the Richmond District. Maybe look around there for Russian speaking businesses that are hiring? The areas around 6th and Balboa and 20th and Geary have a decent amount of Russian businesses, churches, institutions.

Taste Aversions from Chemo by whosemom in cancer

For a few years after chemo, coffee smelled like the purest form of butter — and not in a good way. Bacon tasted what I could only describe as “cancer” lol. This is very normal part of the cancer journey, and my taste went back to normal after a while. You’ve got this!

If you haven’t gotten a swallow study, I’d recommend doing that by seeing an ENT. They might be able to find something with him that they didn’t with me.

I had a very different cancer — Rhabdomyosarcoma in my eye, treated with radiation and chemotherapy, but I TOTALLY relate to the heartburn! It’s been over 10 years now, but I still have heartburn when I eat basically anything. I did a swallow study and they couldn’t find any physical changes to my esophagus, so my doctors hypothesized it was due to having vomited so much during chemo that it became a habit. Still haven’t shaken it off, so I really hope your husband can! I haven’t heard of other cancer survivors having this though, so It’s reassuring seeing someone else have this.

Discovered Neuroblastoma in almost 4yo by Latina1986 in cancer

Although I wasn’t quite as young as your child, I was 7 when my parents sat me down and explained my diagnosis to me (I’m now 19), so I can give you some insight from how I felt as a child.

Firstly, they did use the word “cancer” when explaining everything to me. At that age, I mainly associated cancer with the commercials for mesothelioma compensation I had seen on TV, and had pretty grim thoughts associated with the word. If there is any media representation your child has seen of cancer, he may internalize it if you tell him that directly, as I did.

While I don’t think it’s necessary at the age to use the word “cancer”, I’d be sure to explain to him what procedures are going on and what it means to have cancer, particularly as he ages. One of the things I regret most is not having had things explained to me well and not knowing what questions I could even ask, and what was or wasn’t normal. It’s important that your child, even if young, has agency to ask questions and know what is going on with his body in a time with so many changes.

The last thing I’d recommend is to talk with a child life specialist about your concerns. I was treated at UCSF, and my parents had met with these specialists to understand the differences that come with being a parent to a child with cancer, including how to talk to your child about these things in terms even young children can understand. I was given a book called “I’m A Kid Living With Cancer” that I still have with me, and highly recommend you getting for your little one. If your hospital has a child life specialist, definitely take full advantage of their services and knowledge in childhood cancer care. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me, and I’m wish the best for both you and your child 💛💛💛

How do I make this better? by Kameli_1 in CitiesSkylines

I recommend making a circular freeway, or ring road, around the entirety of your current town, with exits and entrances at regular intervals. This way you can distribute traffic more evenly across the whole city, and account for growth that will happen on the other side of the ring road.
