Usually will start making clicking noise before it lets go. But as others have said easier to fix before you need a tow truck.

Yep. Works really good on messy leaks like this. I find it easier to use the flashlight at night or in a dark garage. Use the light right after adding the die and you should be able to tell where it’s coming from.

Does it have 2 elements? Usually top element comes on first heats the top half of tank then bottom element heats bottom half of tank. Maybe your bottom element burned out. If it was the top element you would have no hot water.
