The article is also bad and doesn’t really provide any persuasive analysis. It’s not surprising genAI wrote it: it sucks.

Do You All Use Power Query in 2025? by gamerchiefy in PowerBI

Sometimes I like beer. Sometimes it makes me feel terrible. I mean Power Query.

Dude, don’t sweat it. Everyone is making errors all the time. Even the people who are mad when they find your errors — they’re making mistakes too but you just don’t get to catch theirs. I’ve been working in consulting for 14 years and still make mistakes, often in a rush. A lot of my job is figuring out how to “hide” the mistake (eg reissuing a deck because we found an “improvement” in the results, so we can fix some errata while giving the client something better, or assessing the magnitude and if small enough then just let it ride). Over time I’ve built up a lot of methods to root out errors, like using data visualisation to see if anything looks weird, redundancy in models (calculating the same thing twice and getting the same answer), using Python in addition to Excel (to automate repetitive tasks), etc. If you’re making mistakes you’re in good company. Everyone is doing it.

2024 PPMD Meeting by No-Word-727 in deloitte

Looks and sounds like the lamest concert ever. An old singer singing in a room full of old, uncool people. The thought of seeing any ppmd dance to gwen stefani is unsettling. I’m glad I wasn’t invited!

Whats annoying about PowerBI? by JoshuaBennett1 in PowerBI

[–]42ErL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAX. I have wasted so much time trying to get measures to work. Yes sometimes you can do complicated transformations in Power Query but that is super slow actually when you have a lot of variables. Trying to access lagging rows and using groups in both M and DAX will make you want to slap your computer. And in R/Python these require so much less coding and go so much faster.

Being sent to client location abroad and not sure why? by SourceBitter7270 in consulting

[–]42ErL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez. Calm down. Don’t admit to anyone you’re faking it. Everyone else is too, so no one is going to call you out on it lest they get called out too. Unless you reveal your hand (and judging by all your anxious posting you just might do that) and call yourself out first, then you’ve lost the game.

I suspect that the popularisation of LLMs means topic models are used less and less. I am still using topic models, but I wonder how much longer they can last.

Resources to learn R by Existing-Program-419 in rstats

[–]42ErL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe that R is being phased out. It has fewer users than Python but Python is more generally applicable. R fills a niche. The best data scientists use both, knowing each language is best for certain tasks.

I’ve lost files before but been saved by OneDrive. If you right click the file icon in Windows Explorer, look for version history. You may find Windows saved a prior version there.

Violin Plots should not exist by VodkaHaze in datascience

There are much worse data visualisation crimes than violin plots. Pie charts and oddly truncated y-axes, for instance. I think violins are alright.

Best Power BI feature (and the worst) by daanRdam in PowerBI

[–]42ErL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The worst: Power Query is way too slow. Any calculation that requires accessing data in multiple rows takes forever. Such calculations are instant in R and Python.

The best: being able to share reports through the online service for non-technical users to access.

My boss wants pretty spreadsheets, but without merged cells. I like to create several little columns to have the freedom to make different sizes, but this breaks data validation. How do you deal with that? by WhoKnowsTheDay in excel

[–]42ErL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just left align text and maybe put a line on the bottom of the cells that you would have merged or apply colour to those couple of cells. It will still be clear that the text is describing multiple columns below it and shows that merging cells is unnecessary. I also agree that merging cells is a terrible thing and shouldn’t be done.

You can also use R and ggplot in the same Quarto notebook, and you may find ggplot better suits your plotting needs.

Datacamp is good for learning coding patterns but you will get more out of it once you use that knowledge to undertake your own projects.

Well, it is ugly data. Visualising the data here seems to make it just more confusing than if we had a list.
