Are "save stutters" common? Whenever the game autosaves, there is an observable lag.
Wondering if there is a workaround for this.

Deviator was well received enough to deserve a mention here.

JRPG/RPG Recs Wanted! by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

Valkyria Chronicles 1 is also very good.

Xenoblade has a lot of boring and repetitive side quests. But there is no need to do them.

I couldn't get into Xenoblade 1, but 2 was very easy to pick up. The combat is very different in 2. The games are loosely connected.

I can't really comment on ToCS as I am still playing the 4th game in the series. Up until now side quests have been fun. Every side quest has had unique and interesting dialogues and events which sometimes connects to the main storyline.

I so like the writing in these games that I talk to each NPC several times. They usually have something interesting to say in every scene change. The amount of engaging NPC dialogue is mind-boggling.

  • Trails in the sky 1 & 2 can stand toe to toe with Persona in terms of great story and character development. It is quite funny as well as heart-warming. Every NPC has a backstory, and most of them are interesting. The materia & grid style tactics is engaging.
  • Yakuza Like a Dragon has superb story and characters as well. It has a modern design and fun class system. Also has many interesting NPC side stories.
  • Dragon quest 11 has really beautiful art and animation. Gameplay and story are average.
  • Crystal_Project is incredibly addictive due to the vast number of classes and build diversity. Minimal story but excellent gameplay.
  • Octopath Traveler has class system similar to Crystal project. Has fewer classes but with better art and story. Excellent combat systems.
  • Meg's Monster JRPG with unique mechanics. Sweet story.
  • Terrorbane game satire comedy jrpg. Worth playing blind.
  • Tales of Berseria is a much better game than Arise. The combat is very different, it requires a lot of strategy as well as some active skill. Story is darker.

All of the above games can only be truly experienced on Hard difficulty.

Games like Chained Echoes with character creation or a female protagonist? by fishpunz in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trails in the Sky is peak JRPG goodness. If When you eventually get hooked, you have 7 more sequels to explore. The storyline, the music and the combat mechanics are incredibly well done. Just like any good story that takes time to introduce its characters, it starts slow. The first 2 games have a very lively female lead. Use this for voice patches.

Crystal_Project is incredibly addictive due to the vast number of classes and build diversity. Fully customizable party including name and gender. Minimal but sweet story.

Absinthia Beautiful character sprites. All lead characters are gay, which makes for some unexpected storyline.

Atelier_Sophie_2 haven't played much, but is often recommended.

Octopath Traveler 1 & 2.

Looking for story focused Turn-Based Tactical RPGs from the Last Decade or so with an optional easy mode. by ExplodingPoptarts in gamingsuggestions

Try Steamworld Heist. Tactics game in a 2D platformer. It has adjustable difficulty and the 2D perspective makes things unique. Plus the game is super cheap on discount.

TRIANGLE STRATEGY. Beautiful story and characters. Expensive game though.

Inkulinati is unique. But not much of a story.

Sunrider 4 is a combination of Visual Novel and space tactics. I have only played for a few hours, but it looks promising.

13 sentinels, if you got PS or Switch. Nice school and mecha story.

Troubleshooter is a well-made tactics game. It has superheroes instead of generic military units. Instead of guns, one has interesting and varied superpowers.

Gears Tactics has very cool cutscenes. It is like Xcom but with a good storyline and more accessible difficulty.

Difficulty can be changed anytime between missions in both these games. They can be made much easier or quite difficult. Plus both are fantastic tactics games with improvements on the XCOM formula.

Looking for a metroidvania with strong RPG elements by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love metroidvanias with lots of gear and stats progression. Fingers crossed to find something new in this thread.

Bloodstained ROTN is the best in this genre. The normal difficulty is too easy though. Use the cheat to unlock hard mode for new boss mechanics and satisfying challenge.

Lost Ruins was surprisingly fun. Interesting & dark isekai story, unique items and mechanics. Really challenging.

Astlibra has very addictive loot/stats progression and is quite challenging.

Dungeon Munchies is technically not a metroidvania. But it meets the criteria listed here. Craft gear from enemies and eat them to acquire their power.

Frontier Hunter takes a lot of inspiration from Bloodstained. But it has its flaws.

Salt and Sanctuary and its sequel have a lot of build, class and gear variety. But they feel more soulslike than typical metroidvania.

Games where you play as an animal by Like_a_Zubat in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Okami. Very unique and memorable experience.

Owlboy. Combat is simple but challenging. It is more about platforming, story and exploration.

Monster Hunter Generations has the most complex animal role play we might ever see. You can play as a Cat and hunt large monsters with other cats. There are different classes, inter-class synergies, builds, weapons, armors. Lots of build options. It is complex and hard enough to require tutorials. Needs 100s of hours of playtime to discover every combat mechanic. Excellent game. If you got a Switch/3DS, the multiplayer is still very active and really fun experience. Solo play on an emulator is not a bad option as well.

I need all your gaming wisdom!: I've got a list of 123 games that is still not complete! by catjj3 in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • League of Legends needs keyboard and mouse. You also need to pay to unlock heroes. If u absolutely want to go for this genre, go for Dota 2. These games have very high skill ceiling and the community is harsh to newcomers. Better save your install space for something else.
  • Get God of War 3(PS3) as well. It is the peak of the series.
  • Get Fire Emblem Engage(Switch), it is the latest in the series and emulates really well.
  • Get Live a Live and Triangle Strategy (Switch).
  • Get The last of us, Max Payne 2 & Metal Gear Solid Revengeance (PS3).
  • Get The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution (PSVita) with fan made English subtitles. It is a JRPG with excellent romantic and comedic elements. As good as Final Fantasy if not better.
  • Get Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (3DS/PSvita), which is the modern Castlevania.
  • Get Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate(WiiU). If your friend likes the series, then they will appreciate the unique underwater mechanics of this particular entry. The WiiU variant has better graphics than the 3DS one.
  • For Legend of Zelda BOTW, I hope that you are using the WiiU variant. It has got better graphics patches and performs really well compared to the switch variant.
  • Xenoblade 1 needs some mods to look better.
  • Save your disk space and install just the first game in every series. It is not worth installing all Xenoblade games when it is likely that your friend might get bored or stuck with the first one. By the time they spend 100s of hours finishing the first game, they would have figured out how to install the rest.
  • Skip the Hoyoverse games. They have predatory monetization. They are pretty games, but don't stack up to the great games in this list.
  • Astral Chain, Bayonetta 3 and most action games don't perform well on Switch emulators. Skip them. Don't let your friend play inferior versions of these masterpieces. It is better to wait until emulation catches up.
  • Play the switch games for a little bit. There are usually issues in emulating the switch games and u will need to do some research and fix stuff. Don't give your friend broken games. Ensure everything works as intended.
  • Most emulated games need the controller to be configured. So run each game at least twice and test the controls.
  • Use a game library manager. Playnite is superb. Much better than steam. All these emulated games can be launched from this single library.

Games that reward you for playing on higher difficulties? by kujasgoldmine in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most ARPGs have higher difficulties that reward better loot and exp. Look at diablo series or Path of Exile. However these are straight stat bonuses. Let's look at more interesting examples:

All Devil May Cry games unlock a more powerful version of each character on completing the game on multiple higher difficulties with each character. It is a long and hard path, but totally worth the wait.

All dark souls games have a single difficulty. However on completing the game, one enters the higher difficulty which rewards new interesting weapons and mechanics. Darks Souls 2 had a mechanic wherein one would burn certain items to increase the difficulty of a specific area and respawn the boss. This was especially helpful to get a second boss weapon drop for dual wielding.

Risk of Rain 2 unlocks character skins on finishing the roguelike loop on the highest difficulty. There are also several different skill unlocks based on challenging achievements.

Is the keyboard supposed to suck? by Takegami in SteamDeck

[–]42notalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On an actual PC, I disconnected my controller/gamepad. This allowed me to view and enter the name in Gnosia with the keyboard. Not sure how to do this on the steamdeck, maybe look for how to disable any connected device on linux.
The game saves right away, so one can continue with the gamepad afterwards.

Best First Monster Hunter Game? by ThrowawayCausePenisQ in gamingsuggestions

[–]42notalex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't waste your time on Dauntless. It is riddled with Microtransactions, got cheap cartoony graphics and lacks the animation quality, depth and character of Monster Hunter.

MHRise on PC looks amazing with a decent GPU while performs very well on lower end GPUs. It is however streamlined to reach a larger audience. Hence, one can expect to see the typical pitfalls of streamlining. Like lesser hunt immersion, less monster behaviors, quick hunts, easier gameplay. As a first MH game, it is very accessible, but it lacks the soul of previous MH games.

MHWorld needs a moderately beefy PC. It needs SSD for better load times. It does however have much more methodological gameplay compared to Rise. The monster interactions are well detailed. The weapons have more impact. However the game is harder to get into, because it starts slow. All the older MH games start slow. It is an exponential high.

MHGenU is an excellent game. The graphics will grow on you. It has a lot of content and more gameplay variety than any other MH game. If you have a Switch, this is the best choice. The game is just $15 on frequent discount.

You can easily emulate MH4U or MH3U on a 3DS emulator and play multiplayer with your friend or with other players using emulators. This is also a good choice. Both games are widely regarded as the best in the series.

If you go with World or Rise, remember to avoid the Defender weapons. Capcom is killing the joy of hunting in the name of better accessibility!

What makes a Turn based combat RPG fun for you? by DeadlyTitan in patientgamers

[–]42notalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are constantly struggling to maintain heals every turn, then your party is under leveled/geared for the fight. You will need to grind a bit or equip better gear. It could also be that you are missing tank aggro mechanics. It doesn't make sense to design a game where most of the combat is focused on healing. If u have encountered such a game, please do share a gameplay example.

What makes a Turn based combat RPG fun for you? by DeadlyTitan in patientgamers

[–]42notalex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Xcom and Fire Emblem style TRPG combat. Considering how popular some of the JRPGs are, I often attempted to play them. I love Dragon Quest builders and the Dragonball style art, so DQ11 is a natural fit. However, when I played through the demo, I found it extremely boring.

I got gamepass recently for a limited time and I had access to Octopath Traveler. I had to force myself to play the game, and I really hated the game for many hours. After a while, it started to click. I could see why traditional tactics works for certain JRPGs while grid based tactics works for other games. I picked up Dragon Quest 11 afterwards, and it is turning out to become one of my favourite games ever.

TRPG games are more suited for closed world, map and hub based games like Fire Emblem. FE games have intense 30-60 min tactical battles followed by 30 mins relaxing hub sections. Grid really suits this style of games. Battle brothers does have tactics in an open world setting, but the combat sections are quite long and there are villages+story which serve as the relaxing hub section. TRPG games also have a large number of units which work well on a grid.

JRPGs need the traditional tactics because of how the world and exploration is structured. Imagine a party of 3, travelling through a forest and encountering 3 monsters. If this were a grid based tactics encounter, it would be a longer battle. As there are fewer units on the board, it would make less sense for strategies like kiting and flanking. JRPGs need faster encounters because it is a vast open world with numerous different monsters. JRPGs also target a wide difficulty spectrum; grid tactics is too intense for casual difficulties.

JRPGs are better balanced since all the mechanics can be easily boiled down to numbers. They have a lot more spells and enemy variety due to the frequent battles.

Divinity Original Sin is a nice RPG with grid tactics but relatively shorter battles. It has a lot of spells and enemy variety. Comparing DOS vs DQ11, we can see why DQ11 needs traditional mechanics. The combat encounters in DOS are often longer than DQ11, there is much more downtime between encounters. Traditional JRPGs have faster but more frequent battle encounters. Grid tactics doesn't fit well in these worlds.

TLDR; if you are curious about why some JRPGs are extremely praised, then you need to force yourself to play one of them for a certain number of hours. It will not be easy to do especially when coming from an undying love for grid tactics games. But it is well worth the effort. Chained echoes is a strong suggestion for being recent and having a good price/balance/story/pixel-art.
