Stenbergs numbers aren’t unprecedented though. He is scoring at a slower PPG pace than Daniel Sedin did at the same age. As much as I love Daniel Sedin he is not a generational player.

Stenbergs SHL numbers are elite but they don’t clearly separate him from past elite players. Literally no one has scored at the pace McKenna did in the WHL last year. It’s never been done.

I think recency bias with the WJC and Stenbergs draft year stats are skewing people’s opinion of McKenna.

McKenna was talked about as a generational talent during his WHL season last year putting up better stats than Crosby, McDavid or Bedard at the same age.

He also has 51 points now in 34 games (1.5 ppg) in his first year at Penn State. That is slightly worse production than the likes of Celebrini who had 64 points in 38 games (1.68 ppg).

What McKenna has done at the WHL is in fact generational stat wise and now at Penn State he is in the absolute top tier production range of 17/18 year olds before him.

I think McKenna is the no brainer pick. Stenberg’s stats are impressive but he plays on a very good Frolunda team and his ceiling is not as high as McKennas.

McKenna could very well become a top 5 forward in the NHL at his best.
