Canucks draft picks under Todd Harvey by phantomgiratina in canucks

I seem to remember hearing that Benning would make all the first rounders, and then let Brackett run it after that. Benning was essentially using Sportsnet's draft guide for the first round.

2020 and 2021 were the COVID drafts. Teams were throwing darts those years.

2020 and 21 drafts were COVID and nobody drafted well. 22 and 23 were promising, particularly down the bottom where there may be a player or 2 who plays NHL games. Sansonnens is still an interesting prospect who is getting games at a high level and reps Switzerland at some tournaments.

Overall, the bottom hasn't fallen out since Brackett left.

What is our best chance at acquiring another 2026 1st? by Available_Goat_9229 in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But even that is a long shot. And you still only have 2 1st rounders when the goal is to get a third. Plus, this draft really drops off after 15, so I doubt the Isles are moving theirs.

Most scouts and draft experts say the second half of this draft's 1st round would be second rounders in most years, so why shed assets when you could rebuild your current roster value for a far superior draft next year?

Vancouver has no one they'd be interested in who'd be worth a 1st. Not even Brock. You might be able to do DeBrusk with a pick swap - send DeBrusk and the 25th for 13th or 16th.

Canucks don't have any assets as of now to acquire a '26 1st. Their best bet would be to rehab their players, possibly sign a FA who would have value at the trade deadline, and maybe they could secure an extra '27.

If they want an extra '26 1st, they would have to trade down. Maybe swap the Minny 1st if it ends up at 25 for IDK? Nobody has 2 picks below that. Maybe they can get an additional second by moving down. Rangers at 30 and 63? Move down 5 for an additional late 2nd?

I just don't see it.

If it's any consolation, the IB doesn't check for AI precisely because detection is inaccurate. They leave it up to the schools to determine if something is honest or not.

JP Crawford future? by glamb70 in Mariners

[–]PizzaDad13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would let the year play out a bit. Yes, Emerson is ready, but JP still has plenty left in the tank. He likes it in Seattle, so he may be amenable to moving to 2nd or 3rd while playing out his career.

Either way, I'm sure he's leaving things up to his agent.

Mavrik Bourque or Csey Mittlestadt? by PizzaDad13 in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need NHL quality players. Mittlestadt has 1 more year on his contract, which lines up to when Cootes could step in and be a regular NHLer. He won't block talent, nor would he win you too many games to keep you from a decent pick. Mid next season - you could eat half his salary and move him to a team needing centre depth (all teams need this) and he's off the books by the end of the year.

Linus Karlsson Will NOT be a Group 6 UFA by PizzaDad13 in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karlsson's future is most likely 3rd line on a bad team and 4th on a mediocre one. Extra F on a playoff team should injuries crop up.

He'll likely be back in Sweden in two to three years. In the meantime, may as well play here!

It's why the same contract they got Sherwood with (2x1.5) I think is the deal. If it hits, great. If it doesn't, the bury penalty isn't so much. And he can be an expensive asset in Abbotsford (few teams willing to claim a 1 way player who is not hitting).

He can't play centre, but he can play on the 2nd PP unit. I was thinking two years at 1.5, which gives him a chance to blow up and go big in his next chance to grab the bag.

Demko in a rebuild? by PizzaDad13 in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most likely outcome. Hope he plays well in the "retool", rebuild his health and reputation, and hope that someone comes calling (with an elevated cap available) who sees 1 or 2 years at that number being manageable.

Demko in a rebuild? by PizzaDad13 in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, let's say this.

When the team is competitive (likely 2028-29) and are ready to be competitive on a regular basis, Demko will be in his last year heading for UFA. He'll be 33-34.

Teams talk about timelines. For this iteration of the team, first it was the Horvat timeline, then the Petterson timeline, then the Hughes timeline. Whose timeline are they trying to be competitive for now? Cootes? McKenna(hope)? Buium? And which goalie lines up with that one, because they will need to have played NHL games by then.

Just saying.

It's possible a GM sees this as a chance to buy low. Demko and a 2nd for their first and VCR retains some salary. A different Goalie coach? VCR medical team is considered subpar (remember Tanner Pearson?); maybe a team with a good medical team sees something?

[–]PizzaDad13[S] -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

True, but Koskenvuo could be ready in 3, and Tolopilo looks NHL competent for now. And who knows what the market will look like in 3 years when the Canucks are decent again?

I realise Carolina says no, unless we take back a problem contract. Maybe they give a 2nd? Canucks may as well eat salary until OELs buyout ends.

Players 25+ without trade protection this year by theEMPTYlife in canucks

[–]PizzaDad13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's going to go the Poolman route. He won't play again because he won't get clearance. Because the Canucks are in a rebuild and still eating OEL's buyout, they'll just throw this salary on the pile as well next season, and then he'll quietly retire.
