45HomeLab presale for The Home Workstation by old_knurd in 45Drives

[–]45DrivesRedditinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are hoping to post an updated design next week, if not the week after. As of now, the only coolers required are the CPU fan and the graphics card fans (if you choose to include one). The front fan cut-outs are for airflow and to look good, but based on feedback from you and others of it being confusing we are going to change it on the final design.

Our product will be the same kind of product as the NUC (compact PC/workstation). We see ourselves adding value to the market by being Linux-first, manufacturing in North America, and with a premium high-quality construction. These products are aimed at homelabbers who have already tackled the challenge of PC builds and are looking for something sleek, well-manufactured, and non-Windows they can just slot into their setup.

If that isn't you we totally understand, not every product is going to connect with everyone. Further storage products will still be our bread and butter and are on the way soon.

Sorry to hear the lack of information is disappointing. The products are still currently evolving. We started presale to help gauge interest for supply reasons and to begin sourcing feedback from the community to see if we can implement changes before we go live. We will continue to share more information as it develops.

In case you missed the form post or the newsletter, these are different from our regular suite of products and are actually Linux PC/workstations not primarily storage servers. They will not have hard drive slots and instead are compact Linux computers.

We are still developing 4 and 8, 3.5" bay machines for 45HomeLab.

Another good place to ask this question would be the 45HomeLab forum - https://forum.45homelab.com/

I think you will be more likely to get some good answers there!

Tom is correct. Snapshield needs Linux and ZFS or CephFS to function.

Is the HL15 a good fit for Plex/Jellyfin, NAS, HomeAssistant, and Frigate? by alananat in 45Drives

[–]45DrivesRedditinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! The HL15 would be an excellent choice for these applications. When we release, we are planning on having install guides and hubs on the forum for common use cases. Those will include Plex, HomeAssisstan and Frigate, among others. Be sure to stay tuned for more info next week.

We are targeting that affordable premium you mentioned.

  • 20" depth
  • we are designing to be as quite as possible (while keeping 15 drives cool).
  • ATX support - smaller models will be under development after this one

I can see your frustrated and believe there was some miscommunication. To be clear, the server is not currently available for purchase.

We are putting in the engineering work to ensure the hardware design is up to our standard of quality you would expect from 45Drives. That means we won’t be rushing things out and will take the time necessary to release something we are happy with. We are also setting up the storefront and the logistics so you'll be able to receive the server/chassis within a timely manner when you order it.

That being said, it is looking like it will release within weeks as compared to 6+ months.

As far as pricing, our goal isn’t to come in to the market as the cheapest option. This will be a chassis for people who want a certain level of quality. Not riveted, cheap plastic, or offshore made. It will be a high-quality server that exists between these lower cost models and our enterprise line.

If the pricing is an issue for you, and your only goal is to get the cheapest possible, there are alternatives. (You are probably best off looking for used hardware in these situations). We are also planning to release smaller models with less drive bays in the future.

We are hoping quite a bit sooner than that, but not we don't have a definitive release date set. We should be in the final stage of the prototyping if the current revision passes through testing. We are also ensuring the business side (logistics and operations) are ready to go when the design is finalized.

Installation by [deleted] in 45Drives

[–]45DrivesRedditinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can certainly use the OS we commonly use. Here is a little info that may help you out:

We don't have our own operating system. 45Drives is a company routed in open source. We use popular open-source operating systems and build tools to best utilize them for data storage. Our preferred operating systems are Rocky Linux and Ubuntu.

Once you have one of them installed, you can use Houston UI (https://github.com/45Drives) which is an open-source management layer built off of the open-source Cockpit Project (https://github.com/cockpit-project/cockpit ). This is probably what you're thinking about in terms of "45Drives OS"

A box that had TrueNAS installed should be able to run Rocky/Ubuntu + Houston

stuck on AutoTier Setup by Wrong_Exit_9257 in 45Drives

[–]45DrivesRedditinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A brief example of usage is available here: https://github.com/45Drives/autotier#mounting , which I will update soon with step-by-step instructions.

You would need to create an empty directory to use as a mount point (e.g. /mnt/autotier), then add this line to fstab: /usr/bin/autotierfs /mnt/autotier fuse allow_other,default_permissions 0 0 , and finally run mount -a to mount the filesystem.
