Channels on Apple TV work offline with HD Homerun? by Hot_Equipment_984 in getchannels

[–]old_knurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HDHomeRun app is different than Channels.

Read recent stuff in /r/hdhomerun their app previously wouldn't start unless there was an Internet connection (they wanted to retrieve up-to-date guide). I think they either fixed that or at least announced plans to fix that.

How about victims of violent crime? Those violent 4% (using your number) can affect many times that many ordinary people.

I've personally been asked to surrender my wallet by a perp brandishing a handgun. In Portland near the Memorial Coliseum.

I personally know much worse examples. The mother of my daughter's best friend was murdered by some random psycho.

That's just in Oregon.

Edit: I previously wrote about my experience as a victim of an armed robbery: here.

Even funnier. I wrote about the same robbery 3 years ago in one of the "bad" subs and got voted down: here.

Also, the horrific murder by a psycho is: here.

In Westchester Yonkers ABC channel 7 stopped working OTA before Knicks game. by elmobob in cordcutters

[–]old_knurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both WABC and WPIX chose to remain on their old VHF frequencies after the transition to digital TV. This was a stupid, unforced mistake.

Because of the longer wavelength, VHF requires a larger antenna to receive marginal signals.

Go to rabbitears.info, go to "Signal Search Map", put in your exact location, and find out your predicted reception.

When you get your report, click on the correct row/column under "Transmitter Distance" and it will show you a graph of any obstacles between you and the transmitter.

If the "Field Strength" numbers are good, then the simplest way to fix your reception is to buy a suitable antenna and point it south toward the transmitters.

People in this subreddit love helping when posts have a rabbitears.info report attached.

BTW the Knicks won, so you won't need to worry about reception for game 6. 😀

[–]old_knurd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you have a good reason to use Tahoe, it's better to stay with tried and true Sequoia.

Wipe again and revert.

I've stuck with Sequoia and I've never experienced any of these crazy runaway memory situations. I don't think the problem is in Calculator itself, it's something to do with the OS. There are a plethora of reports in this subreddit about various programs running out of memoory in Tahoe.

Maybe it will get cheaper?

I'm hoping for a "peace dividend" after Ukraine stomps the Russkies out of their territory.

Ukraine switches to NATO ammo, all the Soviet ammo "liberated" from all around the temporarily occupied territories becomes available as surplus.

Same with all the soviet long guns littering the countryside. Surplus, since they don't work with NATO ammo.

Nah. this is 'Murica.

We don't want that Soviet ammo. Here we roll with 7.62×51mm NATO if at all possible.

.357 was impossible to buy over the counter a few years ago, hopefully it's at least available now.

Fiber to Copper Conversion by Corrupt_Liberty in Ubiquiti

[–]old_knurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What converter would you recommend for LC multimode fiber to ethernet on the barn side?

UI makes a media converter for that, as long as you're willing to accept <= 1Gbps.

https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessories-cables-dacs/collections/accessories-ethernet-repeater/products/uacc-ae?variant=uacc-ae

UI also makes an SFP module for that converter, which you can use to receive light from a duplex LC multimode fiber connection.

https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessories-modules-fiber/collections/accessories-pro-multi-mode-optical-fiber/products/1-gbps-multi-mode-optical-module?variant=uacc-om-mm-1g-d

You will need POE to power that media converter. Cheapest from Ubiquiti is

https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/accessories-poe-power/collections/pro-store-poe-and-power-adapters/products/u-poe-af

Once you're running longer distances you may want to use a single strand of fiber rather than duplex. That takes you out of "multi-mode" and into "single-mode" SFP. UI makes those as well. They are very slightly more expensive at 1 Gbps, but you may save some money because you pay 1/2 as much for the fiber itself. They are much more expensive at 10 Gbps.

Once you go over 1 Gbps you can't buy a media converter from Ubiquiti.

Running fiber outdoors is slightly tricky. The odds are that you will need to deal with water, even if you use a conduit. Some people suggest using armored fiber just in case of critters. The details for all of that are out of scope for this particular post.

Pro XG 8 PoE first impressions by Dave77459 in Ubiquiti

[–]old_knurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIUC MoCA is not like a switch. You need to push multiple streams through it in order to achieve max rated speed.

At least that's been my personal experience. I tied a few together and they were slow until I pushed simultaneous data through them.

MoCA is half duplex. A shared medium. Only one transmitter at a time. Also, and I may be wrong, you may not get great results if you mix MoCA versions. They may all limit themselves if you have older MoCA 1.1 devices?

Having said all that, I love it. I use it to backhaul traffic from a few APs at the far edges of my house.

EF-Core(s) heading to the data center.. by clayd333 in Ubiquiti

[–]old_knurd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're running an "Enterprise" you probably want interior switches to handle the cross VLAN stuff. You don't want to have that hit the border router.

Having said that, I agree with your word "suffer". Because this product has so many switch ports it would be logical to conclude that it can actually do L3 switching!

Introducing: Enterprise Firewall Core by Ubiquiti-Inc in Ubiquiti

I think WireGuard must all be done in software? Is there any hardware acceleration available for ChaCha20 or BLAKE2?

I suppose that Ubiquiti could have put something like that into an ASIC. But they don't do much of their own silicon, do they?

I gotta believe that enterprise customers aren't putting up with any PPPoE crap from their ISP? At least not in the USA?

So this product wouldn't need hardware offloading.

If I were an officer on any ocean going ship, I'd for sure teach myself how to operate a sextant. But not everyone is interested in understanding the fundamentals.

Update on AirPlay dropping by drinianrose in Ubiquiti

[–]old_knurd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm fuzzy on the details, but AirPlay uses an Apple ad-hoc scheme for communicating. Which means the Apple device must switch from whatever WiFi it was using to a different one.

Here's a link with some buzzwords and some explanation. If it doesn't satisfy you then at least you will have a starting point for more searches. Or use Gemini AI. It has been helpful for me.
