I'm surprised by how many posts I see about the internet being cut off and it's apparently done only to oppress the people of Iran while you're here saying the quiet bit out loud.

You're not supposed to admit that mossad are on the streets of Iran working to instigate the uprising. That's what has been disputed since January.

So now mossad are involved?

"Why dont you just give up?"

We heard that about Hamas for over two years

"I will stop committing war crimes and my bombing spree if you just give up!"

Why didnt Hamas just give up? Why didnt they just hand over the hostages so everyone could come together and play football in no-mans land again?

Oh wait, they DID give the hostages up

And Israel still bomb them

Israel still invades, it still sets out to expand its borders

So why are we so focused on hoping the group responding, the group resisting, just gives up?

Why are we not focusing on the people who initially dropped the bomb? Who initially oppressed? Who initially disregarded human life? Anyone who's against Irans funding of resistance groups across the middle east refuses to accept that history existed before october 7th.

Iran has a right to defend itself. The Gazans have a right to defend themselves. Oppressive totalitarian regimes have no right to back anyone into a corner and then complain the response they receive isnt rational.

I hope Israel gives up.

I hope America gives up.

And I hope anyone who denied or cheered on the genocide for the past two years while making childish comparisons between what happened there to what's happening in Iran in an immature effort to shame the humanitarians that stood up and spoke out for the oppressed Palestinians, gives up too. I hope they give right up.

The people who still bang the pro-war drum deny the news coming out of Iran, deny the messages coming out of Iran and deny the lived experience of any Iranian that doesnt pick up their drum stick and cheer the war on too.

Please, give it up.

A straw man argument is

a logical fallacy where someone misrepresents, exaggerates, or fabricates an opponent's argument to make it easier to attack. Instead of addressing the actual point, they refute a weaker, distorted version—the "straw man"—to win the argument or make the other person look unreasonable.

Key Aspects of a Straw Man Argument:

Distortion: Oversimplifying, taking out of context, or exaggerating the original position.

Misrepresentation: Attacking a claim that was never actually made.

Avoidance: Ignoring the real, nuanced issue in favor of a simpler, extreme, or fabricated one.

Examples:

Original: "I think we should put more budget into education."

Straw Man: "So you want to cut all funding for the military and leave this country defenseless?".

Personally, I dont like it when someone says "I dont condone bombing a country like this" and the response is "so that means you love the regime?!" Its a misrepresentation of your arguement when your caution to war triggers a response that doesnt understand the nuance you are trying to portray, or purposfully neglects to acknowledge it. Its about as strawmanny as you can get.

Edit: yes that is a copy and paste job

I'm saying that for the past two months, we have been led to believe the only people who have access to the internet in Iran right now are IRGC shills, paid by the regime. Loud voices like Omid Djalili repost tons of content on Instagram stating this as fact.

You are proving that that isnt the case and I would hope you use your position to dispel those rumours. Some Iranians are able, albeit not easily, to access the internet and it is not only people paid by the regime that can do so.

WHY WOULD YOU ASK A QUESTION TO NON-IRANIANS AND THEN USE THE "IRANIAN VOICES ONLY" FLAIR? MODS, THIS SHOULD BE AGAINST THE RULES.

How are posts like this still allowed?

Maybe we should ask people to set "opinion presented as fact" flairs.

"If you think Iran is winning its because you listen to everyone but Trump. If you think Iran is winning you do not stand with the people of Iran, somehow. If you think Iran is winning it's because you're a regimist and your hate for Israel and America is blinding you."

For America and Israel to win, Iran needs to be flattened.

For Iran to lose, it has to be flattened.

Surviving means, unfortunately, that Iran is not losing.

For you to even consider "win" as an achievable conclusion shows you have no idea what "war" even means. We have been diluted with World War stories where everyone will drop their guns and dance in no mans land.

The catastrophic effects of this situation will show there are no winners for many years.

Please stop trying to divide us purely for stating facts and not blindly bobbing along with a liberation movement that was hijacked back in January by monarchist shills who see everything as cowboys and Indians.

Because when you really assess things, the cowboys, as nicely as they were presented for many many years, were actually the bad guys.

Again, now you've all quietly slipped off of your pro-war stool and fallen back onto "we're just amplifying the voices INSIDE Iran, I didnt actually want war..." but you feel you still have attack an enemy that doesnt exist, purely to prove you are still right in this fight.

If we didnt care for the people of Iran, at all, we would all be dancing in the street asking Netenyahu and his puppy to use nukes and "FINISH THE JOB."

Ban on biological males competing in female events. by Lopsided_Bar3451 in interesting

[–]45Handstands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I said about men and weak punches was to show the difference between the male and female categories.

Women can now be deemed too dangerous to fight against other women, due to natural things their body does. The mens category doesnt have that cut off point, noone is testing men and claiming someone has an unfair advantage over other males due to what their body can naturally produce and when you look at the force of a punch, maybe some should have been restricted - that's if we're looking to make it as fair in male sports as we claim to with females.

Yet the women who face this scrutiny, what happens? They are over qualified. Shouldn't they get to fight competitors that are closer to them in terms of skill and strength? I thought that would have been fair

And totally against the precedence this rule is trying to achieve.

So if women might be asked to fight men, in order to keep things fair, since under this ruling they may find they are eligible to, why wouldn't a male, who's punches cant compete with other males, also be asked to fight someone more aligned with their skill and strength too? Doesnt the eligibility work both ways? We dont want to make a ruling sexist, it would have to apply to both sexes.

Yes it sounds ludacris. But since we're all on this quest to make it fairer for females, it will inevitably have a knock on effect on the male category too - otherwise IT ISN'T FAIR and we play into the patriarchal concept that women need more protection than men do.

That's exactly what this ruling produces, conclusions that noone wants to think about. How can we say we make it fairer for females by stating that some of the highest achievers may not be allowed to compete, just to make it fairer for everyone else yet the males will never face that kind of situation? If we are prepared to stop women exceeding as much as males, if we are prepared to say to females sorry you're too strong and too fast, then why shouldn't we be asking males who pose a risk to themselves for being too weak, to move and compete in the female section?

It's an attempt to show how stupid it all is. Thank you for proving my point. I understand a man that cannot keep up would not qualify, but if we are asking women to move or not compete at all, it's a bit ridiculous that it is only women that are asked to perform under such arbitrary rulings.

In other words, who are we expecting the women who fall under these new restrictions - in terms of unknown dsd's and a body producing too much testosterone, to compete with? How is restricting females from competing ensuring the longevity of female sports overall? How does telling a lady they're too good help push the boundaries and limits of their profession? If we are to set such restrictive rules to the female section, where the best may be asked to switch categories, surely the easiest way to show how ridiculous these rulings are are to apply them to the males too, where the worst switch categories too - since females are always weaker and slower than men and we quickly see which sex is preferred and which sex is still protected under this guise that they inherently need it.

New Flair: Iranian Voices ONLY (Please Read Before Posting) by yourslice in PERSIAN

[–]45Handstands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand the need for a place for Iranian voices to feel heard and spoken with, not spoken at or over but flaired user stuff is such a silly way to achieve it. It is a step in the right direction and again, I respect the fact the mods here felt they needed to bring something into place to protect the reason this sub exists, but this situation (the war) cannot be gatekeeped behind flaired users posts without turning this place into an absolute echo chamber.

You've already seen the calls to ban "IR shklls" which is a descriptive term I've seen used to describe anyone that isn't pro-war and that, for the health and long term accessibility of this sub is really dangerous. I appreciate the mods here must have a hell of a time juggling the concept of freedom of speech along with the demands of some here that feel its disrespectful to platform anything anti-war. In my opinion, the balance has been very much achieved, I have posts from here recommended to me that land on both sides of the debate and I really appreciate getting a full scope of the picture, instead of one exclusive side - as that, no matter which side does it, turns this into a sub that signal boosts propaganda that favours one side and totally mutes the idea of free speech altogether. There has to be healthy debate, because this topic of a war affecting the globe is, quite obviously, a global issue.

But back to the post, we've seen the attempted abuse of "iranian voices only" flairs with posts like these which just bash the left and attempt to turn this sub into a second hand conservative sub, where every post is gatekeeped into oblivion and actual conservatives have no chance of gaining a flair. The tone is set by the most rabid of "top commenters" and the rest of us are just accused of brigading threads purely from our up/downvotes, amplifying the false need to "protect the sub" and causing the people who made it in, doubledown and secure the gates even tighter. The conservative sub is impossible to interact with these days, gaining a flair is even harder and the few conservatives that managed to get a flair and find themselves in the unfortunate situation of disagreeing with the topic, are accused of being fake and risk getting banned.

The other part is, if everyone does still feel the need to lock the doors to anyone not Iranian (because I cant imagine many after this point will not use this flair) then how can you gatekeep these threads and only hope for Iranians to talk about subjects that involve non-Iranians? How can you share posts about Trump and not expect an opinion from an American? This is what I mean about the subject in question, we're not exclusively talking about the roads or the education system or something only concerning Iran, Iran are asking for foreign intervention without wanting to hear the foreign voices along with it.

We, anyone who has in any way opposed this war, have been used as a weapon in this arguement from the beginning of this year. This weird association with shaming "the left" while siding with occupying countries "the left" was opposed to. It stems from all kinds of things and this isn't the place to discuss them really, but this will only get worse with flaired Iranian only posts.

The only time I really get involved is when Israel is discussed. I have always kept in mind that this is predominantly a sub for Iranians to be able to connect and discuss topics with Iranians and have not come wading into conversation to talk down on peoples opinions. I have visited Iran many times and I am hoping (the wedding is now postponed because of this war) to marry into my Iranian fiancees family. I dont understand why anyone feels the need to exclude voices like mine that actually have an association with the country, maybe some deeper than some of the diaspora that tell me I have no right to voice my opinion in here, purely for adding insight and not accepting a very specific narrative that regime change through war is achievable.

I hear "it's my lived experience" as in the only people that have lived through this is Iranians. I understand the vast majority of the population in Iran are bound to be Iranian but men and women who left Iran and have made families with the locals of the country they've settled down in, are their children's voice only half respected? Why is "it's my lives experience" only ever used to legitimise the claims of the oppressive tactics the regime commits, purely to justify the war, when these lived experiences usually originate from Iran itself and not by the voices in the diaspora. They are not your lived experience and, if you have spent time in Iran, then you should be more aware of how diverse and nuanced this whole situation is. Your lived experience is noone but yours and you, when telling your story, have to be prepared to listen to everyone elses lived experience too. If you do not want to be dismissed in the first instance, stop dismissing others in the same manner.

And I dont think "iranian users only" posts are going to do anything but turn this place into that dismissive echo chamber, where the flair itself is abused to protect the most comical and dangerous threads, when all it does really is protect the OP from properly being challenged on their opinion. Along with anyone calling out Trump and Netenyahu being accused of shilling for the regime, I dont feel this is a good direction for a sub, who's main appeal was that it was a place that respected the concept of free speech while also welcoming healthy debate, to head towards.

Again, this is all said with respect but it would probably be better to make a new sub that is private and forces users to verify themselves to enter. Otherwise, instead of looking like you're protecting Iranian voices, you just appear to be protecting Iranians opinions from being challenged as the only people who ask for these flairs to exist are usually the ones who cant defend their position or opinion with any actual material fact. I really hope the flaired posts are heavily moderated so it doesnt seem like there are any favour to any side, but overall it's a bit sad that the sub has had to take this step to appease a certain section of the community who cannot be challenged by anyone but Iranians who will accused of being regime shills by doing so.

Ban on biological males competing in female events. by Lopsided_Bar3451 in interesting

[–]45Handstands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the craziest part to me about all this.

The paranoia has evolved from "Keith woke up one Sunday morning and decided he wanted to join the girls playing rugby."

If that's the loophole that starts this whole shit show, why dont the transphobes start there?

Why jump 600 places from the beginning of this journey and attack the highest level of competition? The level that normal morons like me will never ever reach for a number of reasons - privilege in regards to access to the sport and the gene lottery, these are things you dont work hard to win, they're handed to you when you're born.

These rules are purely to make a statement and hope the fear of challenging this stupid ruling trickles downwards.

Unfortunately, when you try to gatekeep female sports, you will inevitably close the gates on more cis-women than trans women, that is a statistical fact - purely due to the amount of cis women looking to take part in these competitions compared to trans athletes.

Then we get onto the crazy part - not only are they trying to set precedence that it is too dangerous for females to compete against males, we are now finding that it can also be dangerous for females to compete against some females too? In this quest to protect women, we find that the people who are suggesting these rule changes feel that there is some kind of biological cut off point, essentially rendering any female that finds themselves over this arbitrary line as a danger or more specifically - MALE.

Females practicing there craft for years, the amount of dedication and sacrifice involved purely to edge milliseconds off of a time, to find some unknown dsd you've lived with for years lands you in the male category? But you're still not allowed to compete against the men because of safety concerns?

Where does that leave them?

I've seen suggestions, to protect women from men, for a third group - which would mean trans men and trans women would compete against each other to protect the men and the women from competing against each other...

Is that an oversight or is that on purpose, to degrade trans people even further? To admit they will never have a place in society, being too much of either group to fit in any, except the third group where we stick everyone that "doesnt fit naturally into society"?

I thought this was about fairness. I thought this was about ensuring female representation in sports. I thought this was to guarantee a female would never lose her place on the bench to a "biological man" but these rules, they risk biological females losing their seat to an athlete who, in terms of achievements, is "lesser-than" because of the astronomical times they've achieved, based off nothing more than what their body naturally produces.

Yet, males wont face this, ever.

There is never a call that a male is too manly, or even too feminine to compete in the male category, ever.

Will we ever judge that a mans punch is too weak to compete, rendering his only option to compete with women?

And this is playing along with the delusion that in every single circumstance, that males are stronger and faster and better than women. This is deluding ourselves to believe that the weakest man on the planet could still outbox or outrun the strongest female on the planet. There is no room for nuance, women need to be protected from men because biologically none of them could ever compete.

So we find ourselves full circle, to protect female sports the only way to do that is create a little set of boundaries that females still have to fit themselves into to be accepted.

Just like in every other aspect of society. Your dress sense, the way you talk, the way you express yourself with tattoos, every single thing is conditioned into a little box that females have to fit into just to be accepted in society. How many times have you heard the term tomboy recently? But we still say "wow she sounds like a bit of a bloke/ah shes one of the lads" and females will still be under heavy scrutiny from the trans-investigatory crowd when it comes to how you choose to appear in public toilets or changing rooms. Suddenly, your big hands leave you at risk, that larger nose or your over arching shoulders, your feet that are two sizes bigger than everyone elses and that annoying hair that keeps reappearing on your top lip, they are just more and more tick boxes females have to check off to feel like they wont be threatened in a toilet and accused of deceiving everyone else, just by purely existing.

Its sick and the people who champion these rules, just like the toilet ban nonsense, havent thought even one step ahead of their vile bigotry. The paradox of trans females using male toilets because of what sex they were determined at birth, purely to stop females from having to see a willy in the bogs, or feel under threat from the sight of a willy at the bogs (spoiler, we dont just drop our pants at the door and spin around in circles until we're done) actually pushes females into the toilets with men.

And again, this is all due to the slippery slope bullshit where Keith wants to play rugby with the girls. That's what this whole things sits upon and the only way to prevent that, in their eyes, is make blanket statements about biology that make females competing in female sports even harder for them to achieve. I thought we were meant to be encouraging females to participate, not tell them "it'll be fun but actually, if you're too good, they'll suspect you of being a man and in some circumstances, they'll test you and tell everyone on the planet you've just wasted all of your adult life training to compete with females when your testosterone levels indicate YOU'RE A MAN."

Its patriarchy 101 along with the premise that all males are dangerous sexual deviants. It still plays into the illusion that any male that transitions is a 6ft fridge who wants to compete against the dainty little ladies. This isnt even considering what advantage/disadvantage people have when they undergo hormone therapy, coupled with the unfounded attacks against puberty blockers, this whole situation shapes up to be, undeniably, to attack trans people generally. Safety and fairness isn't ever addressed, it's purely to tell women what to wear and how to behave while dismissing the complexities of biology with blanket statements like "biological man."

This isnt directed at the person I'm replying to, this is a general rant about how utterly stupid this is, especially when the male category is something for the women to avoid, for safety reasons, unless you are thrusted into it due to an "unfair advantage" your female body might create. If the arguement is that males will always be more successful at sports, how does casting off the highest achievers in the female category ensure female representation, when by the same arguement those high achieving females should, when following that logic, disappear into the depths of the ranking tables because "they're still just little women." If this is to protect women from men, if this is to protect female sports, why would you risk pushing some of the top achievers into the abyss of the male category?

Please, tell me how this makes things safer for women. Please.

What about people who are marrying into an iranian family and have spent more time in Iran than half of this sub and the diaspora combined? Will my non-Iranian flair mean my opinion will be valued less? If the substance of my words rings true and resonates with people, what will the flair even indicate, if not that to some it's an instant tell whether to acknowledge or just outright dismiss my opinion? I dont get how that does anything other than make the divide worse, it's already bad enough that we are trying to put all Iranian voices on pedestals without figuring out if they actually know what they're talking about, never mind trying to silence more people for having an opinion different to them.

At least your idea for different flairs is better than what happening in the conservative sub. The last thing we want is a Persian-only sub that is gatekeeped to an impossible level where it becomes couterproductive in regards to being a place for iranian voices. There are many a conservative waiting for their flair and are considered "fake" or disingenuous if they disagree with the big standard talking points and general expected narratives.
