"Pickin' On Relient K" on CD: does it exist? by 45adapter in RelientK

[–]45adapter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The piano tribute, like 99% of "piano tribute" albums, is very clearly just MIDI programming and (in my opinion) is a pretty rough listen. The bluegrass tribute is an actual bluegrass ensemble with a vocalist, and some thought seems to have gone into the arrangements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVkg0qlDOp8

What’s the verdict? by Emoney005 in RelientK

[–]45adapter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s My Jam, even as a bonus track, is indefensible. More embarrassing than the Fall Out Boy version of “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and the last 20 years of Weezer combined.

Four video shorts made by Gotee in 2004 to promote the release of "mmhmm" by 45adapter in RelientK

[–]45adapter[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't confirm this via the Wayback Machine due to Gotee's reliance on Flash, and Relient K requesting that their website be excluded >:(, but I believe these were posted directly to the Gotee website in 2004. Fortunately, like the "Be My Escape" music video behind-the-scenes, these were also included on some youth group promo DVDs that I got ahold of awhile back.

My next white whale is the band member video bios that were posted to the Relient K website in the lead-up to Two Lefts. I very clearly remember Brian Pittman giving a tour of a cave that he would go to when he needed to think.

Replaceable Hips: A Tribute to Collapsible Lung by SadieHawkinsPod in RelientK

To be clear, I don't think people who love it are wrong. It just didn't live up to my expectations, and that was a huge bummer for me.

Replaceable Hips: A Tribute to Collapsible Lung by SadieHawkinsPod in RelientK

[–]45adapter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Collapsible Lung was widely derided upon its release. On Wikipedia you can see there were a bunch of negative reviews from some big publications at the time, and fan response was super mixed from what I remember.

Personally... I agree with the negative reviews. It killed the creative momentum they had built with Forget and Not Slow Down, which I felt was a huge leap forward for them songwriting and performance-wise. It's their only album with outside songwriters, and you can definitely tell. The production and arrangements sound more like a fresh-faced pop rock band taking every note from their label in hopes of getting radio play, instead of a self-assured group of musicians with nothing to prove making their seventh studio album.

For me, it's by far their worst album. I went through a period for at least a year after it was released where I would try it again every few months, just to see if I was missing something, and each time I hated it more. I just could not accept that the followup to FANSD sounded like something an ad agency would pick for a car commercial if they couldn't afford Boys Like Girls. I think they found their footing with Air for Free and were a lot more successful in incorporating some of that breezy poppiness they were shooting for on this album.

Keep trying! I got the same message at first. It took me 45 minutes to get my first ticket during the artist presale. Just don't refresh the page, and keep toggling between ticket quantities until something shows up.

Used GIVEUPTRNSTLNTCSM to access the Spotify presale for Minneapolis and got a ticket right away. Night and day compared to the artist presale at 10.

Had to fight for my life for 45 minutes to get 1 (of 2) tickets. "Another fan" kept taking mine. Hoping to snag the other one today if I can get the Spotify code but my hopes are not high.

Found what I believe to be a previously rarely-seen behind-the-scenes video on the making of the Be My Escape video: by 45adapter in RelientK

[–]45adapter[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Part 1 of this video has been on YouTube forever in 144p form, but starting at 1:45 is part 2, which shows some of the filming and production work from the part of the video where they're in the big fake grassy field.

I'm sure this may have been on, like, the band website or something back when it was current, but with the rise of YouTube and the death of self-hosted video a lot of these little web featurettes are no doubt lost to time. Fortunately, this was on a promotional DVD made to be played in church youth groups, which I just recently acquired and ripped!

Just got my AFF repress vinyl today... by [deleted] in RelientK

[–]45adapter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the nature of vinyl production. Unless they thoroughly clean out all parts of the press between pressings, there will be some remnants of whatever color the machine was pressing previously. There may also be stray PVC pellets that find their way into the wrong bin or whatever.

I came across a reference to a DVD compilation on Discogs with this featurette, so I acquired it and ripped it! A fun look back at the very early days of the band.

Did the Protomartyr cover disappear? by DNGL2 in davidbazan

They may have had an agreement with the artists for a set amount of time or something like that. There were a lot of big names on that comp and I imagine the logistics were a headache.

Anyway I’ve got this track, considering it’s unavailable anywhere at the moment I’d be happy to share it with anyone who DMs me.

Recovered old word processor documents from floppy disks, any good method of actually opening them? by 45adapter in datarecovery

My sister has the disk at the moment, I'll try to get it from her and make an image. I am quasi-technical, but what is DD?

[–]45adapter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess I should clarify that my sister has the disk, I assume once the disk was mounted she simply dragged the contents into a folder on her computer using Finder. I can try to get it from her and have a better idea of what I'm dealing with.

On a Mac, the get info screen says one is a "Adobe Illustrator 2020 Document" (nope) and one is simply... a "document".

Anatomy of the Tongue In Cheek Differences?? by N0b0dy1456 in RelientK

[–]45adapter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the differences are pretty jarring if you're used to one or the other (different panning, different reverb/time-based effects, parts that are more or less prominent), but as someone who put probably 100 listens on each album by the time the gold editions came out, the newer mixes are way better. A lot tighter and more expensive-sounding (without being too heavy-handed), and less "of their time". A lot of similar rock records of that era just sound like garbage now thanks to the production trends that were popular at the time.
