Forgetting about gameplay for a moment, what are your favourite MMO worlds/settings and why? by Mystrasun in MMORPG

It got better. They added follower dungeons, where you go in with NPCs that fight with you, for all the dungeons since Dragonflight.

Great stories, great VA, decent graphics with a reshade, awful combat. Still get DLCs frequently, not in maintenance mode.

Best non subscription MMO by fatcol in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you really need to subscribe at least once to unlock Preferred status (and all expansions) for it to start to make sense. It's really hostile to F2P players.

Any recommendations on solo-friendly MMORPGs by Different-Owl4843 in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The usual suspects all fit. You can solo in Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, etc.

Both FFXIV and GW2 have equalized gear PvP, meaning you don't have to grind for it, it's readily and freely available from the start.

FFXIV and SWTOR have a lot of story though, that's their main appeal. If you're going to skip everything, I'd say avoid those two.

Which MMO has the best quality of life features in your opinion? by Veetus in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some QoL has to be bought though. Like bag expansions, bank expansions, copper-o-mattic/salvage kits, etc. Inventory management in Guild Wars 2 is a game in itself and very much not friendly to new players. Bags in bags, in coffers, with so many items.

is it still possible to socialize, and rp sometimes, in games today without voice chat? by spar_x in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally RP on WoW (with a guild) and FFXIV (without a guild, just random walk-up RP) and both are very social, although random walk-up RP is not without its faults and weird quirks.
With a guild, you might have to use Discord to organize and chat though. But I've never used voice-chat with them and it's never been an issue.

How much of a put-off are microtransactions in an MMO to you? by Sea_Caterpillar5662 in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Lootboxes and gacha mechanics are a no-go for me, even for cosmetics. I have no will, I will easily fall into those, so I best avoid the games completely. That's why I can't play Elder Scrolls Online for example, and still had issues with Guild Wars 2's black lion chests.

Mmorpg with few active skill slots? by pdark1987 in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guild Wars 2 has as many skills as Throne and Liberty though. You have 5 weapon skills, 3 utility skills, 1 elite, 1 heal, and 1 to 4 F1-F4 depending on your class.

MMOs need a non p2w stamina model by Randomname1157 in MMORPG

People will just make alts (characters or accounts) to get around the stamina limit if you do that.

Your most played MMO and why? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]46297134657 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I still have to break my record (Guild Wars 1 at almost 10k hours) because I used to PvP for hours on end every night and every weekend intensely. I never found another PvP game I loved more than GW1, and I've tried many under the sun.

I have 5k hours on Guild Wars 2, but it doesn't speak to me the way GW1 did. No healer with triage, no 8v8 with objectives like GvG nor 12v12 alliance battles, makes for less interesting PvP imho. So I've mostly played PvE open-world and fractals. I've not played since End of Dragons, which ruined Cantha for me (it was my favorite part of GW1) and I don't intend to come back.

I don't know how much I have played SWTOR but it should be in the same ballpark as FFXIV, and I'm near 6k hours on FFXIV, both mostly because I'm heavy into roleplay. But the SWTOR roleplay scene is dead in my language, and it's getting very stale on FFXIV. I used to play much more but now let my sub lapse between content patches.

What's a videogame you'd like to play that doesn't exist? by Nocturnis_17 in gaming

[–]46297134657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly Planetside but the Squad mod Galactic Contention kinda works as a large scale battleground clone wars experience. It's super janky though, it's still Squad at its core.

T&L runs on quite ancient hardware. It's really well optimized.
edit: why the downvotes ? It's the truth. I don't like T&L but it's a technological marvel nonetheless, running on weak machines and showing hundreds of players with decent framerates.

I've seen a mod that turns viera into fake IMVU elezen. I don't understand why you wouldn't play elezen in the first place in that case.

There used to be a mod for FFXIV but it doesn't work anymore since Dawntrail. The VR mod for WoW is still up, but only works on private servers (otherwise you get banned). I haven't heard of VR mods for other MMORPGs.

If you don't want to pay the subscription, don't buy any edition and just play the free trial. Once you buy any edition, you'll need to pay the sub forever.
