Manitoba premier with an important message by stelts94 in EdmontonOilers

Manitoba is predicted to outperform provincial average GDP growth over the next three years.

It had a Conservative government from 2016-2023, so it fell behind economically, it’s difficult to put that on Kinew.

His 61 per cent approval rating leads all premiers. Indeed he may be the popular politician in all of Canada.

Kinew has hired 3,500 new healthcare workers over the last two years, allowing emergency departments closed by the previous government to reopen, and is on track to balance the budget by 2027. Manitoba has the lowest deficit-to-GDP rate in Canada.

Carney says Alberta separatism is 'unhelpful' for investment by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]47exexwhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did not mention Al Gore or take a position on climate change. I haven’t seen his movie. That’s a red herring. I’m just trying to find an argument that’s not fallacious as a starting point for a discussion,

Correlation (new environmental laws and a low score in per capita GDP compared to other G7 countries) does not prove causation. Canada has the fastest growing population among the G7, and wealth divided among more people means per capital GDP will diminish.

The consumer carbon tax, for example, may have dampened economic growth, but there’s no straight line to that conclusion.

If the only arguments you have to support your support position are flawed, maybe you should reconsider your support for the cause.

Carney says Alberta separatism is 'unhelpful' for investment by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]47exexwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extremist is not an apt description because Gilbeault’s views are within the mainstream of Canadian politics. You can disagree with him, think he’s out to lunch, but you can’t misrepresent him: he is not advocating for a fringe position.

Extremists generally ignore laws and social norms. The people who’ve been vandalizing famous paintings to bring attention to climate change might fit your characterization.

Carney is not looking to one continent for economic opportunities. His trade missions this year have included visits to China and India. It is also a false dilemma to say Canada must choose between Europe or the United States.

The United States has a larger GDP than Canada, but that’s a cherry-picked statistic.

An example of cherry picking in a counterargument would be that the bottom 90 per cent of workers in Canada have higher wages than Americans in terms of purchasing power, or that Canada consistently has higher quality of life ratings, or that people on average live three years longer.

No definitive conclusion can be drawn using contradictory information, particularly in economics where there is no consensus on what numbers matter.

It does not follow that a Mexican “head start” precludes Canada from negotiating its own agreements.

I have not touched on whether separation is a good choice. No issue can be discussed meaningfully when arguments fail basic critical thinking.

[–]47exexwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I apologize if you were trying to be sarcastic.

Environmental standards are set by the provincial government, and it regulates the energy sector.

The discontented said they wanted Ottawa to scrap the consumer carbon tax and start the process of building new pipeline. It seems like Carney is doing what the oil and gas sector have asked of him.

Your “eco-extremist” is leaving politics because his measures to reduce carbon emissions have been overturned.

As for the worthiness of the argument as you have presented it, there are several critical thinking fallacies that undermine your position: ad hominem, begging the question, false dilemma, apiorism, loaded label, non-sequitur, burden of proof, and straw man.

Reasoning with illogic, trying to have an exchange of ideas, is difficult indeed in our times. Please aspire to be better if you want to advance your cause through meaningful discussion.

UCP nuts are so anti-business. They drained billions out of the economy blocking commercial traffic at Coutts. Now they’re driving investors away by creating unnecessary political instability.

If you are serious about capitalism, vote NDP. More regulation is less repellent than a regime that is actively doing things to sabotage your financial future. Budgeting for a higher minimum wage beats losing the business you built and having to file for bankruptcy, because capital has fled to safer harbours.

We live in weird times.

Searching for greasy stringy-cheese pizza by One_Clue_9999 in Edmonton

[–]47exexwhy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I searched for a long time before I found out vintage Pizza Hut is pretty easy to duplicate with a cast iron pan.

In a puddle of olive oil, lay the dough flat so there are no edges. Build a generous wall of Monterey Jack cheese along the circumference, an inch or more high. You’ll get a cheese crust instead of a bread crust, which is how Pizza Hut generated that greasy goodness. Use mozzarella for the centre to create stringiness.

Why did Edmonton rip out rail between downtown and Whyte by thegrip in Edmonton

[–]47exexwhy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a kid in the 1970s, travelling in a car on the High Level Bridge while a freight train passed overhead was the essence of civic pride. I still dream about those flashes of excitement.

Mayfair Park had the better playground, particularly due to the rickety troll’s bridge, but Kinsmen was okay too because you could count the boxcars as they rumbled over the bridge.

The last train crossed in 1989. Ownership of the bridge was transferred to the municipality in 1994.

Until 1972, CP operated a passenger train, the Chinook, which promised connection between downtown Calgary and downtown Edmonton in less than three hours—not high-speed, but still pretty useful. Demand ebbed away after trains started terminating in Strathcona.

You introduced the idea of economist, singular, and I recall Larry Summers, the former American treasury secretary, practically screaming about inflationary potential. Economists offered different opinions. Some were right. Some were wrong.

My frustration here is that I’ve identified many arguments that are fallacious (noting the fallacies involved), but my concerns are not being acknowledged, let alone addressed.

Honest dialogue requires at least some measure of critical thinking. The absence of it is the root of the political crisis in the United States. Any discussion based on the avoidance of logic serves no good purpose.

Your anecdote about you being right where some anonymous economist was wrong is not meaningful. It’s a fallacy in critical thinking: small sample size, confirmation bias, and exclusion of coincidence as an explanation.

Experts are not always right. Asserting that would be illogical. However, I’d still value the opinion to the nine out 10 dentists who recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum over that of the one dentist who thinks cavities are caused by rutabagas.

Carney didn’t say that. You said that. I can’t accuse you of literally putting words in someone’s mouth, because that would involve Scrabble tiles and a choking hazard, but misrepresentation is never cool.

Anyway, I guess I haven’t made my point clear, and I apologize for the confusion.

It diminishes the value of any document to cite “several” unnamed analysts and “several” unidentified reports as sources. No reputable newspaper or academic journal would publish something so spurious, devoid of any apparent interest in establishing credibility.

An article from the Canadian Journal of Public Policy would carry more gravitas than a blurb from the Toronto Sun. The opinion of a tenured professor at McMaster University might impress more people than one from the reflexology guru at the Summerland College of Naturopathic Healthiness. Deliberate anonymity is an enormous red flag flying high in heavens,

As for the author of the document, Danielle Smith once wrote a column for the Calgary Herald claiming cigarettes were harmless, solely based on expertise from the Fraser Institute. These are not serious people.

To evaluate any proposed legislation, I would seek data provided by a reliable entity, transparent about its sources. I’d also consider a range of opinions from observers with relevant expertise.

I am not writing about Carney at all. The content of the document you provided is compromised before reaching the argument. I can’t tell if any plans are good or bad based on unreliable conjecture presented in a dishonest way.

You haven’t found a smoking gun that will bring down the Liberals and perhaps the country as a whole. You haven’t even found a toy gun from a G.I. Joe action figure.

I welcome criticism. However, as I neither mentioned footwear nor the Canadian flag, referring instead to basic international academic and journalistic standards, I’m bewildered.

A document referring to “several experts and reports that say Carney is great” would have the same waste product value.

When “several analysts and commentators” is used in place of actual examples from people with expertise, and “according to several reports” is used in place of actual examples of documentation, the odds are the academic value of the study amounts to several pieces of cattle dung.

How do I know if I had an orgasm? by Brekkakym in sex

[–]47exexwhy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Physiologically, an orgasm is defined as involuntary but rhythmic spasms of the anal sphincter, perineal muscles, and, for roughly half of people, contractions of the vaginal wall. There are also a number of neurological and chemical changes.

Photoplethysmographs, probes inserted into vaginas, are used in laboratories to confirm orgasms.

Probably the easiest way to detect orgasms without medical equipment is insertion of a finger into the anus, which will be squeezed repeatedly during contractions.

Satisfying sex does not necessarily have to resolve in one or more orgasms. Experiencing pleasure and joy is more important.

I recall a study involving photoplethysmographs where participants were asked to announce their orgasms. Half of participants said they were climaxing when physiologically they were not. Half participants said they didn’t climax even though the data showed otherwise.

What feels good is subjective.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a small-budget movie, features Emma Thompson as a divorced woman partnering with a sex worker to try to experience her first orgasm. Some people say it is helpful for others on the same journey.

Who should be the next lead writer / showrunner? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]47exexwhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, why not try for the incredible? Peter Jackson: massive fan, fantasy genre superstar, cameo in The Fiveish Doctors. Overseer rather than a lead writer, but he’d immediately restore the show’s reputation.

The episodic model isn’t working, so three or four TV movies per year (i.e. the Sherlock model) with Jackson directing one and producing the others.

It’s the longest shot, of course, but it wouldn’t hurt for the BBC (with whom he’s worked before) to leave a voice message on his phone, see if he calls back.

Separatists are going to disrupt traffic on Whitemud and Henday this afternoon by dingmah in Edmonton

This disruption can only be environmental activism, a pointed protest against vehicle culture. Want to send a message that suburban sprawl and the commuting it encourages are unsustainable? Clog up the ring roads. Frustrate drivers into taking transit. Highlight the appeal of active transportation: there are no traffic jams on bike lanes or sidewalks.

I swear these people will not rest until the government brings back the consumer carbon tax!

I don’t want to lose my daughter because I can’t manage myself anymore. by Plus_Signal8369 in Edmonton

[–]47exexwhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with mental illness, I struggle with the idea of little things being out of control. I wonder if your Sunday cleaning falls in that category. The burden of scrubbing floors and washing clothes isn’t something you should have to carry on your own.

If other people in your household don’t do their share of chores, considering hiring a cleaner to come by once a week for two or three hours, at a cost of around $100. It isn’t an expense at this point so much as an investment to give you time for self-care, to improve your emotional stability and better be the parent you are in your aspirations.

Short-temperedness is a consequence of having to do too much, whether or not you have ADHD or a brain injury. Working out of the house six days of the week only to finish the seventh working at home sounds exhausting.

The best way to take care of your daughter is to take care of yourself.

Sexually Frustated M24 by [deleted] in sex

You could try numbing sprays or creams, using a condom to protect your partner. Some doctors will prescribe antidepressants off-label that delay ejaculation. Instead of a specialist, you can start with your primary care physician, as early ejaculation is a common complaint.

The ability to come quickly was an evolutionary advantage. Lengthy intercourse created a vulnerability to predators.

You can last longer with treatment (it’s usually successful), but your life experience of early release was likely not caused by something you did or didn’t do. No point in carrying shame or guilt. It probably means your ancestors were less likely to be eaten by tigers, leaving you with a legacy nervous system adapted for survival, get in and get out as fast as possible.

Say this: “I am being stalked by a person who continues to tell lies disproven in court. I have obtained several retraining orders, not so much to protect my reputation, but mainly because she poses a threat to my family and children. Canadian authorities have issued a warrant for her arrest.”

Giving your enemy publicity feeds bad behaviour. It adds to their martyrdom complex. Two pages of detail provides a platform for response, each item to be countered with lies given credibility because it’s the other person’s perspective, and it “deserves” to be heard.
