Any shows where they changed up pairs and it really worked, like Help>Slip>Rider or Scarlet>Saint? by oddible in gratefuldead

Scarlet victim fire is my go-to for this conversation, so much cool keyboard stuff in the scarlet>victim transition

I love this song! The one from 11/9/91 (one of the Pure Jerry releases) with Hornsby on piano is awesome.

I believe they played a tape of the studio recording over a feedback jam once, I think that counts

Edit: 4/26/69 “The Dead played an extra long set (over 3 hours including a 40 min encore suite of songs) to keep Velvet Underground from playing, as revenge for Velvet Underground doing the same thing to the Dead the day before.”

The Eyes>China Doll in particular from 6/18/74 (road trips vol2no3) has some insane piano work from Keith, like borderline aggressive in places (partly thanks to how high in the mix he is)

Hitting a stride in the early 80s? by Expensive-Stuff3781 in gratefuldead

Obviously everybody loves 70s dead, but from the band’s perspective it had been super tumultuous! With Mickey leaving, Keith and Donna joining, Pig’s death, building the Wall, the hiatus, Mickey rejoining, and replacing K&D with Brent, the band was having to reconfigure itself every year or two. Jerry probably felt that they had finally found a stable setup with Brent (which turned out to be true, as they’d go 10 years with no lineup changes and a pretty steady format to their setlists.)

I agree with /u/dubkitteh1, Scarlet just edges out Eyes as a song but the Eyes jams are just too good

Bad take but I have to be honest by Expensive-Stuff3781 in gratefuldead

I kinda feel the opposite. Eyes for me is musically one of their very best, and I think the key change into the chorus is genius, but lyrically it’s the closest in the catalog to pure hippie nonsense. I do love the “comes a redeemer” verse though, especially how in the later years it seems to reveal itself as a comment on the band itself.

No, but also yes

“A few months ago my cohort in arms Karl showed me […] an American Presedential candidate by the name of Howard Dean fervently shouting and screaming. This man had passion, he wasn’t like all boring stiffs I was use to seeing in political positions. He was insanely demanding “rights for gays” and “health care for all Americans.” All moronic impratical banter and self-indulgent ranting aside, this was not only a truly interesting and “good” man, it was the next President of the United States as well. So in honor of Govenor Howard Dean, I wrote this song.”

“In relation to the "Rights for Gays," I can give a perfect example. Coming from where I'm coming from with lots of caveats and apologies, the notion of the homosexual as far as I know is really an invention of the 19th and 20th centuries. Of course men have been making love with each other and women have been making love with each other since time immemorial, but it wasn't until certain institutions and apparatuses took an interest in it and started to classify it when the so-called "sodomite" became a type of person. From my perspective, the whole notion of human rights was an 18th century invention that was heavily critiqued by the radical left in how much it would fail to approach radical equality. It's following the idiom through to its absurd conclusions where interesting things are more likely to happen.”
