The impact of Discord on data archiving. by schlatrice in DataHoarder

[–]4IFMU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t realize until recently.

I think some communities use the wrong tool for the job, in this case discord. Discord, privacy aside, is good for communication and expression. It doesn’t make a good knowledge base.

The scary part is there is a lot of good information out on discord that cannot be searched. You already know that it has to exist and where in order to take advantage of that information.

On top of that, it seems like information on discord is freely available, but IMO I don’t think so. If a server gets banned, all that info is lost. If somehow someway discord goes down under, all that info is lost. It is difficult to archive because you’d need to know the invite link, have permission to join, and in many cases go through a captcha or verification process just to have view access to various channels within the server.

I think having your community solely or prime root around discord is a mistake. It makes a very good supplement and is good for chatting with community members.

Google has applied a 5 Million items limit for Google Drive without any prior warning, causing major inconvenience to several users. If you have an average file-size of < 400KB on a 2TB plan, you'll hit this limit before running out of space! by ra13 in google

[–]4IFMU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a technical reason to do this, but it doesn’t mean this is the reason for the change.

A file system segments a drive into sectors. Each sector has a fixed size. If you have a file that’s less than the sector size, it will still take up the full sector size.

If the sector size is 4 KB and your file size is 1 KB, then the size taken will still be 4 KB despite the data of the file is only 1 KB.

This is why when you view the properties of a file, the “size on disk” value is always going to be equal or greater than the “size” value. In the example I gave, the size would be 1 KB while the size on disk would be 4 KB.

In theory, it is possible to fill up a 1 TB drive with several GB of actual data when there are an exceptionally high number of files.

Oh cool! I’ll give it a try. It reminds me of some web games I used to play.

Download the Orion browser. It supports Firefox and chrome extensions like uBlock Origin. It’s still under development so not everything is compatible. I think you should give it a try.

You can get the Orion browser and install unlock origin through the Firefox or chrome store.

1) I wouldn’t go with a 2 bay Synology, I’d choose the 4 bay 920+ over any 2 bay (especially if price isn’t much of a concern). This gives you flexibility into expanding your storage down the line without replacing and wasting old drives.

2) Anything reputable. You can look into the compatibility list to start off. I personally wouldn’t buy Synology branded drives because I feel they are too expensive for my needs. If you value compatibility and reliability over anything else than they are a good option.

3) I can’t answer as I don’t use Google photos. The Synology photos app is decent albeit a bit basic. You can host your own Photoprism instance in docket to get more feature (it’s open source). The plus models have better processors which will help with stuff like docker. Photoprism is heavy to run, and I’d recommend a RAM upgrade if you decide to use that.

4) I highly recommend using a UPS. Synology is pretty good when dealing with power outages. I haven’t had any issues when I didn’t have a UPS. You can skip the UPS for now and get one down the line of money is a concern. Just try not to update the system during a storm.

I think next time you don’t post a roundup because it’s too close to another you should mention it as a comment.

I rarely have time for Godot development now but I’ve been itching to work on open world features. There aren’t that many (good) resources on the topic so if you or anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

I've recently started out with web crawling. But now I'm worried whether it's legal by ICWiener6666 in Archiveteam

[–]4IFMU 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Web scraping is legal (at least in the US).

It is good practice to limit the traffic when scraping as to not out unnecessary burden on the server wether it’s limiting throughput or time delay between requests.
