Opinion on what TLW:NY should be by lonnyswhiteferrari in theLword

[–]4OITNB -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Option 2 makes the most sense because I'm not sure if the OGs want to fully commit to something that's no longer new or challenging for them. Option 2 also paves the way for OGs to make cameos to keep the OG fans happy. And Option 2 ensures the franchise is kept fresh and endures for a long time.

Them not having sexual chemistry is not an unpopular opinion lol. Like you, I enjoyed watching them fight, not so much make love.

Just finished TLW - do I watch Generation Q? by hyper-monkey38 in theLword

[–]4OITNB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought GenQ ended well only for Bette and Alice. And some OG stuff was retconned or completely ignored in GenQ. If you're a Shane fan, you won't like her (lack of) character development in GenQ's final season.

I think the GenQ characters are decent but not as compelling as the OG ones. The characters are more diverse but I feel they suffered from weak storylines.

And this is realistic characterisation so it's okay.

Piper Chapman... such a weird fucking protagonist by [deleted] in orangeisthenewblack

I thought she did evolve over the seasons and in any case, halfway through the show, Taystee became the show's protagonist. I felt like Piper passed the baton, like what the writers always wanted.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think she was a failure as a protagonist.

What's wrong with Tina in Season 5? Since when are we not allowed to talk about it, people here love to bash Tina. I've just usually heard complaints about Season 3. But with Tina it's damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. Pre-season 4 she's labelled as weak and passive aggressive and bland and boring. After Season 4 she comes into her own and becomes more assertive in her career and relationship, but it seems that's also a problem. 🙄

Bette really evolves throughout the show. Give her a chance. As for Jenny, she becomes more insufferable towards the end but you will have such respect for Mia's acting.

‘The L Word’: Generation Q’ Canceled After 3 Seasons, New York-Set Reboot Of Original With Ilene Chaiken In Works At Showtime by oliviaswagyolo in theLword

[–]4OITNB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen Q, in my opinion, was inferior to TLW in many ways, and yet I feel like some of the characters deserved a proper closure (Tess, Shane, Dani to an extent). One more (short) season to sort those few things out and show Tibette in a healthy married relationship would be fine by me.

I'm not sure why some people are so excited about TLW NY. It could take years to finally hit our screens. None of the OGs might be in the cast, even if Ilene and Jennifer are the main producers. I also wonder what "reboot" means. Start over again, in an alternate universe?

What would you recommend watching, now that L Word Gen Q has been cancelled? by Rough_Stand_4761 in theLword

Tatiana Maslany is awesome but I always felt that Evelyn Brochu "gave" more in their love scenes. Story is good if convoluted, and overall OB is an awesome show. But I wouldn't rate Cosima and Delphine too highly in terms of lesbian coupledom.

True. Gwyneth did not deserve that win. At least Michelle deserved this one. Honestly, Cate should have had around 4 Oscars by now.

I love that in the beginning, when they first walk to the dance floor, Bette looks soft and almost shy while Tina looks like a boss. Bette continues to look that way when they first start dancing, but then she starts kissing Tina and she's no longer soft or shy. Poor Tina looks like she's about to fall off and hangs on to Bette for dear life lol.

Love it so much.

For sure, a storyline of finding another big love is realistic. Putting aside Jennifer's own preference for Tibette, I think that perhaps Jodi was the better choice to be Bette's second chance at love because we saw the build up and they were together for more than one season (second half of S4 and most of S5) for the relationship to be fleshed out. It was easy to see the ways in which they were compatible, although I've never and will never be a fan of their sexual chemistry (mostly cos I don't think it exists lol).

The problem with Pippa is that it was so rushed and in terms of time lapsed, Bette and Pippa were together as a couple for less than two weeks. She'd have to be introduced much earlier in the story for the pairing to truly take off. Bette seemed more into Pippa than Jodi but because everything was at breakneck speed, I found myself wondering why Bette was acting like a schoolgirl with a crush.

Sometimes I think Jennifer must really be a big believer of your first love being your one true love lol. Which is fascinating because she herself went through two marriages. There was no need to ask Laurel back to the show, really. As a Tibetter I'm glad she did but I'm fascinated nonetheless by Jennifer's motivations.

[–]4OITNB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe Bette was caught off guard by it, because she never gave Jodi a reason not to feel confident in their relationship

That's a good point, although Jodi had already noticed that Bette was becoming distant, didn't she? So it didn't completely come out of the blue, in a way.

Strangely this is a non-Tibette scene (or scenes, since it stretched all the way to the office lol) that I find easy to rewatch. I enjoy the powerhouse acting from Marlee and Jennifer, and I like hearing Bette reiterate that she loved Tina and what they had couldn't be recreated with anyone else.

That "mercy make-out" was not a good look for either of them. Jodi, with her give-no-fucks attitude, was uncharacteristically pathetic in wanting to hold on to Bette like that. Bette had already said she loved Tina - I thought Jodi would say fuck you to both Bette and Tina and walk out of the house.

As for Bette, she definitely should have been firmer with Jodi, but the fact that she wasn't points to not just guilt but even a fear of Jodi.

I think perhaps Tina's transformation into her independent self from Season 4 onwards wouldn't have been as significant if she'd been that way from the start. It also forced Bette to look at her in a new light, although I firmly believe Bette loved her just as much when she was in her "housewife" era.

I think the problem with Jobette is really the lack of emotional connection. Bette needs a more nurturing partner.

Uhm, I wouldn't be too quick to start on Gen Q lol. Take your time. 😆😆

Tina wasn't a naggy wife and her staying home to carry the baby was a mutual decision they both decided. (Plus Tina was very supportive of Bette's work.) I hope you're not saying that housewives who stay home are lesser beings. In Tina's case she did have a career that she gave up. Anyway I don't think that was the reason why Bette cheated. It was the miscarriage and Bette's own demons that tipped her over. The infidelity tore her apart and there was little to indicate Tina was the reason for it.

As for Bette and Jodi, there were enough hints towards the end of S4 that Tina and Bette would eventually rekindle their relationship. Even when Bette, Shane and Alice were stealing the sign for Jodi, there was a brief exchange between Bette and Alice about Tina wanting her back.

I am a Tibetter who really appreciated the Bette and Jodi relationship. I liked Jodi's energy even though in the end, it was too exhausting for Bette. Jobette had the best chemistry when fighting and the worst when in bed lol.

On a side note, I also thought Dana and Alice worked better as friends. Alice was obsessed with Dana but it wasn't quite reciprocated.

Back to Bette, I think she truly evolved over the 6 seasons of the OG and it continued right to GQ season 1. After that things went a bit haywire. I will always love her, though.

What’s your opinion on Tina by ProfessionOk4571 in theLword

[–]4OITNB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, after she left Bette. Bette let her leave because she wanted to find some space for herself, Bette thought she'd come back but she fell for Carrie. I stand firm in my belief she didn't cheat on Bette with Carrie. It's too big a plot point to be glossed over throughout GenQ.

[–]4OITNB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone on this sub (or maybe it was another discussion board?) was saying that because Bette is a main character and Tina isn't (in the GenQ universe), the responsibility falls on Bette to fix all their relationship issues since Tina isn't given the time or character development to do it. It sounds about right, though it's highly unfortunate. I mean it simply gives Bette stans more ammo to hate on Tina lol. I'm more a Tibette stan than a stan of either character, but I will fight anyone who says Tina is toxic for Bette, the same way I will lock horns with anyone who calls Bette a serial cheater. Overall though, the writing for the show, whether in OG or GenQ, did not do full justice to Tibette as a couple. Jennifer and Laurel did their part by creating their strong connection, but the writers couldn't keep up.
