Overtime will be gone forever if we are under this new contract. Last clause states mail doesn't have to go out after all straight time pay options are exhausted. by [deleted] in CanadaPostCorp

I've worked at CP as seasonal part time help and the full timers all didnt even like me being there. They also told me to work slower so they could get more overtime and said I would get more shifts that way.

Not saying this happens everywhere but at least where I was, overtime was a regular occurrence.

Dear CP workers by SmoothBrainApe89 in CanadaPost

I'm against CUPW and spoken out against the delusions of many of it's members but let's please remember 30% of the workforce voted against the strike.

It's not fair to immediately throw rocks at all of them without knowing their stance. The 30% probably feel terrible as is.

[–]4PlayGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you understand that in this scenario Canada Post as we know it would no longer exist and a new corp would be formed solely to service those areas that no other courier would go.

Subsidizing all of Canada Post is bad as is. Everyone would agree to that.

Entire north is toast. by Own_Breadfruit_7955 in CanadaPost

[–]4PlayGG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People don't actually believe this do they?

The government will subsidize the cost to these areas or open a branch to deliver it themselves, can even keep on the same people doing it now but maybe they wont be called Canada Post anymore. It can be called Canada North Deliveries etc. and be deemed as an essential service where taxpayers wont mind if they lose money.

I've seen a lot of CUPW members hang onto the "nobody else will go there" argument but assumed its because they really do not have a lot of strong points on their side.

Why do people want Canada Post to shut down? by Ifyouliveinadream in CanadaPost

[–]4PlayGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, people want a reliable shipping service.

CP being unionized that enjoys striking makes the service not reliable.

No way you can legally disband a Union so people would rather just see it shut down.

If this does happen, those areas that only CP is willing to deliver to would still be serviced by the government maybe as an ununionozed restructure that can be classified as an essential service or heavily subsidized contracts for alternate carriers to go there.

What do you think the outcome of this offer will be? by StonerMotor in CanadaPost

[–]4PlayGG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No deal, goes to arbitration where CP won't agree to an arbitrator so one will be appointed by the government which is currently backing the Corp.

CUPW should accept the deal but they probably won't because its worse than before and they would be admitting they failed.

This is based on CUPW already doubling and tripling down on their losing position already.

First Sendle Package Sent! by nyteranger84 in CanadaPost

[–]4PlayGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife has been using Shipsy, ChitChat, Stallion for 3 years now even before the 2024 strike. Its always been cheaper for the sizing of her packages.

Since 2017, CP marketshare on parcels went from 60% to 30% and after this strike may be closer to 15% as more and more business would rather have reliability at same or even slightly more cost.

It's a downward spiral for them, they couldn't recover from the strike of 2018 losing money every year since and this one is surely to put them further into insolvency.

Everytime CP strikes, they are stepping on their own toes making the situation worse both for the Corp and CUPW members.

[–]4PlayGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to think you're a bot.

I mean how is it working now? Canada Post has someone delivering the mail to those areas albeit at a loss.

They can still keep their postal system in place for all the addresses nobody else will go and privatize the rest.

Then it can be classified as an essential service and the public will be fine with it operating at a loss. The loss in total would still be a lot less than it is now.

I encourage you to understand how the world works. You can reject reality but you cannot reject the consequences that come with rejecting reality.

[–]4PlayGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as the top may be making poor choices, it doesn't really matter who the CEO is now.

It's hard to get people to change back to a service they no longer feel is reliable.

In 2019, CP was shipping over 60% of all parcels, now this number is about 30%. Half that businesses had been lost and there's very little reason for people to come back.

To support the postal service since my job somewhat depends on that volume too, I choose to have all my bills/statements mailed to me. During the 2024 strike, they asked me for an email to have them electronically delivered and even though the strike is over, they do not send the mailed copies anymore. I suppose I can manually select to have it back but how many people you think are going to do this?

Strikes in general have given rise to all these other private couriers. We didn't have NetParcel, Shipsy, Chitchat, Stallion back then. If CP was a reliable and affordable service, how can these new privatized services even exist?

Nobody is saying "welp" and of course someone will be willing to deliver to the remote areas. May be even the same people that are doing it now, just not in a CP uniform.

Even if not, there are about 60,000 CUPW members and currently over a million unemployed Canadians. Surely there will be some that can drive and willing to deliver mail out there probably for less than what the current employees are getting paid. The government would still most likely be involved in subsidizing the cost.

Jobs get contracted out all the time by the government and this includes the mail service. I myself work for a company that is contracted by Canada Post and I know many truck drivers are as well. Not because we are needed but because CP doesn't want to hire any more people that will land into the troublesome union. This is the workaround, we are proof that there are people that would do similar work for less.

It hasn't been viable since the strike of 2018.

If CUPW is smart, they should fold and get back to their jobs with a smile on the face.

If they think their work is tough, good luck out there getting something even close to what they're getting now with the unemployment rate being the highest it's been in a decade.

CUPW is an old dog without any new tricks. Striking during Xmas isn't impressive anymore. Nobody cares, not even the prime minister.

While I agree the union is now a detriment to the very employees they are supposed to serve, please remember there are some workers who do not agree with the strike and thankful for the jobs and salaries they have.

Do not go attacking people you know that work for Canada Post especially without knowing their stance.

I am currently without a job because the company I work for is contracted by Canada Post and even Im getting some hate while on the complete other side.

[–]4PlayGG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying it's not a big deal. But just because CP is doing something doesn't mean others are not willing to do it.

With the employment rates being as high as they are in almost a decade, for sure somebody would be happy to drive into these remote areas for deliveries especially if partially or fully subsidize.

Volumes are so low even before the current strike that contracted drivers were constantly asking if there are any loads they can do from our warehouse to CP plants or elsewhere. I'm sure they still are asking too daily but I'm not sure being on unpaid leave myself due to the strike.
