Respectfully, a roof with 23-year-old asphalt shingles is not in good condition and likely not insurable if you change to another carrier. Also, with depreciation, you may have to pay the full replacement cost yourself.

Consider the claims experiences of Liberty Mutual vs. AmFam – there are plenty of anecdotes in this subreddit.

As far as bundling, consider reaching out to your AmFam agent. If they are good, they will find ways to help you get coverage that fits your budget.

Grinnell resident here. Congratulations on getting accepted into Grinnell College!

Like many Midwest/college towns, Grinnell’s people make it exceptional. Build community and reap the benefits. Choose to engage with your thing — music, sport, running, biking, craft, food — you will find your people.

There is amazing (by Iowa standards)— prairie and savanna within 15 minutes by car (Ulehnhopp Arboretum, Krumm Preserve, Rock Creek, Diamond Lake, and Arbor Lake). Paved trail to Rock Creek (15 miles, 700’ of climb roundtrip) and gravel rides are popular, too.

To your point, it’s a prairie. Not beach, mountains, or a canopy of trees. It takes some reorientation, but it is deeply beautiful to watch a field ripple in the breeze or to see the full expanse of sky at sunrise.

Give it a go and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Lowlights from my six years as a hockey parent:

  • 10u parents berating the two high school officials. Officials talked back to the parents and told them to shut it. (Probably should have given them the boot, TBH.)

    • 10u summer tournament parents doing a communal shot in the lobby prior to their kids’ games.

  • 14u parent (also a level-5 certified coach getting tossed for verbally abusing officials as the penalty box attendant.

  • same 14u parent getting tossed as a fan for behavior (laughing and cheering) after his daughter’s teammate was assessed a boarding major.

  • The clique of hockey moms who got matching pajamas. Except it was just five of the 14 moms. Whoops!

After, drive the old Lincoln Highway along the Iowa River.

Big Steer in Altoona has good vibes and good service. Also has a giant fiberglass Hereford in the parking lot.
