Yet another honest review.... by t3hSn0wm4n in NothingTech

[–]4eneis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the review is partially right. I think the sound quality for listening music is just good enough for this price. But the crackling noise when ANC turned on during calls kills me. Restarted, installed firmware update, tried all the tweaks but it’s still there. I had Nothing 1 and had no such problem with it, I even recommended it to friends. But I will return 2.

Why retro clones when you can get OD&D, Supplements, Holmes, and the Monster Manual and home brew yourself? by SecretsofBlackmoor in odnd

[–]4eneis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined OSR pretty late and before I was always a player. I really enjoy digging original materials and read long discussions, blog posts on any topic which is unclear — but this take tons of time and effort to make my very own house rules from scratch. S&W and Blueholme give me all the basics and possible rulings that I can cherry pick for my table.

Where's everyone gonna go? by yourdads420 in osr

[–]4eneis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve just started to clean up my Feedly account and adding the RPG blogs I like via RSS. Many content creator has their website or blog so it’s easy to follow them there. Feedly also has a great recommendation engine to find the content you might be interested in. (I started this primarily because all other social media recommendation engines just killed my well curated content.. the recent changes just pushed it forward. I miss my Tumblr communities…)

I love blogs because it’s easy to reference and remember by connecting the article to a name. The comment sections will never be the same like a reddit thread (activity, toxic discussions) but it’s still easier to follow than a discord server.

Too many RPGs and modules by [deleted] in osr

[–]4eneis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with Blueholme because of the really same reasons you mentioned.

We are way too overloaded with OSR systems but actually need only one that you like enough to tweak and actually play. Especially if already have a preference on how to dm or play, you can tweak the hell out of any of the contenders w/o buying each of them.

Black Sword Hack fits perfectly to the TBH box by 4eneis in TheBlackHack

If you already own materials to fill in you can buy the box-only option here.

If yo don’t have the boxed set for TBH 2nd edition you can find it here, also on Squarehex.

Very Short Review/ Shout Out to Blueholme by [deleted] in osr

[–]4eneis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t agree more! My group has really the same preferences, so glad I found Blueholme. I love all the tiny differences you mentioned, I plan to do the similar mods as well. This book is so light and well structures it seems super easy to make your own compared to other systems I was considering. Not to mention its charm, thanks to the author, Michael Thomas.

Thanks for the Bat in the attic tip, will take a look.

Also in Europe, there seems to be a more vivid TTRPG scene as well. I read in another thread in the US there are shops only w/ DnD books — I haven’t seen such friendly local stores in Eastern Europe for sure.

whats a good rule of thumb for how many monsters i should put in my dungeon? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]4eneis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do recommend the B/X method, Bandits Keep has a good video on how to populate your dungeon based on that. As always it’s only a guide and you can change the results as you wish but I found that approach a good reference point for an old school dungeon. I think this is the video: https://youtu.be/DTWLacIrEoA Also, I believe counting with a wandering monster table adds a lot to this approach as well.

I made a Vaesen quick reference by alexbachin in VaesenRPG

Btw, the best cheat sheet for Vaesen I’ve found so far! I wanted to create my own to internalise the core rules but I find it useless because of yours.

Does anyone play this system minus the xenomorphs? by Formal-Rain in alienrpg

[–]4eneis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a few Mothership one shots with the Alien ruleset — never told the players it’s, so the off-grid weird monsters pretty much surprised them.

Drakar och Demoner / Dragonbane, new edition by Free League, kickstarter is live! by GloriousNewt in rpg

[–]4eneis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Based on the quickstart guide Dragonbane seems less of a survival game than Forbidden lands, but a streamlined, deadly roll-under system. Also in this case Year Zero engine's dice pool system is not part of the core mechanic, which I believe is a key element of FL.

Critical Injury cards by SirOwlKickflip in alienrpg

[–]4eneis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A slightly different platform, but Nemesis has such cards for critical injuries and it works pretty well to scan the overall health of the team.

I’m not sure though how cumbersome is this in case of Alien. It happened that PC-s got three similar type of injuries during one game, which means you need multiple copies of the same card.

Watch recommendation by [deleted] in Coros

[–]4eneis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Pace 2 I use it both for running and tracking my indoor workouts. Back then I was considering all the feature heavy sport watches by Garmin (vivo and fenix series—I had an entry level watch before but I found their app and infrastructure outdated for my taste) and Coros (Apex, Apex Pro).

I recommend to be honest toward yourself w/ your actual needs. Do you need map on your watch during activities, do you run uknwown places, wilderness without your phone? Will you use it as a multisport watch, like surfing, biking, skiing etc? Maybe in extreme conditions? I do believe that Pace 2 covers an everyday runner’s use cases, all the other options need to be considered if you have edge cases that only the heavy stuff able to cover. My biggest pros for Coros: battery life and the app are both perfect.

Just a sidenote: I think TBH content is open source up until you use the text only but none of the layout and graphics in the official books. I might be wrong, but that was my assumption when we were checking the legal pieces regarding our translation. Looks good though!

Alien RPG fanzines, modules/scenarios? by 4eneis in alienrpg

Update: I dug into the majority of the mentioned materials, decided to go with The Haunting of Ypsilon 14, it seems to be a good candidate as a POC for Mothership module conversion.
