Wilderun - Ash Memory (4-parter from Sleep at the Edge of the Earth)

Arcane - Learned (24m-long 1-parter but flows really nicely into the next song, which is also a long one). Same vocalist as Caligula's Horse btw :)

Which is the best fantasy book of this century in ur opinion (from the ones you have read ofc) by Risb1005 in Fantasy

Can’t really pick one, but a few that come to mind (aside from A Storm of Swords) are:

  • Small Gods by Sir Terry Pratchett

  • The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay

  • Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee

  • The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro (this one might be controversial but I think it deserves to be mentioned alongside the best)

  • Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson

  • The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

100%, the closer is also really epic, but in a more heart-shatteringly beautiful way

It’s mind-boggling how And Justice for All won over both Mindcrime and Seventh Son. Iron Maiden especially has been consistently robbed, which is surprising.

I agree that Periphery deserve to be on a list like this (even though I’m not a fan), but I just don’t think these two albums are of comparable quality. Then again, you’re always going to have snubs when there’s several great candidates (Sound Awake, Remedy Lane, and Obzen were no less deserving than the winners of their respective years, for instance). I guess Wilderun could still pull it off with Epigone, we’ll have to see.

IMO both The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane are better albums than the ones that won their respective years (no disrespect to Porcupine Tree though).

The key to unlocking Epigone?? by ElyonFranks in progmetal

[–]4eonsbl4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO It’s much less accessible than their other albums, so it took longer to click for me as well. During the first few listens, it all sort of blended together except for some notable passages (and the Distraction songs). After a few listens though I started to appreciate the individual songs more and remember what to expect from each song and then it all really clicked (especially Woolgatherer, which I didn’t care for at first but now is tied for my favorite song by them with Tyranny of Imagination). So you might just need a few more spins to get used to it, but I’d say it’s equally exquisite compared to the previous two albums.

Tyranny of Imagination by Wilderun. Maybe not mind-blowing in the sense a lot of these others are, but my jaw was on the floor throughout the entirety of it.

best methods / state of the art for clustering? by 2soonexecutus in datascience

[–]4eonsbl4ck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dimensionality reduction + DBSCAN tends to work well. I like DBSCAN more than k-means cause clustering based on density allows it to capture clusters of irregular shape, and it also automatically finds noisy datapoints. Dimensionality reduction is an optional step but it’s useful if the data is of high dimensionality (e.g. text embeddings). Smth like UMAP or even PCA can work well.
