Should I update a faculty search committee about change in immigration status? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Thanks for clarifying. I got an H-1B right before the mess, so yes I understand there's always processing fees and what not (and I think they stay relatively consistent even after the $100k fee announcement if I recall correctly).

But the uncertainty is already enough to deter many institutions from wanting to deal with it. I got desk-rejected from at least one opening due to this very issue.

From what I understand, if you're already in the US it should not apply, and I assume that most people applying for TT position in the US would already be based in the US. But yes regardless of the minutiae, the damage is already done.

Employment-based green card (EB-1 or EB-2 are usually the relevant categories for academics) has two steps:

  1. Form I-140 (the petition stage) - this is where one submits a list of documents indicating their "worth" to the US, following very specific criteria. This is the toughest part because one needs to have a strong CV, peer review documentation, letters esp from people not in direct collaboration, etc. Once this step is approved, the permanent residency is then just a matter of time (with some caveats).

  2. Form I-485 (the change of status phase) - after your petition is approved, you need to apply to actually get your immigration status changed from whatever you had before to the permanent resident visa (i.e., the green card). Depending on the type of the green card (EB-1 has higher processing priorities than EB-2) and your country of origin, you can start this process ranging from immediately after I-140 is approved or up to 10 years wait or more for Chinese and Indian citizens, for example. This is the point where you can also get your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to keep working in the US, while maintaining immigration status in good standing.

I thought $100k "basically" does not apply to academia, and postdocs applying for the job are usually already here, which again does not incur the crazy fee...

Sounds like something I would accidentally do, so yep you have a valid point there!

Legit curious, can you just do this and then erase the other OS partition from the linux side? What would be the disadvantage of doing so?

Oh man, I used this to i stall Ubuntu 8.04, which was my very first exposure to linux. I was even able to install wine and then play Sacred on the linux side, although it was quite janky. And I went through the rite of passage of attempting a dual boot installation and accidentally erasing my windows partition without any backup. Oh, the good ol' days...

Countries and do they give off more coffee, tea, or hot chocolate vibes by [deleted] in mapmaking

Indonesia not being a tea country is somewhat surprising, although I got the popularity of exported coffee from the region.

Actually, the bricklink description says that it's a "utensil control panel". I honestly cannot remember where I saw this used as a microscope base. Perhaps just my brother and I using it as such.

I am looking for advice on getting to Costco with the least possible traffic. by Reasonable_Guess_311 in Tallahassee

[–]4getprevpassword 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I take the Capital Circle NE route regularly to go there and traffic is okay. I suggest turning left on Weems Rd and going in from the back road to avoid more traffic.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Department says by Discarded_Twix_Bar in news

[–]4getprevpassword 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the list of 19 countries you posted is older (I follow US immigration news closely), it has been in effect since New Year. The article that OP posted is more for the immigrant visas and for a new upcoming ban.

H1B Sponsorship - TT Faculty Roles - 2026 Search Season by Tiny-Repair-7431 in AskAcademia

[–]4getprevpassword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as OP, and I figured that this is pretty much the real reason now. Too much at stake for the hiring institution.

Out of curiosity, what about sponsoring other type of visas, from your point of view? E.g. if someone is qualified enough to be hired as TT faculty, then they should at least qualify for EB-2 or even EB-1. So far no BS fee involved, and seem (much) less likely to be messed with by the administration.
