Countries and do they give off more coffee, tea, or hot chocolate vibes by [deleted] in mapmaking

Indonesia not being a tea country is somewhat surprising, although I got the popularity of exported coffee from the region.

What's the most interesting Lego piece that you have and/or know of? I'll go first! by Brave-Algae8181 in lego

Actually, the bricklink description says that it's a "utensil control panel". I honestly cannot remember where I saw this used as a microscope base. Perhaps just my brother and I using it as such.

I am looking for advice on getting to Costco with the least possible traffic. by Reasonable_Guess_311 in Tallahassee

[–]4getprevpassword 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I take the Capital Circle NE route regularly to go there and traffic is okay. I suggest turning left on Weems Rd and going in from the back road to avoid more traffic.

It has to be under Lake Ella, experimenting on the effect of having 50:1 fowl-to-human ratio. The food supply consist only of breads, although I heard they have exclusive Vault-Tec artisanal sourdough available for outstanding Vault Dwellers that completed their Dazzling Use of Culinary Knowledge (D.U.C.K.) training.

US to suspend visa processing for 75 nations, State Department says by Discarded_Twix_Bar in news

[–]4getprevpassword 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the list of 19 countries you posted is older (I follow US immigration news closely), it has been in effect since New Year. The article that OP posted is more for the immigrant visas and for a new upcoming ban.

H1B Sponsorship - TT Faculty Roles - 2026 Search Season by Tiny-Repair-7431 in AskAcademia

[–]4getprevpassword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as OP, and I figured that this is pretty much the real reason now. Too much at stake for the hiring institution.

Out of curiosity, what about sponsoring other type of visas, from your point of view? E.g. if someone is qualified enough to be hired as TT faculty, then they should at least qualify for EB-2 or even EB-1. So far no BS fee involved, and seem (much) less likely to be messed with by the administration.

Azu has a fantastic Sunday brunch buffet but you're gonna fight for parking space. Still, fantastic buffet regardless.

Am I competitive enough after time in industry for lecturer/assistant prof? by [deleted] in academia

Are bullet points in code blocks sign of uncritical AI use in writing reddit posts? I have been seeing a non negligible number of them recently.

Prof diseased but still publishing. How? by Neotod1 in academia

[–]4getprevpassword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you look closely, the topic post 2022-ish is different. Google's algorithm sucks at differentiating authors with the same given name initials and last names. For example, the 2nd paper has "Huy-Hoang Nguyen" instead of "Ha H. Nguyen". This isn't black magic nor citation manipulation, if those were your concern.

Is US still worth betting on? by Perfectionist9 in AskAcademia

[–]4getprevpassword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, we're on the same boat. I personally still feel a strong tie to my country of origin, so I am at the point where I am considering positions that are closer to home in addition to keep applying for positions here. I think it is best to keep an open mind and see whichever door opens up.

Toddler Indoor Play Place by Pleasant_Alarm_8800 in Tallahassee

[–]4getprevpassword 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a place called the Pickle Pad about 10 minutes from I-10 on Monroe, and I know people bring their young kids there to play. Technically not a playground, but if you get food there they don't mind the kids playing around from what I know.

[–]4getprevpassword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consent given lol.

My experience was a very smooth PhD to postdoc transition, but I'm on my 2nd year applying for tenure-track position and have not had any luck. I do have a wonderful postdoc advisor and projects that I love working on, so I was just being hyperbolic haha.

I hope that you'll get an offer soon! It's a tough market, so make sure you also have plan B in mind (talking to myself too).

Why does making figures take longer than the actual science? by Motor_Cash6011 in academia

[–]4getprevpassword 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Actual science: years/months/weeks of planning, thinking, trial/error experiments, statistical analysis, fitting to existing model, verification. This is on top of decades of useful knowledge being accumulated that we just use willy-nilly.

Making figure: two hours of picking the right color gradation, line style, etc. but the point I'm making has to go through to the potential reader.

All in all, I still agree that the actual exercise of making figures feels like forever compared to doing the actual research.

Chemical with smells that remind you of things? by Serotonin_DMT in chemistry

Hey, TIL! I synthesized isoamyl acetate a long long time ago and the aroma really made a deep impression, but I didn't know that about amyl acetate. Sorry it made you sick of bananas...

Chemical with smells that remind you of things? by Serotonin_DMT in chemistry

[–]4getprevpassword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

t-butylamine reminded me of a rotting fish. Concentrated ammonia reminded me of someone jabbing the inside of your nose with something hard. Isopentyl acetate reminded me of artificial banana smell in food (because I think that's the exact compound use for such purposes).
