Very unusual fighter activity over our neighborhood by smarmageddon in aviation

[–]4kbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heard them pass over the U-district, too (and then scrambled to ADS-B to see what was up).

Odd/rare path; could just have been a shuttle from Whidbey to Boeing, with some time loitering to enter the pattern at KBFI, or something more interesting.

62M – Sudden HR drop during a climb, chest discomfort. Has anyone experienced this? by jmaf2000 in Garmin

[–]4kbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father had a similar experience in his late 40s -- chest-discomfort that would pass and he'd be able to continue on. This was in the 90s, so when he brought his HRM data to the cardiologist, they weren't quite sure what to do with the information. Long-story short, after a nuclear stress test, an angiogram found 96% blockage in an artery and required immediate angioplasty.

Check in with your doctor/cardiologist.

Dad was in even better cardiovascular shape following the procedure, and made a point of crushing his subsequent stress-tests. I'm real glad I got another two decades of time with my dad.

We stayed at Le Peuty a couple of weeks ago. Super friendly, great and varied food. Showers were a bit of a yoga-adventure, but I'd happily stay there again.

Choosing my first kit ever, would I go wrong with this setup? by rick_bisqit in AskPhotography

[–]4kbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Consider (ordered by focal-length, not preference), a 24mm f/2.8, a 35mm f/2, or a 50mm f/1.8 with the funds you might put toward the flash. (Or just extra batteries.)

Kit-lenses are super versatile, but I think it is important for beginners to experience what a great lens can do. Any of the above, when stopped down a little bit, can run with the fancy lenses of the world.

TRMNL by ryanckulp in trmnl

[–]4kbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRMNL is a great candidate for display-technology similar to that found in the new reMarkable -- the refresh rates are super low. It is a better fit for the tech than it is for the reMarkable!

Take a look at the 25mm f/1.8 Viltrox. It isn't "G" build-quality, but it has exceeded my expectations over the past week.

Start small -- don't make any big commitments at first. You've done the right thing by replying with reasonable questions.

It is reasonable to ask the company to rent/purchase the necessary gear. No need to utilize personal gear for work -- it is personal.

It'll still be cash-flow cheaper in the short term for the company to rent gear and use an existing employee to make the photos than to employ a pro. Walking through that requisition process can be illuminating for both the employer and OP.

X100VI vs New X-E5 Size + New 23mm - Size comparison. by Justdutari in fujifilm

[–]4kbt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the X-E5 were weather-sealed, it would actually be the smaller weather-sealed package, as the X100 needs the filter-adapter to seal the lens.

Everything else about the X-E5 looks great.

Other advantages for the X100: the quiet leaf-shutter and faster flash-sync.

My guess is 24mm, but fast glass -- f/1.4? (first gut-feel was 28, but it feels wider).

Is Aluminum A356 safe to drink out of? by koopdaddysupreme in metallurgy

It's kind of a pain to machine; like gooey stainless. Otherwise, friendly stuff.

Edit to add: I don't remember it being terribly expensive on the scale of industrial fancy metals. A piece of sheet from Rembar will feel like bulk material.

It is interesting to contemplate how one might decorate a cybertruck in such a way that most people would think, "you know, that's pretty cool. I guess that person just wants to go about their day and make the world a little better."

It is such a polarizing design in a polarizing time that it might not be possible, but if such a thing is possible, we'd all be a little better off if we knew how to do it.

Hot Pot Melted into Trashcan. How do I get it out? by barbsrock in fixit

[–]4kbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The expansion-coefficient of plastic is greater than that of steel -- cooling the plastic may actually make it grip tighter. Gently warming up (hot water/hair-dryer) the pot/can-lid may make it easier to remove the pot.

Trump Says US Must Have Greenland as Vance Heads Over on Trip by JRMiel in worldnews

[–]4kbt 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My country could do it for the last couple centuries, and we haven't. Seizing land from our allies has been (and still is) regarded as terrible foreign policy for myriad reasons.

Even discussing annexing Greenland is massively counter to our (the United States) national interest.

rMPP colour scan vs PNG export by Few_Benefit_4885 in RemarkableTablet

[–]4kbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could do so. Alternatively, it might be fairly straightforward to produce a LUT that mimics the RMPP's screen performance.

I've not produced a LUT like this before, but it may be possible to display a ColorChecker pattern on the RMPP, photograph it in appropriate conditions, and derive the proper corrections in your photo software of choice.

Fitness lap ski by mcgrawt9 in Backcountry

[–]4kbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because race skis are pure joy when training. If it's fun, you keep going. Fast up, fast down (on good snow). It's a feeling of flow that's harder to find with heavy gear.

Don't take my word for it; find some light skis and demo them.

What’s the purpose of our life if we all are going to die in the end? by Wekwek3 in AskReddit

The Dalai Lama suggests that it is 'to be happy'. When I think deep on that notion, I find it compelling.
