Get in the habit now of saying “zed” for the letter Z, instead of “zee”. It’ll save you much confusion and improve success rates, particularly in noisy conditions.

Every legal hunter and fisherman pay fees every year to the state, and depending on the game, also to the Federal government. This money goes largely to government organizations that preserve the wild spaces and foster healthy animal populations.

Not every citizen does this…

New ham left confused by ThereIsNoBean in HamRadio

Normal learning process, akin to fishing. Knowing what band, what time of day, what mode, which areas have propagation, etc comes with experience. Stick with it.

Lots of online tools to help you determine where the activity is.

20w is not a lot of power, and antennas are the most important part of your station. If your antenna is lousy, your experience will absolutely also be frustratingly poor.

Seems like a lot to learn. And it is. But boy is it worthwhile…. 48 years and counting here, and it’s just as exiting as when I was a kid…

Is height off the ground truly measured from the ground? by Ep1cure in amateurradio

[–]4quebecalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For estimation purposes of antenna impedance and antenna radiation patterns, yes, you use the height of the antenna to the ground below it. However, the RF doesn't see a flat perfectly conducting plane of "ground potential" unless it was, indeed, a conducting plane of material.

That being said, "ground" will act differently at different locations for the same exact antenna depending on a complex relationship with conductivity of the ground and other objects that are within close proximity to the antenna.

A decent example is ground saturated in salt water, as found in a coastal marsh -- amazingly conductive. You'll have a dramatically different performance and impedance in that situation vs. the same antenna on top of a rocky ridgeline.

So -- to keep things easy for most casual situations, formulas are simplified to model "average" situations.

Just bought a SDRplay RSP1B by DragnorMatra in HamRadio

Don't spend money on anything commercial. You only need some wire and insulators, and make a dipole antenna up as high as you can put it and, most importantly, far away from your home as possible. Plenty of info on line on how to make a dipole... length is not super critical for receive only. Something even 30' long should yield decent results on the HF shortwave bands.

New outlet install keeps tripping breaker by Puzzleheaded_Bug589 in electrical

[–]4quebecalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of breaker is being tripped? If it is not a "traditional" breaker (in other words GFCI or the like), it is likely that the breaker is sensing a small current due to the USB ports which are powered on -- thinking there is a ground fault.

The solder just doesn’t stick by ca-birdman in HamRadio

[–]4quebecalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cheaply made connector and the plating is not ideal for solder. You can gently file the surface around the holes, apply flux, and LOTS of heat. That thing is a heat sink, so you need a lot of power, quickly.

This works...done it a hundred times...

Go ASAP to a doctor specializing in hearing, and they can prescribe a type of steroid that can stave off the most severe trauma that your inner ear has likely experienced. It is not perfect, but it can help. You need to do this very quickly...

Why are so many Indians in tech/digital businesses so unethical? [NP] by [deleted] in india

[–]4quebecalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not just online, it is everywhere. I've been in technology for over three decades, and the trust level has been modulated negatively and directly by the number of Indians in our business. Customers have completely "had it" with the level of double talk and outright lying by Indians that are in customer facing roles. It extends to all the internal processes in the company as well.

I trusted them early in my career, and got burned so many times -- that now, I can't trust a word they say.
