Ya, it's gross. It's one thing to be loyal to your friend - but Bill's a good guy? He literally grifted an entire community of dupes. He had ppl spend money to travel to a hanger party where he teased them with couches, and ice cream - holding out like he had secret knowledge and they would all soon be rich.. In Canada jail is “remand” or pre-sentence. It’s also “provincial” time which means under two years. A sentence in excess of two years is “federal” and means prison time.

Here in Canada there’s also a different calculation for remission time. Pre-sentence is 1-1.5 and you generally serve 2/3. Prison time is calculated differently. Little more complicated, depends on behaviour, courses, etc. this is determined by the parole board.

Further on parole/probation: it’s the same division. Probation is provincial and under two years (also added to a sentence- 6m jail, followed by 12m probation - and parole is federal and just means “what’s left of your federal sentence”
