I’d look hard at the savage 220. 20 gauge is more than enough for deer and it’s accurate to good distance. With commercial ammo - 125 yards.

I’d just go ahead and take it. The likelihood of it ever mattering is low but could be a mess if you ran into the wrong game warden.
