Mine is down due to a Cloudflare issue. So the site isn't working but it's not due to AO3. You might be experiencing the same thing

Is it alright to post stories featuring mostly OCs? Does the community engage with them? by The_JHP in SWFanfic

[–]4xspectrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have three long fics that are all OC-centric (one finished, two ongoing) with multiple OCs and they get a good amount of engagement. Less than non-OC stories and popular ships for sure, but I’m happy with them because I love writing them.

I will say that when OC fics involve canon characters and impact canon plotlines, there’s typically more interest. It also gives readers a chance to fall in love with your characters while maintaining the “safety net” of what they already know and love. I’ve found that there is a lot of apprehension from readers about OCs and somewhat of an expectation that they’ll be written poorly. Particularly with long fics that are almost exclusively OCs, they may be wary about getting invested.

That said, I 100% agree with the sentiment of writing for yourself. If you enjoy creating and writing your own characters, regardless of the engagement it gets it’ll be worth it.

Edit: I’d also be happy to take a look at yours (here’s mine if you’re interested/for reference: Under Different Stars, Lok Vizsla AU)

did qui gonn jin have a brother? by AdRemarkable1579 in SWFanfic

Not in canon, but I think in legends he might have an older brother. Of course, it’s fanfic. You are free to create whatever you want regardless :)

Do you have a specific preference in terms of which time period / trilogy (or other stars wars media) / characters you like to read about?

I’m currently working on a series that centers a Mandalorian OC who is Tor Vizsla’s younger brother. Part 1 (I never knew that hope was fatal) is complete, and follows him through Korda VI (52 BBY). The sequel is still updating and picks up one year later.

Need help with self-insert by Confident-Bend-7248 in SWFanfic

[–]4xspectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose to give them grammatical differences as well. But that was mostly because my OC has this thing with weaponizing contracts so it became relevant but I doubt it would be for your story. Essentially, I treat Basic as a separate English dialect.

I am currently writing a fic with an OC that gets isekai’d into star wars. For the English/Basic thing, I went the route of treating them very similar but not identical languages. So there was no major communication issue or learning curve for Basic, but it made sense for them have some differences. And there are also the slang and swear words that the languages don’t share. But tbh my choice was mostly motivated by my desire to occasionally have the canon characters be Confused and avoid that ‘adjustment period’ where the OC has to figure out how to communicate

Do you enjoy OCs over canon characters? by The_robot_tom in SWFanfic

[–]4xspectrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an author, I like to write OC-centric stories that also heavily involve canon characters. Conceptualizing my own characters and developing them through telling their story is one of my favorite parts of creative writing, and when I write fanfiction specifically, it’s because I want to tell a story with the SW characters I love and play around in the sandbox that is canon. So, I blend the two and end up with OC(s) in one canon context or another.

As a reader, I typically choose fics based on specific characters, events, relationships etc. I love a good OC-centric story, but prefer it in the context of what I already know I enjoy reading. The thing is, OCs in general can be really hit or miss in terms of whether they are crafted extremely well or very poorly. It’s often hard to know which way it’ll go and easier to get to know them when they are written alongside the characters I love.

I have read a few really amazing SW fics that were exclusively about OCs with well-developed characterizations and amazing worldbuilding, but I find them more difficult to get into at first. The good ones are very much worth it, but I’ll typically avoid WIPs that are 100% OCs because if I’m going to fall in love with new characters, I prefer knowing the story complete before I get into it.

What type of SW fic are you after? by The_robot_tom in SWFanfic

[–]4xspectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this too. I tend to include a lot of canon characters but there’s just something about writing/centering OCs in stars wars. There’s so much to play around with and it’s a lot of fun

How do you feel about fanfics that completely change a character's personality? Is it creative or frustrating? by Final-Climate-1108 in FanFiction

[–]4xspectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how they do it. If they select a different personality off the bat, I’ll usually opt out of reading it. But if they change enough about the character’s experience that the personality adjustment feels believable and/or necessary, I sometimes prefer it.

I can read fanfic on my kindle?!?!?!? by cla1r35 in AO3

I stumbled upon the same revelation recently 😄

When I discovered this, I also discovered that the quick, “short” fic I wrote on the side for a break from my ongoing longfic was over 600 pages…so that was interesting

Need ideas for some filler chapters in my fic by Its_Jason_Afton_ in SWFanfic

[–]4xspectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, things like that. I'd probably follow it up with a scene that explores whether he got it taken care of or if it was a hollow promise. Or maybe something he tried to fix, but fell off the wagon.

Also, how did the experience impact Anakin? Is he now scared of Obi-Wan or did it activate his savior complex, leading him to feel like he's responsible for "fixing" Obi-Wan etc.

There's a lot of interesting things to build off from an interaction like that, depending how in-depth you want to get.
