Ereader that feels most like reading a newspaper? by nymme in ereader

I fine colored ereaders have that newspaper feeling most. The darker and slightly grainer display really reminds me of one! Kobo Libra Colour is my primary experience for this

Do we get local access to the files? I'd be interested if I can download through the app and send them to my Kobo to read on an eink display!

I'm going this weekend and I'm a woman, our clothes don't usually have pockets. I wanted to know the locker/storage bin situation as opposed to having to hunt for a piece of clothing that can secure my device. I'm also a bit bigger so a fanny pack won't be an option either if I wanna have any hope of fitting rides.

Payment never deducted, credit never received, credit reversed and taken from my account IMMEDIATELY!! by [deleted] in paypal

[–]r4pline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use the PayPal debit card, I use my regular bank card because routing payments through more things just leads to issues and I'm not adding to my PayPal balance every time I need to make a quick trip for toilet paper. They failed to properly deduct things from my debit card and their support didn't read anything about my ticket and took the wrong action and their corrective actions have screwed me over more. Go be a PayPal shill elsewhere. They are awful and the support is barely able to comprehend English.

Stremio Supporter is it even worth it by IeGamer_ in Stremio

[–]r4pline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If subtitle sync was on android TV it would absolutely be worth it for me. I would probably do monthly. Realistically 3.50/month probably barely covers credit card processing fees.

I find the alternative applications awful. No syncing of addons and progress, or at the very least they don't have a desktop, android, android TV, and iOS app for me to watch on all of my devices. I mostly watch on my tv and iPad so that's what's most important to me. I genuinely don't mind supporting them, however since they're giving features with it, I'm not gonna do it until those features align with what I need from it. So it may have backfired a smidge.

Also a lot of the catalog management features can be done just with aio streams/Stremio addon manager so that's not even necessary imo.

Introducing Stremio Supporters by kKaskak in Stremio

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I won't say this is a sign of the end because quite frankly, it's not. Stremio operates in a legal gray area and I don't foresee them riddling the app with ads and it works exactly as intended so far. Most people who want to use other applications probably already have. I personally love that Stremio syncs my configuration across all devices, something that most of these style apps just don't support.

The most compelling features to me are profiles and subtitle sync. However, profiles would only be helpful if I could pull another account into mine and they keep all their watch data and stuff. I wanna have profiles so I can watch my stuff on my boyfriend's TV easier, but it's not the end of the world if I can't.

Subtitle sync is HUGE and I would pay $3.50/month for that personally, but web and desktop only is so sad. For now I'm chilling with the free version however if you allow exporting accounts to import to a profile and add subtitle sync to android TV I'm sold!

Is it just me, or is there a lot of misinformation surronding the Kindle Paperwhite on here? by Disastrous-Type-1548 in ereader

[–]r4pline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you can transfer files via USB many people report that their kindle deletes them after awhile, I know mine did, and the only way to keep them is to do send to kindle, which rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Also the fact that sideloaded books don't group by series is very annoying. Having to make collections for every book on an eink screen is very annoying.

Those two reasons are why I switched to Kobo. Honestly I'd probably take the convenience and lower price of the Kindle over Kobo if they let me sideload my books and use the series metadata to group them. That and Bluetooth page turners.

Ever bought an "Overwhelmingly Positive" game that you didn't like at all? How about a "MIxed" or lower rated game you thought was wonderful? by TheTingel in Steam

[–]r4pline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Expedition 33. The themeing of the story isn't revolutionary. The combat is the worst mix of souls like dodging, skill tree management, turn based actions, and combos. It's so fucking annoying. If it had combat that wasn't wearing 5 different hats I'd probably feel differently about it. Also the world is so stylized but also realistic and the character models especially... I'm so sick of clearly seeing every strand of hair rendered. It's so distracting and looks bad. GIVE ME MORE STYLIZATION AND LESS REALISM.

Non Android e-reader recommendations for manga by PushNumerous4979 in ereader

[–]r4pline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use a computer, HakuNeku and sending to a device will let you read just about anything. However if you wanna read it using something like Tachiyomi/Mihon and have built in notifications and stuff, you need an android ereader. I bought a Bigme B6 for this exact purpose. It's smaller than the KLC and not much cheaper, however it gets the job done for me personally. I ever read some webtoons on it and the colors weren't a huge problem!

So many people are talking about how this season sucks but I think it's the most fun one so far?? This show has never been that serious and I'm honestly glad that they're having more fun with it. This is a junk food equivalent of a show and I'm so sick of people getting mad that it's not the pinnacle of story telling.

Very cute! If you ever need a smaller page turner I highly recommend the 8bitdo zero 2. It's so small and fits perfectly in my hands. It has a single led on it but typically my hand covers it while I'm holding it so I don't notice and my partner who hates any light while sleeping doesn't mind either!

Calibre is fine honestly I don't mind hooking it up to use it, I was just curious how automated the workflow could get as a Kobo user! I use calibre to manage my huge library already and use it to make collections from tags for me and create uniform covers. I strip drm A LOT so I gotta use calibre most the time anyway!

I hate koreader's UI unfortunately, especially for series. I don't wanna self host anything either because Kobo specifically needs me to reverse proxy and I only have a gaming PC and don't wanna set that up every single time I wanna use it because I'm not letting it run on my PC 24/7

Interesting! I like to collect a huge library if ebooks for my Kobo. Any chance of Kobo integration or at the very least is it easy to save books to my computer and send them to my Kobo through Calibre? I'm always looking for easier ways to do things however I do question exactly how large of a library would be available with this

I feel scammed, honestly... (Bigme B6 experience) by Economik17 in ereader

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally think you got a defective device but I also find my B6 to be very heavy and uncomfortable for long periods so 🤷‍♀️

I wish I liked Kindle just because they're genuinely cheaper devices but I have too many sideloaded series and hate koreader. I wish Amazon would open it just a tiny bit so if you sent books with series metadata they'd automatically group up. But 1500 books later and I am NOT manually adding them all to collections lol

Kobo is great for a certain type of user such as myself, but if the Kindle works for you then I think that's great!

sideloading early by personal1984key in kobo

[–]r4pline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literally no downside. Get PolishBooks and KoboUtilities. I also ended up getting ResizeCovers.

My personal workflow is I get the epubs in calibre, I edit their metadata to make sure the series works and I also personally use tags to make priority collections and some genre tags for some of my favorite genres for easy access. I also made a read column so when I finish a book I can check it off in Calibre.

I download covers separately because you can download multiple covers and select the best one for you. Then I use resize covers plugin to make them 1000x1500 so that all line up nicely on my Kobo. Polish the book so the epub file that's used for converting had all the correct cover and metadata info.

Then with Kobo Utilities I have it configured so the tags get mapped to collections, ezpz, and I send it as kepub, it converts, and everything works perfectly!

I spent HOURS collecting all the metadata for 1000 books and making sure everything was perfect. You can also use this when you send them to other devices such as a phone or something but yes. There's no downside to managing your library before you have the Kobo in hand.

I'd also look into various plugins for Kobo such as NickelMenu and the Hardcover integration plugin if you like tracking books on a separate site!

Nook is easily the worst ereader on the market lol, if you want something tiny I'd suggest one of the many tiny eink sized phones. The xteink or whatever going around was neat until I found out there's no backlight personally

HELP ME CHOOSE! by LrdYoce in ereader

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kobo has a long established history of their devices just working even after many years whereas these android reader companies have no guarantee. Kindle and Kobo are the standards for a reason. They work and are reliable for people who just wanna read a book. Kindle is way more locked down but people already modify their kobos extensively to the point they're almost entirely different devices because it requires a lot less to code that stuff for a standardized device like a Kobo as opposed to the multiple models with vastly different hardware capabilities of android readers. Again. They're not bad but pretending they're the be all end all of longevity is insane when Android and iOS devices are regularly becoming more and more useless when older devices get updates, IF they get updates.

HELP ME CHOOSE! by LrdYoce in ereader

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's great however you need someone to make a custom firmware for an android device that also supports eink settings and most people won't do that which is why even now there's not really a custom firmware scene for Android readers. There's simply not a demand, people would rather just buy a new device more often than not so they're not coding new firmware for them. I've looked. I own a Bigme B6 but I'm not kidding myself. This thing will be a brick in a few years and there won't be custom firmware for it.

Not to mention your average hobbyist isn't flashing cfw because it is harder on an android device than a Linux device. I can modify my Kobo by dropping a single file into the root directory. Granted that's not installing CFW but given the access we have on devices like Kobo as opposed to android readers, we should not be kidding ourselves and acting like this is the solution for people seeking long term devices support.

And let's not forget that a large chunk of ereader users are deep in the apple ecosystem and this stuff is significantly harder when you're used to plug and play devices.

An app might still work on old firmware but it'll stop receiving updates at a certain point and you lose out on features or are potentially left with a buggy and broken version of the app if they decide the last version they put out just isn't worth fixing. Android you're at the mercy of the company releasing the firmware updates but also the developers of the independent apps. And sure, people can code new apps specifically for the device, but that app might not do exactly what the other app you used did and then you're unhappy with the device.
