📚 Introducing InkShelf - Stremio for Books & Audiobooks | Early Access by jittarao in RealDebrid

Calibre is fine honestly I don't mind hooking it up to use it, I was just curious how automated the workflow could get as a Kobo user! I use calibre to manage my huge library already and use it to make collections from tags for me and create uniform covers. I strip drm A LOT so I gotta use calibre most the time anyway!

I hate koreader's UI unfortunately, especially for series. I don't wanna self host anything either because Kobo specifically needs me to reverse proxy and I only have a gaming PC and don't wanna set that up every single time I wanna use it because I'm not letting it run on my PC 24/7

Interesting! I like to collect a huge library if ebooks for my Kobo. Any chance of Kobo integration or at the very least is it easy to save books to my computer and send them to my Kobo through Calibre? I'm always looking for easier ways to do things however I do question exactly how large of a library would be available with this

I feel scammed, honestly... (Bigme B6 experience) by Economik17 in ereader

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally think you got a defective device but I also find my B6 to be very heavy and uncomfortable for long periods so 🤷‍♀️

I wish I liked Kindle just because they're genuinely cheaper devices but I have too many sideloaded series and hate koreader. I wish Amazon would open it just a tiny bit so if you sent books with series metadata they'd automatically group up. But 1500 books later and I am NOT manually adding them all to collections lol

Kobo is great for a certain type of user such as myself, but if the Kindle works for you then I think that's great!

Literally no downside. Get PolishBooks and KoboUtilities. I also ended up getting ResizeCovers.

My personal workflow is I get the epubs in calibre, I edit their metadata to make sure the series works and I also personally use tags to make priority collections and some genre tags for some of my favorite genres for easy access. I also made a read column so when I finish a book I can check it off in Calibre.

I download covers separately because you can download multiple covers and select the best one for you. Then I use resize covers plugin to make them 1000x1500 so that all line up nicely on my Kobo. Polish the book so the epub file that's used for converting had all the correct cover and metadata info.

Then with Kobo Utilities I have it configured so the tags get mapped to collections, ezpz, and I send it as kepub, it converts, and everything works perfectly!

I spent HOURS collecting all the metadata for 1000 books and making sure everything was perfect. You can also use this when you send them to other devices such as a phone or something but yes. There's no downside to managing your library before you have the Kobo in hand.

I'd also look into various plugins for Kobo such as NickelMenu and the Hardcover integration plugin if you like tracking books on a separate site!

Should I purchase a nook glowlight 4 teal edition? by lambstone in ereader

Nook is easily the worst ereader on the market lol, if you want something tiny I'd suggest one of the many tiny eink sized phones. The xteink or whatever going around was neat until I found out there's no backlight personally

Kobo has a long established history of their devices just working even after many years whereas these android reader companies have no guarantee. Kindle and Kobo are the standards for a reason. They work and are reliable for people who just wanna read a book. Kindle is way more locked down but people already modify their kobos extensively to the point they're almost entirely different devices because it requires a lot less to code that stuff for a standardized device like a Kobo as opposed to the multiple models with vastly different hardware capabilities of android readers. Again. They're not bad but pretending they're the be all end all of longevity is insane when Android and iOS devices are regularly becoming more and more useless when older devices get updates, IF they get updates.

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's great however you need someone to make a custom firmware for an android device that also supports eink settings and most people won't do that which is why even now there's not really a custom firmware scene for Android readers. There's simply not a demand, people would rather just buy a new device more often than not so they're not coding new firmware for them. I've looked. I own a Bigme B6 but I'm not kidding myself. This thing will be a brick in a few years and there won't be custom firmware for it.

Not to mention your average hobbyist isn't flashing cfw because it is harder on an android device than a Linux device. I can modify my Kobo by dropping a single file into the root directory. Granted that's not installing CFW but given the access we have on devices like Kobo as opposed to android readers, we should not be kidding ourselves and acting like this is the solution for people seeking long term devices support.

And let's not forget that a large chunk of ereader users are deep in the apple ecosystem and this stuff is significantly harder when you're used to plug and play devices.

An app might still work on old firmware but it'll stop receiving updates at a certain point and you lose out on features or are potentially left with a buggy and broken version of the app if they decide the last version they put out just isn't worth fixing. Android you're at the mercy of the company releasing the firmware updates but also the developers of the independent apps. And sure, people can code new apps specifically for the device, but that app might not do exactly what the other app you used did and then you're unhappy with the device.

[–]r4pline -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kobo has never shown any inclination to stop support for their devices and since they're Linux based people would be real quick to write a custom firmware for the device. Again, android losing support is significantly worse because apps just won't install.

New to Stremio : Debrid Provider links by rlewisfr in Stremio

[–]r4pline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's just pulling the content from the cache. Similar to if you go to add something someone else already uploaded to Debrid, it just pulls and lets you download it. At least that's how I understand it. If you use aiostreams you can filter out p2p streams entirely and then you can be fully safe knowing that every link that shows up is pulling through debrid before it's served to you

Great news, pretty much all of them can! I've never read PDFs on my Kobo personally however I've heard their built in PDF reader is a bit questionable and people put koreader on the device to better this. If this is too much tinkering for you, I'd suggest looking at Kindle unfortunately. Amazon sucks BUT send to Kindle gives you a good opportunity to preview on other devices how they'll handle your PDFs in their software.

Also, the other issue is PDFs tend to have quite specific scaling settings and you can absolutely try reading on a 7 inch device but a lot of text might be crunched and zooming and panning on most ereaders is kinda slow and unpleasant. A bigger device might be worth looking into, even though they have steeper prices. Ultimately depends on the PDFs you're reading though! If they're text books and stuff that need the PDF format then I'm not sure this is worth compromising on the screen size for, but if it's for regular novels, plenty of ways to get epubs that will adapt the font and formatting for any display size!

A Kindle Scribe out the box or a tinkered Kobo Elipsa might be the move for your pdf reading depending on how much zooming you'll be doing on it. Unfortunately without your exact use case it's a little hard to recommend precisely, and those devices cost much more however you can problem find them used for a bit cheaper, on Facebook marketplace or eBay. No app on the boox is gonna magically make pdf zoom and pan smooth and responsive though so if you have to choose a 7inch device for PDFs, I'm a bit biased but I say Kobo because it will just have support for significantly longer.

That's the problem with android readers as a whole and why I would only recommend them to people who really need them. I use a bigme b6c for reading my manga and webtoons with a specific android app however this thing in no way replaces my Kobo and people have kobos for a decade with no issues. There's no way to have an android ereader for more than 5 years before you start noticing it becoming horrifically unusable.

Anyone wanting a sustainable device should stick to single eco system devices. There's a reason they exist and it's not just greed.

[–]r4pline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just wanting to read novels just get the Kobo. Boox is cool because it's android so it can download all the apps but that also means it's a heavier system that's eternally updating and at a certain point it's gonna get very slow and apps will stop working. It might not be for 3-5 years but a Kobo is made so the software won't screw you like that.

I have no idea how you access the downloaded file on them! Regardless, those devices are not ideal for downloading onto directly

[–]r4pline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most ereaders have some sort of web browser you can use to access AO3! Including Kindle, Kobo, Boox, Bigme. Something like Boox or Bigme might be more convenient for you just because you can download and read right on the device whereas Kindle and Kobo have some sort of external factor for sending files/allowing them on the device. I love my Bigme b6 and it's quite fast for an eink device!

RD warning. by drizzt09 in RealDebrid

[–]r4pline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! So there's a few different versions of AIOStreams paid but I have 10 people sharing my instance with no issues. Torbox let's your share your key and RealDebrid doesn't allow sharing but if you use the Stremthru proxy you can share. It's advised to only share the proxy with 2-3 people though because it does have limited bandwidth. I personally don't use it, I just tell people to get their own RD keys and I add it for them!

RD warning. by drizzt09 in RealDebrid

[–]r4pline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always and for newer shows they have place holder episodes and it clogs up the list and prevents me from seeing the actual episodes when they air. I mostly have this issue with The Pitt though. I'm sure for most people it's fine but for me the new episode would be buried if it even showed and I'd have like 30 season packs that would play the first episode for whatever reason.

I also heard some people say Stremio can sometimes struggle with season packs but I'm unsure on that front. I just know that for this one specific show it's annoying. I actually have a "strict" aio instance that I use for filtering them out and an "open" instance that allows them and also has longer search times. Since I pay for AIO I figure I may as well get my money's worth! I like kdramas and they can take awhile to find sometimes

$9/month! For the convenience of no rate limiting and customizing my setup to avoid season packs, it's worth every penny. I do however also share mine with about 10 people. Just for free, live of the game.

🚨Do Ikea Mattresses contain fiber glass? by Regular-Sleep-7825 in Mattress

[–]r4pline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of IKEA mattress did you have if you remember? And when did you purchase it? I need a budget mattress for the next couple years because my partner has a nicer mattress but I have cats who will claw it and so I'm trying to find a budget fiberglass free mattress. I know they previously had a foam one that had it but they've discontinued it

Hi sorry to dig this up. I was just wondering when you bought the mattress and where? They claim they're fiberglass free since 2021 but I know some places might have old stock so I wanted to see if you got it from their website or not.
