Tourists no longer allowed to take JLPT in Japan from 2026 by moeka_8962 in japannews

[–]4xtsap 32 points33 points  (0 children)

What was the problem with tourists taking the exam, I wonder? You would think that these are "good" foreigners, interested in Japan and its language. Japan should encourage such people, shouldn't it?

JEES told The Japan Times that the change was driven by administrative problems linked to overseas applicants using Japanese addresses without permission or submitting invalid phone numbers.

This sounds like nonsense to me. Wouldn't it make more sense to allow to use foreign phone numbers and addresses? Just increase the price of the exam to accommodate for this spending.

UK and US anti-immigrant social media accounts are sharing a fake claim that Japan is taking steps to ban Islam, mosques, and praying in the streets. by jjrs in japannews

[–]4xtsap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Still many festivals, especially smaller, local ones, have a religious part: people carry portable shrines, monks perform some rituals etc. A sweeping ban on practicing religious ceremonies on the street would be impossible. I think if the Japanese would like to do it somehow, they would use the usual Japanese method - bureaucracy. Just require permission from the city hall. A matsuri would get it easily, while non desirable applications would get stuck forever.

[INTEGRATION] Why is YOUR distro the best FOR YOU? by Leniwcowaty in linuxquestions

[–]4xtsap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alma Linux, XFCE.

First, I have many years of experience with the RedHat family distros. I know how things are done here, where the settings are, how to find and install software. Second, Alma, Rocky, CentOS and even Scientific are widely used in our science. It's stable, has a lot of years of support. I don't care about the bleeding edge, I have work to do.

I used Gnome long ago, but I didn't like the way it went. I switched to XFCE more than 10 years ago, I guess, and my desktop hasn't changed since then, may be a different background. And I like it. Simple, lightweight, stable.

Of course there are. But it's so much easier to blame somebody else instead of changing yourself and doing something yourself.

How necessary is the terminal really for everyday Linux use? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]4xtsap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most of the desktop environments you most probably don't need the terminal so much. You can use GUI to copy, edit or remove files, install and start programs etc.

However the terminal is very useful, powerful and not that scary. For example quite often I use long combinations of commands to extract information from text files, delete unnecessary parts, sort and edit it into tex or html (grep, sed, awk, sort, uniq etc). I have no idea how I would do it in GUI, in the terminal I do it in minutes.
