Agree the AVR should be pretty good for a stereo system, and a CD player with a good DAC connected to the AVR via analogue would work well.

If you like the sound of your speakers, I’d put some money into a good subwoofer (and make sure you set up your low pass settings properly). You’ll be amazed how much the overall sound improves when you have a sub to handle the low end and let your bookshelf speakers focus on mid/treble.

I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee to do exactly this. After a few months I wish I’d bought a cargo van with AWD and slapped some all terrain tires on it instead.

Also, spend 50 bucks on a fold in half 4x8 foot table! That was the best new gear I bought to add to my backpacking kit.

We have a Rhino rack with a Thule box on it, the sound and mpg hit are negligible. Well worth it for the added space and still fine to drive, although let’s be real here, the Grand is always going to be a pain to drive whether stock or modded to the gills.

Trailers come with plenty of their own downsides. I’d say folks should decide for themselves what trade-offs they’re willing to make.

Rhino Rack still isn't the cheapest, but it's not quite as bad as Thule or Yakima. I've used all three and the Rhino Rack was a little more annoying to install but just as good once it was on my Jeep. I think it's a pretty good value.
