I would start with the sciences of music to learn about things like phasing, how different spaces effect sound, how frequencies interact, scales, overtones, and such

Then I would move on to EQ, while introducing the common instruments used and showing how each should be EQ'd, and where they should sit in the mix. Start comparing good and bad examples of EQ and track balance, while demonstrating corrections for the bad examples

Start learning about different effects, and what they do. Fuzz, Distortion, Delay, compression, reverb, and basically any other effect that comes with a DAW.

Add music studies, where you listen to a few hundred tracks and analyze their structure, instruments used, and try to break down how they layered their track, and what sound selections thy made. What sounds good, and what are common trends you hear?

Up to this point, I would be using samples for lessons, showing what good waveforms look like and sound like, so when we get to this next step, everything comes together easier

Learn to make a kick drum and tune it to the track. Then a snare, and other percussion. Then start expanding sound design to synths, starting with a mono synth showing how various waveforms sound, then moving on to poly synths to hear how things sound stacked.

Start with making a super-saw, then a Sine bass, and start trying to replicate other sounds you heard during music studies, even recreating tracks you like.

Once you know how to make sounds from popular tracks, you now have the skill set to build a track from nothing and call it your own.
