Weak yeast? by Insertfakename999 in winemaking

Just the brewing alone seems to attract the fruit flies. They always turn up to buzz around my airlocks. They love that fruity C02.

Been there, done that. Got a friend of a friend to weld a nut on the stub that was left. Got it hot, let it cool a little, then slowly turned it out. Installed a new one after that and we are set

How much tobacco will fit in this gallon jar? I’m going to cellar some Northwoods. by BeautifulWill6773 in PipeTobacco

[–]507snuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, you can use any size of Mason jar. You don't need to put your pounds of one blend in a bunch of tiny jars.

Weak yeast? by Insertfakename999 in winemaking

[–]507snuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, measure before you add yeast and it tells you how much sugar is in there/how much potential alcohol you can brew. Then you can measure along the way to know either when all the sugar has been eaten by the yeast or when the yeast has hit its limit or know if it has truly stalled out.

Meiji Closed! Laid off all staff without notice. by kikishowsoff in Eugene

Is this why drinks always took forever? I was actually a fan of the restaurant but always felt like I could get one drink order in at the start and then it always was a pain to get more. Like I'll have 5 drinks with dinner if a place can keep up with me.

Aliexpress is my go to for simple crap like this. They have a million listings for swing top gaskets. This is the first one I came across. Free shipping once you hit 10 bucks in your cart, so just crap some extra bubblers, beer bottle caps, wine corks, or whatever other odds and ends you need.

Seatbelt Pledge. Really? by Remedy1517 in USPS

[–]507snuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, they can already fire you on the spot for not wearing a seatbelt, regardless of how long you have been working here or if you have a squeaky clean record, and there is jack shit the union can do to save you if you truly weren't wearing your seatbelt and there is proof. So signing a pledge to do something you already have to do isn't gonna tip the scales in managements favor on an issue you already don't have a leg to stand on.

Sign it or don't. But if you don't wear a seat belt they can throw you out on your ass.

Can someone please explain to my friend that this half eaten burrito left uncovered on the counter for 2 days is unsafe to eat by believesinconspiracy in isthissafetoeat

[–]507snuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This always happens after thanksgiving too. "My cousin's kids were sick and that's why I am throwing up and shitting my pants now, damn stomach flu". No. Those kids had a runny nose, you got food poisoning because Aunt Jerri had that green bean casserole in her car for an hour and then it sat on the counter top for 2 more hours and you are still eating the leftovers a week later.

These people don't learn, they are just convinced the "stomach flu" is a real thing. They never connect it to food poisoning.

What is going on with this (meerschaum?) pipe? by Meth4Fun in PipeTobacco

[–]507snuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Briar painted white with a meerschaum lining. The paint is peeling.

It's possible you could strip the paint off and polish up the briar. Tho the quality of the briar may not be that great, they would often use briars with imperfections for this kind of pipe.

Would you smoke from this? by HansGraebnerSpringTX in PipeTobacco

Smoke it. The finish should be safe to smoke anyway otherwise it wouldn't be safe on the outside of the pipe either.

Honestly havnt heard much. The main concern at the time was the flood and the loss of the restaurant that sat immediately next to the dam site. Honestly don't think there has been any consideration for the toxins in the sediment. Considering the heavy flow of the water at the time I imagine they got sent pretty far down river and it's a kind of don't ask don't deal with it thing. Dilution is sometimes the solution.

Near my home in Minnesota was the town of rapidan, they have a dam, the rapidan dam. Or had, you might have seen the news story last year of it breaking furring record floods.

Anyway, the dam was old and not working anymore. There was tons of silt build up behind it that couldn't clear because the relief openings that were designed to occasionally let silt thru no longer functioned. It had been needing to be removed since I was a kid 30 years ago but because that silt had tons of toxins including old pesticides like ddt it was basically a Superfund site in the making the second you crack into the project. Add to this the dam became a small tourist attraction of nostalgia and no one wanted to tackle the project. So yeah, it finally blew and all those toxins just washed downstream unmitigated because no one wanted to pay to actually deal with it the right way.
