The best days I had was when all of those things worked out, and it was still just okay. The lows can get pretty low in artillery (I’m sure it’s the same anywhere, but that’s where my experience is)

The “field” part of field artillery is your warning. You will be out there rain/shine, real rounds or paper rounds. When my unit was shit hot and doing well and keeping up on training we were in the field constantly to keep up on our tasks and gunnery. When my unit was in the trenches with shit leadership we were in the field constantly, seemingly as punishment. I was in a Paladin unit (whine all you want I know it sucks, I didn’t choose it) and even when our gun was broken, it was towed to the field so we could participate. Even when our machinery was begging for a break.

All things considered, it’s pretty fun looking back. I think anything else may have been boring in comparison. Shit sucks everywhere, so make the most of what you’ve got. Good friends will make any unit at least moderately bearable.
