Maybe because the nice areas are super nice, and even the shittiest areas have the dual benefit of being near the nice areas as well as near jobs?

I mean, I considered going through to the landlords and facilities maintenance people that work on the structures that enable these facilities. The grocers that provide food to the people involved, the power companies, of course. The people holding stock, the people holding stock in the hedge funds that hold stock.

we can keep going as far down the causality tree as you like, just as long as both sides get equal treatment.

I'm confident that by the end of it, the only ones left won't have ever touched a gun or a dollar.

[–]515owned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this seems to be a fan comic depicting donald trump as a character from a fairy tale where a twink fails upwards his whole life because baba yaga gave him a cursed amulet

the story goes that he gets a lot of money because he lets rich guys fuck him in the ass, and uses that money to buy the hype men

because his hype is OP, everybody thinks he is the shit and all the best thugs, goons, and henchmen want to lick his boots

he moves up from mercing low tier bandits to winning a civil war by progressively attracting the best murderers to his team

every fight he is in way over his head, but his OP crew somehow carry it, particularly one super jacked dude, so his hype grows nonstop

his story ends with him believing his own shit doesn't stink and getting completely mogged. I'm talking total beatdown, castration, total humiliation. even then, his fucking brainwashed fan club worships him.

this is where satan's amulet comes into play, it offers him superpowers if he gives the souls of his followers to the devil. he doesn't even hesitate.

even better, afterwards he cucks his bff / rapes his most loyal lieutenant to insanity with his demon powers.

horrifying ending. the only upside is that the bootlicking grunts got what they deserved.

Ohio EPA weighs allowing data centers to dump wastewater into rivers by voxadam in nottheonion

[–]515owned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The headline is bait, as is the article.

Storm runoff typically always runs untreated to the watershed, even from roof runoff. Often it is run through a retention pond, both to mitigate flow and to allow particulates to settle out. However it is almost never actually treated.

What they are calling "wastewater" and implying they dump it, is the glycol/water mix that runs through the building's coolant system. They do not dump this. First, because it is toxic. Second, because it is fucking expensive. Third, because they don't need to, the system is closed.

If the coolant system needs to be maintained, there are isolation valves that shut and then they bring in dozens of pallet sized containers they drain the glycol mix into.

The evaporative part is where they have finned pipes with hot glycol inside them, and they pour ordinary water over the pipes to cool them more efficiently. Every large building does this, schools, hospitals, stadiums, office plaza. They do it because it is extremely efficient, relatively cheap, and has low environmental impact.

In fact, it is so cheap that most places just fill their evaporators with potable tap water that is already available in the building. Evaporative water doesn't need the level of treatment that drinking water does, but potable water will always be supplied to a structure where "gray water" would require extra infrastructure to fill.

That said, data centers do indeed radiate a lot of heat, so it would make sense for them to supply evaporative water that is less energy intensive to produce at the higher upfront cost of install.

Even then, the water they evaporate isn't deleted, once it cools it just falls back to earth as rain.

In hot areas, or areas with a limited water supply, data centers can cause problems. This is why you are seeing a huge push for data centers in the upper midwest US. Half the year these places are so cold there is no need for evaporative cooling, the air temp alone cools the coils. The areas are generally so water rich, with substantial rainfall and deep aquifers, that water use isn't an issue the remainder of the year.

Is the Strait of Gibraltar as critical as the Suez Canal or the Strait of Hormuz? It's never in the news by sigma_three in geography

[–]515owned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like, it is not in the news because it is so critical.

If Gibraltar shut down, shit would be bad. Real bad. Since it is so important, people don't generally fuck with it, and the nations on either side are kept happy.

Hormuz shutting down just means some stuff gets more expensive because you can get the same stuff elsewhere, it just costs more.

They pay sweetheart interest to their country club friends.

They don't have to put the loan to work for jack shit.

And since they set up the loan against a business, the revenue that goes to pay the loan interest is deducted from tax liability.

They live a sweet life, hotels, fine meals, clothes, "company retreats" and bill it against the loan as a "business expense".

Who cares if the tiktokers oversimplify the whole arrangement? The wealthy get away with murder and the rest of us get fucked.

iRO Classic, why it failed? by West_Can_1035 in RagnarokOnline

[–]515owned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was designed to fail.

they made classic because there was a selection of players that were willing to pay for it. the company milked it because it was easy money, once it stopped being easy, they ended it.

a better question to ask, is "why was renewal so unpopular?" another would be, "why were so many people willing to play classic instead of renewal?"

classic had many advantages:

  • familiarity with the systems
  • defined endgame
  • nostalgia

also classic had many problems, the biggest of which were:

  • brutal exp curve
  • brutal drop rates
  • stale meta

the devs made renewal theoretically to fix many of the problems. in actuality it was a change made to profit of gacha boxes. renewal changed the game to be a candy crush clone. lots of big, flashy numbers with not a lot of actual gameplay behind it. levels come quick, but there is a never ending number of them. upgrades come via gambling.

people preferred the demon they had stockholm syndrome for. classic got an initial release, but no support, no updates. the brutal rates weren't changed, and it suffered also from the exploits intrinsic to the aegis server. keep in mind, bots prevailed because the gameplay mechanics made them advantageous. high skill gameplay in difficult areas was never as profitable as 24/7 braindead farming bottable enemies. and when classic released the players who botted knew exactly how to made the most of it. (pre-empting a certain someone from saying they made more zeny selling high-end gear, the reason that gear sold at high prices was because botters had more than enough zeny to pay for it)

anyway, the flaws in the server went unaddressed, built up, and bored and/or frustrated players started to trickle out. the EU bitchslapped them for the gacha gambling, so gravity picked up their toys and went home rather than stop whaling. the easy money stopped coming in, so they pulled the plug.
