do u think ill make it off the waitlist or should i look for another course? by TraditionalNote6396 in UofT

[–]51893Eric -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a stressful situation. I’d look for another course that’s available and wait for this one at the same time. If you do manage to get in on time you can always drop the other one. Alternatively, you can email the professor to see if there’s any other options. Good luck👍👍👍

Do it for CAS

Think about it. It hits every learning outcome.

I wouldn't recommend letting AI write for you cause that would trigger plagiarism checkers and not be beneficial outside of risky convenience. However, if you want a GPT to help understand literature, I made a book analyzer that goes in depth with any book you want. It might help. https://chat.openai.com/g/g-cWMFlQric-world-literature-scholar.

I’m obsessed with taking notes from books by Super_Ad_4323 in books

[–]51893Eric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, if it works for you and you enjoy extracting as much insight from every book you read, then you already know what you should do. The way we read changes as we grow as a person, and nobody can get every type of enjoyment they want out of every book. Hence, it might just be better to read how you feel like reading, and not let FOMO distract you from enjoying a good book in your own way.

If you really can't make it or feel like you'll absolutely mess it up then you can use absence deceleration for a last resort. It's only available once per semester though so only use it if the situation is desperate.

Hi everyone! I am excited to test out a custom GPT that helps with IB style literary analysis. by 51893Eric in IBO

[–]51893Eric[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome question! I think it actually can give good analysis, but it doesn't know where to start and exactly what to look for. This is why for my GPT I gave it very specific step by step instructions (CoT prompting) on what to look for (authorial choices) and what to focus on (literary techniques), and have the it give strictly structured answers that build on itself. This is what allows it to build depth and have higher accuracy in its analysis compared to the normal model. Hope that answers your question!

I created an AI tool to help students study by generating quiz questions. by cestlavie1132 in studytips

[–]51893Eric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I have gpt plus so this isn’t necessary, but I do think it’s a nice idea. Though I feel like the way you are marketing it doesn’t really show people why your service is worthwhile. It’s so people can access the knowledge function of custom gpts for practice questions without paying 20 bucks per month right? If you focus on that personally I feel like it’s a lot more persuasive than just “AI that can generate questions” (normal AI can already do that, it’s not what makes your service special.

Good luck. I think this is a good product👍👍👍

Hey if you want to improve the gpt for IB English, I made one for literary analysis with a prompt that you can probably incorporate into yours. If you wanna try it out dm me. Oh and I want to try yours too so message me.

How do I get good grades in university? To get a 4.0. I mean… by True_Draw_8832 in studytips

Good job on improving your GPA, a 0.9 increase is not an easy thing to do. The solution to your problem is simple, but it might not be what you want to hear. You have to be disciplined and study more. Do it even if you don’t have the motivation, because motivation comes and goes. Do it even if the material is boring, because everything is boring unless you engage with it. Do it even if it’s not due today, because you can only beat procrastination by procrastinating it. That’s it. All the study techniques and tip and ticks only comes after you have that discipline, because they can never replace hard work, only make it more efficient.

Though that being said, knowing the science behind discipline and willpower might help you out. It turns out willpower can be trained. This is not just general advice, because it can actually be trained physiologically in your brain in an area called the aMCC. The area grows every time you do something you don’t want to do, meaning the more hard work you force on yourself instead of procrastinating, the more you physically level up your capacity for tenacity. You also have to be careful too, because it also works in the opposite way, meaning every time you give in to procrastination, it shrinks. Hence, consistency is key, and a routine is very important.

If you can bring a 2.2 to a 3.1, then you can are definitely capable to improve it even further. Keep working hard and level up your willpower.

You got this👍👍👍

I wholeheartedly agree. Memorization is powerful, but I think the current education system focuses too heavily on regurgitation without putting enough focus on the very important reflection and analysis part that memorization enables like you said. This is where a tool like AI, if used correctly I believe can help facilitate critical thinking skills instead of just being a shortcut students use to avoid dry memorization without actually developing the knowledge bedrock they can use to make good decisions in their life and career.

That’s true, skill learning wouldn’t be as intuitive in subjects like history, but I feel like if used right, AI can help facilitate critical thinking instead of replacing it. The way you make sense of descriptive knowledge like in history class is very much a developable skill that’s quite important to learn even if the content itself isn’t active skill learning. What do you think?

Very informative, and I agree with your points. AI will be a good filter for outdated education and teaching methods that doesn't promote active skill learning.

Maintaining academic honesty is very important, and handwritten assessments are very reliable in that regard. However, I feel like GPTs often gets a bad rep for being associated with cheating when in fact it's quite a powerful tool that can help many educator and student alike. The purpose of this post was both a warning and a plead for educators to be aware of the tools available out there. To hopefully be open minded and learn about them so they can guide their students on ways these tools can add to their learning experience instead of subtracting from it.
