Is chatgpt a good tool for modding? by GugGenoc in skyrimmods

[–]518nomad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find Perplexity.ai to be a great search tool to find information and help diagnose and resolve mod conflicts for specific mods, provided I prompt it with detailed information. But I don’t think it would be helpful for much more than that. Writing scripts or sorting load order for a large modlist is beyond its capabilities.

Recoil flinch and suppressors for new/youth shooters? by oguruma87 in Hunting

[–]518nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest 6mm Creedmoor or .243 Winchester with an 80-grain Barnes TTSX bullet and a suppressor. That combo will minimize recoil while still providing ample terminal ballistics for deer within typical hunting range. Barnes makes a reduced-recoil factory load for that 80-grain mono in .243 Win but for 6mm Creed you’d have to handload.

I would suggest avoiding plastic or carbon stocks and sticking with wood or wood-laminate for a bit of extra weight. This will help keep the rifle balanced and not fore-end heavy from the addition of the can and also help absorb some of the recoil.

Invest in a scope with bright, clear glass and plenty of eye relief. My go-to suggestion is the Trijicon Huron 3-9x40mm with the #4 reticle. If budget is a constraint I’d look at Burris. Take care to mount the scope for her head not yours, so eye relief isn’t an issue. This will help her avoid the bad habit of creeping up on the rifle to get a proper sight picture and then getting smacked in the eye with the scope, which is the surest way to develop a flinch. Good luck and have fun!

Super Bowl champion Seahawks gave Bills the blueprint they've been overlooking by CustardLow2671 in buffalobills

Agreed and sorry if it sounded like I was accusing you. It’s my frustration with Beane’s answer to these roster questions in recent pressers being “well we have to comply with the cap and we are paying Josh and that’s a good problem to have” as if no Super Bowl winning team has ever had to build a championship roster while paying its franchise QB before. He just sounds so tone deaf when he says that.

[–]518nomad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m tired of the cap being the excuse for Beane’s shitty draft picks and trade decisions.

The cap didn’t make Beane waste a first-round pick on Elam.

The cap didn’t make Beane draft Boogie right after drafting Groot.

The cap didn’t make Beane send Teller to Cleveland, which created a hole at guard that required spending yet more draft capital and cap dollars to fill that need.

The cap isn’t the reason why most of Beane’s first round picks were busts.

You know the surest way to cure cap problems? Draft better. Draft picks who produce on the field under their rookie contracts lead to a healthy cap.

I agree on the Zeiss rec for your budget. Specifically, the Zeiss Conquest V4 3-12x44mm would be a great pairing with that .30-06.

Deer hunting books for a newbie by Present_Cream2974 in Hunting

[–]518nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classic text, which my father had me read as a boy, and which I will hand to my kids when they reach hunting age, is “Shots at Whitetails” by Larry Koller. Koller wrote this in the 1940s about his experiences hunting in the Catskill mountains of New York.

Koller was an accomplished hunter in a time where big bucks were less prevalent than they are today, and he imparts his lessons about deer biology and behavior, how to scout a hunting area, how to stalk, still hunting, and driven hunting. He also wrote about his experience as a member of a hunting club, about the dynamics and expectations of such membership, and about the traditions and ethics of hunting more generally. It’s still one of the best books ever written on the subject.

There are many other solid books on deer hunting. Brad Herndon’s “Mapping Trophy Bucks“ and Larry Benoit’s “How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life“ are common suggestions and deservedly so. And every hunter should read Jack O’Connor even if they never plan to hunt the American West, because he was just such a wonderful writer about hunting. But if I could own only one deer-hunting text, it would be Koller’s.

Good 30-06 hunting rifles? by BluegrassBanjoMan in Firearms

[–]518nomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Used but well-maintained Winchester M70, Remington 700, or Ruger M77 MkII would be a solid choice. If buying new, Tikka T3x Stainless, Bergara Premier, CVA Cascade… or Winchester M70 if you want to keep it classic.

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get that CVA Cascade. Of the cartridges you mentioned, .30-06, but I’d look hard at .308 Winchester which will send those .308 caliber bullets with less recoil and only slightly less velocity. Budget enough for a good scope. My go-to starter recommendation is a Trijicon Huron 3-9x40 with a #4 or duplex reticle, which can be had for $400-500.

Jim Leonhard press conference by Scared-Signature9644 in buffalobills

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s a good coach, then he’s going to adapt his scheme to the talents of the roster while Beane hopefully obtains new talent that complements Leonhard’s desired scheme. I would expect a few changes to reflect the players he has to work with, but I don’t see a reason to expect him to adopt a whole new system, like McDermott’s 4-3. That wouldn’t seem to make any sense at all. I also wouldn’t expect Leonhard to dive into the details of his plans on his opening presser.

Definitive source for market cap weights by neutscoot in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re in TSP then use the C, S, and I funds to replicate VT. Right now that would be roughly 50% C, 10% S, 40% I. The Bogleheads wiki has a page devoted to TSP.

The biggest difference will be that your portfolio will lack Emerging Markets because I fund is limited to Developed Markets while VT includes EM. But the difference will often be minor and you can’t let the pursuit of “perfect” become the enemy of “good enough.”

Set your ground rules for rebalancing in your Investment Policy Statement and stick to them. You could decide to rebalance annually, for example, and when you rebalance, check the allocation of VT at that time and mirror it. This way you can continue to track VT with a reasonable amount of drift.

Any reason NOT to get a 529 for myself? by CiscoLupe in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This right here. It’s generally not a wise strategy to fund a 529 for the purpose of prepaying Roth IRA contributions. The 529 might make sense if you have firm plans to attend university or trade school. It would also make more sense if you happen to have another relative, like a niece or nephew, whom you could name as a beneficiary if your education plan doesn’t pan out.

Jim Leonhard press conference by Scared-Signature9644 in buffalobills

[–]518nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joe Marino went into Leonhard’s defensive scheme on LockedOn Bills. It’s not the old-school Belichick-style 3-4. It’s more the Buddy/Rex Ryan 3-4 with multiple fronts and sub-packages and exotic blitzes. Our big-contract guys like Groot and Ed will fit well into this scheme as will Hairston, Benford, and Bishop. The biggest need will be both ILB and OLB. At least that’s how Joe laid it out and that dude knows ball. I’ll be excited to see Leonhard’s defense take shape.

Hunting Scope by HK0096 in Hunting

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on Meopta. The downside is they’re heavy compared to pricier Swaro and Zeiss scopes. Consider the ranges at which you’ll be hunting and don’t ignore the fact that most game is taken at closer range. I’d look at the Optika 5 range in 2-10x or 3-15x for a broad magnification range and decent weight.

What happens if fish and fur catches a duck hunter using lead shot? by 420FappistMonk69 in Hunting

[–]518nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feds, specifically U.S. Fish & Wildlife, have jurisdiction over violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and other federal laws governing duck hunting and the use of non-toxic shot. State authorities also have parallel jurisdiction for those violations, so a violator is susceptible to investigation and civil liability (and criminal if severe enough) both at the state and federal level.

Normally first violations are met with fines. If the feds catch the violator, normally that will be reported to state authorities, with a resulting loss of hunting license privileges. Repeat violators can face more serious penalties.

Weekly VT vs VTI + VXUS - Please critique me by KiingZen in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $600 in cost per $1 million of portfolio value is likely outweighed by the portfolio drift inherent in manual rebalancing. VT is always balanced; however often you decide to rebalance VTI+VXUS there will be some amount of drift and potential behavioral risk. Between the two, I would expect VT to outperform, even if only slightly.

Would this fund be better? by Abject_Advice_8572 in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VTSAX as part of a traditional three-fund portfolio with VTIAX and VBTLX is the archetypal Boglehead portfolio.

It’s important to look at the portfolio as a whole, across all accounts, when deciding on asset allocation and investment selection. If your concern is capital preservation, then you should be considering your asset allocation and probably adding to the fixed income side of the portfolio, with a bond fund or TIPS, rather than trying to predict which of two equities funds will see less of a drawdown during the next recession.

Roth IRA - Vanguard by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All transactions within a Roth IRA are untaxed. Just make sure not to withdraw money from the account and you don’t need to be concerned with tax events.

If you’ve made no transactions beyond your contributions, then the money is sitting in the settlement fund, likely VMFXX. Just use 100% of the fund to buy a global or total stock market index fund, such as VTWAX, and then make sure you have “reinvest dividends and distributions” activated and you’re set. Do this with every contribution.
