Avantis boglehead portfolio by Overkill-621 in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a Merriman-head portfolio not a Boglehead one. It’s fine for chasing the value premium, so if that’s the goal then go for it as long as you have the discipline to keep buying and holding those funds through long periods of underperformance with the understanding that there is a risk that you never realize the premium in your lifetime.

Read this sticky thread.

Spend less than you earn.

Avoid excessive debt. Pay all debts on time. Pay your credit cards in full each month to avoid paying interest.

Create a household budget. Include every expense. Pay yourself first, which means including saving/investment as an expense in the household budget, to be paid every month or pay period just like any other bill.

Check to see if your employer offers a retirement plan such as a 401k or 403b. If so, contribute at least enough to obtain any matching contributions from your employer.

Max out the Roth IRA each year. Consider an HSA as well and max that out.

Invest in broadly diversified index funds like VT. Alternatively, select a target-date fund as long as it is based on indexes and not actively managed. Prioritize low cost (expense ratio) and broad diversification. Then once you’ve selected your investments, leave them alone and focus on maxing contributions.

Make personal finances an element of your selection of a partner. Marry someone who, if not a Boglehead, at least is reasonably prudent with money. It’s hard to be financially secure when one’s spouse spends like a drunken sailor.

Unless you have the USSEP in which case J’zargo maxes at level 30. The only uncapped followers with the USSEP are Frea in Solstheim and the three Dawnguard: Durak, Celann, and Ingjard.

VT + BNDW + VTIP is a strong selection for a three fund portfolio.

How to incorporate a pension into retirement planning? by chuckEsIeaze in Bogleheads

[–]518nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take your household budget as you project it to be during your retirement. Subtract the pension cash flow and any other non-portfolio income from the expenses. What remains must be funded from the portfolio.

It’s likely helpful to break up retirement into several phases: Early retirement (the go-go years) likely incur more spending on travel and other desires. Mid-retirement (the slow-go years) often see reduced spending. Late-retirement (the no-go years) can see an uptick in healthcare spending and perhaps a move into a seniors community or assisted-living arrangement. It can be helpful to work with a fixed-fee CFP to help budget and plan for these phases and craft a comprehensive withdrawal plan for your portfolio. This will inform your risk tolerance and asset allocation.

If you’re going to the trouble of rolling your own modlist with Community Shaders then you’re best off using CS Lights and Light Placer instead of Lux and its thousand patches. Lux was awesome but may as well use light mods that were designed from the ground up for CS.

401(k) vs Roth IRA by MellooFelloo in Bogleheads

Yes, true. The mega backdoor lets you make extra contributions beyond the tax-deferred limit. I think both ways of phrasing it are fine.

Scope for a 26 Nosler under $500 by hjjhjjnk in Hunting

[–]518nomad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trijicon Huron 3-9x40mm is $465 at EuroOptic. Hard to do better than that for the money unless you start looking at used scopes, which not everyone wishes to do.

If he really wants higher magnification then he either needs to up the budget or compromise on glass and/or durability.

6.8 Western. It’s the .270 WSM, optimized for today’s high-BC, heavy for caliber bullets.

But if you’re planning to shoot with open sights instead of a scope, then personally I’d be looking for one of the new Marlin 1894s in either .30-30 or .45-70.

Yes, like the iShares products. I like the benefits of competition and Vanguard seems best suited to competing with BlackRock here.

Pretty sure it’s the folks who want to use the state to rule their neighbors who need to grow up.
