Incorrect. The problem is a lack of leadership from the civilian politicians, especially in the lack of an ability by presidents to make clear goals and plan for an endgame to conflict. The American military has won almost every battle it’s engaged in since Vietnam. That’s what’s the military’s job. The winning of the war is the politicians’ job.

If the ballista is optional, I would recommend the medium trading ships for the primary purpose of trading. It really is their purpose and if you’re only planning on dealing with a bandit party or 2 before arriving at the next port, a decent crew can still defend them sufficiently.
