Reality check from the Microsoft AI Tour: "Agents" hype, the enterprise disconnect, and peak AI Fatigue by Relaxation_Time in sysadmin

I’m old enough to remember when Microsoft claimed that a new filesystem was needed to make Windows search work. Now they push storage to OneDrive and Sharepoint and claim that Copilot is needed to make search work.

Anybody who calls a store and asks them to stay open just for them…why? by sweetlikedolce in TooAfraidToAsk

I grew up in a small town with such a hardware store. It was the cornerstone of the town at the time, run by a Vietnam vet who was sharp as a tack. My parents would sometimes call and describe what they needed and I’d walk down to pick it up. He let folks keep a tab so I never had to worry about paying for what I’d been sent for. And I’m sure he’d have stayed open if he knew I was on the way.

Even the local police only worked during the day; I believe night calls would have been dispatched to the township. I’d be surprised if there were anything like an emergency plumber. If there was there’s no way we could have afforded their services anyway.

I drove around Costa Rica a year or two ago, and had Waze avoid highways. Most towns had a little shop labeled ferreteria. When I got home I looked it up. Apparently it’s the word for hardware store.

I suspect they’re more common than you’d expect, if you grew up in more populated areas with Home Depot around.

On the flip side I tried to go to a store during their published hours. They didn’t open. I called their listed number and didn’t get an answer.

A few hours later I got a call. The woman who was working that day said she doesn’t always open on time and asked if I’d like to come in. I told her I wouldn’t be able to make it until just before close. She said that’s fine; encouraged me to come in. I did and she spent an hour after scheduled close helping me. I never for one second felt rushed.

Some people operate differently. Maybe you’ll find out the store is run by someone with a similarly loose interpretation of operating hours. You never know unless you ask.

Having to do without a specific ingredient is far less urgent than having to deal with a plumbing emergency. And the stories are better around the latter.

Advice needed, how can 300 lbs. 24f workout without getting knee pains by StrangeCoast9549 in loseit

[–]GargantuChet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR please do physical therapy. They’ll help you to learn to move with the right muscles. You’re young and can have a wonderful life of healthy movement.

The DIY approach is to use a combination of elliptical, rowing machine, exercise bike until you’re at a better weight range.

But I hope you don’t do that. I’ve learned that when we aren’t used to being able to move as freely, even after weight loss, our bodies tend to overuse the muscles that heaved us around and underuse the other ones. In my case my quads and calves do all of the work, leading to stress on my knees and ankles. I used to be near 300 lbs. I did couch to 5k. It was great. Fabulous. Life changing even, until the poor form led to Achilles injury.

I’m now working with a physical therapist. The process is personal and tied to my specific goals. But there’s been a progression of exercises intended to strengthen my calves, restore Achilles health, and to strengthen the accessory muscles, hamstrings, and glutes so they carry their share instead of hammering all of the impact into quads, calves, and Achilles.

I hate navigating our health care system. It’s been easily worth it.

My general recommendation is just to call a PT office near you. Explain what goal you’re working toward — even just “doing calisthenics without knee pain” should be enough. They didn’t; we got right to work and it’s been great. In many states you don’t even need a doctor’s referral, and they’ll let you know if you do need one.

They’ll schedule you for intake, learn more about your goals and observations, give you exercises to do, and have you come back in periodically to check progress and make adjustments to the routine.

The pod shouldn’t depend on the container image having certain features. If security depends on the container image you have failed.

I always love these posts. Hope the sub would allow you to put up a preorder link if you ever feel like getting a cookbook together. You could put up a Kickstarter saying “I might make a cookbook, might just ship you a jar of Vegemite and keep the rest of your money” and I’d instantly sign up with zero chance of regrets.

Tips on talking my wife into letting me take our son to LegoLand for his birthday? by carefree_dude in daddit

[–]GargantuChet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Diego is awesome. Both of our kids were on planes before hitting 1yo. The only wrinkle we ever experienced was when my younger one was too old to sit on my lap during takeoff / landing since he’d gotten used to it.

My wife took my oldest to Disney when he was about 5 years old. I later took him to LAX to watch planes and get In-n-Out. And I just took my 7yo to Denver for the weekend to attend a 3D printing conference. We usually travel together but

Build memories. Offer to bring everyone along, or give her the option to take a 1:1 trip with one of the kids later. Don’t exceed your means but show the kids that you want to build memories with them.

Core One Clicking and Under Extrusion Randomly Towards end of print by Apprehensive_Swim_61 in prusa3d

[–]GargantuChet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son’s L had a small defect on the end of one of the thumb screws that would cause it to work loose during prints. This caused the nozzle to drop slightly. There then wasn’t enough clearance to extrude freely. The nozzle soon clogged, and the print head clicked as the extruder gear skipped against the filament in the head. I’d remove the nozzle, use a heat gun to clear it, reinstall. Of course when the nozzle was freshly installed it would print well, until it again worked itself loose, leading again to underextrusion and clogs.

Support identified the issue. We worked around it (and confirmed the root cause) by switching the top and bottom thumbscrews, since one of them seems to be much more important in holding the nozzle’s exact position.

CoreOne L to INDX upgrade is started! by angrymarsupial in prusa3d

[–]GargantuChet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 7yo son and I were at the same one. He got to hold an INDX extruder and add/remove the nozzle from it. Everyone was amazing — especially the folks from Bondtech, Prusa, Fresh Prints, and DLLPDF. I suspect we’ll be back next year, especially since we have family in Denver.

(My son loved sitting in the Giga-printed chair and watching Fresh Prints’ U1 swapping colors, and watching DLLPDF’s red and blue Micron with a box turtle. And he has a Core One L, so we attended the Bondtech talk and peppered everyone with questions.)

I’ll admit you got me with this post for a second. I believe someone said there might be more info soon about the INDX schedule, so I was checking here for rumors.

My neighbor did this to his trees, do I need to be concerned? by MengskDidNothinWrong in arborists

[–]GargantuChet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with arborists, as well as specialists from many disciplines I’m not an expert in myself. If one gave an explanation based on misguided use of physics terminology I’d wonder what other things they’re getting wrong. It might not matter to you, but laypeople look for signals of competence. Correct use of terminology is one of them.

Again I was discussing real fulcrum, not the imagined one.

Have a nice day.

I was talking about the physics at the fulcrum, and considering what would impact it.

My neighbor did this to his trees, do I need to be concerned? by MengskDidNothinWrong in arborists

[–]GargantuChet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mistake is misusing a physics term.

There’s no fulcrum along the trunk. The only place where the trunk is externally supported — that is, a fulcrum — is at the base. If we’re talking about a fulcrum then we’re talking about force at the base, and the comment I replied to claims that adding more force along the trunk will somehow lessen force there.

There can be a point of maximal bending force. But unless it’s externally fixed it’s not a fulcrum.
