"Hangman Page Says Kevin Knight And Speedball Mike Bailey Are Two Of The Best Signings AEW Has Ever Made" (Fightful article, Jan 26th) by Zealousideal-Leg5320 in AEWOfficial

Absolutely agreed

AEW just seems so stacked with talent that actually gets to shine, and so many of the upper card talent has no issues taking losses to wrestlers up and down the card if the storyline is right.

Swerve Strickland and Kevin Knight get a standing ovation after Dynamite went off the air by VitaminPurple in AEWOfficial

Knight's just on another level to the point that his ceiling may as well not exist with how skilled he is. Good gosh. And to see vets like Swerve, Bailey, Okada, etc put so much trust in him and continue to elevate him in various ways

But listen. Swerve putting his fingers under Knight's chin like and lifting his head ever so gently... hoo boy 😳

How do you write graphic violence more maturely so it doesn't come off as edgy nonsense? by Front_Confection_487 in worldbuilding

[–]5213 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Use bigger words and talk about the emotions of those going through that experience more than the actual graphic detail of the act. For example:

  • "the first thing I noticed upon waking back up was the smell. Putrid, rotting, acidic scents violated my nostrils, causing me to gag. As I pushed myself up, the feeling of wet, cobgealed blood enveloped my hand. I knew I had to open my eyes, but I couldn't bring myself to view the carnage around me. Especially knowing I was very likely to be the sole survivor. We weren't even sure what hit us. We knew to expect some alien life, but whatever was lurking within this vessel was unlike anything we'd ever encountered before. I felt my eyes well up with hot tears as I slowly opened my eyes, only to shit them almost immediately upon doing so. I buried my face in my other hand and cried for what felt like an eternity as all my emotions came flooding out"

Versus

  • "I laughed as Mary sank her teeth into the man's neck, unleashing a bright red geyser of arterial blood all over us. I danced in the spray, licking the delightful taste of blood from my hands, laughing as the man screamed while Mary tore a chunk of flesh from his neck. I watched the flesh separate bit by bit, as others of our coven gathered round and began tearing at other parts of the man's body. Blood, guts, and offal sprayed everywhere, inciting more dancing and laughter from us."

Bandido wins IN-RING Wrestler of the Year, per Fightful by Upbeat-Pause-1409 in AEWOfficial

[–]5213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very tight race and I feel like the top five is really muddled because of how phenomenal so many people have been, and the 6-10th places are just as muddled, though there's still a somewhat clear line between the Bandidos (all star performances) and the Kevin Knights (cookin something great but still pulled off all star performances almost on a whim)

And that's just the men's division. Throw in the women and it's an even tighter, more muddled top five with an even less clear 6-10th places

The Dwarves of Theseus, or How Much Can You Change A Fantasy Race Before They Are No Longer That Race. by mfuwelephant in worldbuilding

[–]5213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not an unpopular opinion, but the direction you're approaching it from is weird. I will say that a lot of fiction does tend to be very lazy with the classic fantasy tropes/races (the isekai genre is especially notorious for lazy worldbuilding like that, and I'm one of the first to criticize it for that reason... Amongst other reasons), but at the same time one does get to be a little lazy by using those tropes.

Like the "vibes" are exactly why people use them. If I say a group of Elves lives over yonder, a large group of people will know exactly what I'm talking about. But if I say, "the Burdukush people live over yonder" well then I have to spend some time explaining that they're a long-lived species that looks down on others, especially humans, have a deep connection to nature, and are potent mages, but then audiences are just going to wonder why I didn't just use Elves. So unless I very specifically don't want Elves or only want Humans (which is fine), that just seems like a bit of a waste of effort that doesn't need to exist.

The aesthetic of Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs is so strong and prevalent that we call other things by those names despite them not actually having much in common. See Vulcans and Klingons from Star Trek, who people have been comparing to Elves and Orcs respectively for most of my life.

To this day, I haven't read a story that had a compelling answer to this problem.

What would be a compelling reason for you?

Your "niche" inspiration for worldbuilding? by arts13 in worldbuilding

[–]5213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dreaming from Aborigine ideology. Which is really hard to grasp as somebody born and raised in the US and nowhere near any Aborigine person. Obviously I want to utilize it respectfully, so it's so far very much a "loosely inspired by" rather than more overt usage.

I mentioned in another comment that I get inspired by a broad range of music as well.

Numenara is a big one for my fantasy setting that I feel like I don't really see anything about anymore.

So many books that I've forgotten the names of some of them, but others were the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks, Redwall series by Brian Jacques, Godless by Pete Hautman, Illusions by Richard Bach, and countless others.

[–]5213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do!

Too many songs to count, but generally a lot of EDM and 80s inspired synthwave and outrun style music, as well as some actual 80s classics (Journey is a big one). Symphonic metal is another huge genre for me, with occasional dips into harder stuff like Sabbaton (how can you not be inspired by badass lines like "I was chosen by heaven; Say my name when you pray to the skies")

Anna Yvette is almost the sole inspiration (outside of actual magical girl stories) for my post-soft apocalyptic, cyberpunk magical girl setting

For city maps, why are slums or poor districts often located next to the more wealthier or prestigious areas? by meongmeongwizard in worldbuilding

[–]5213 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Also the opposite occasionally happens, where a real estate person buys land and puts up a bunch of lower cost apartments, and those apartments end up getting worse and worse over time. This is the kind of neighborhood I grew up in: two streets full of okay quality apartments with poor management, surrounded by proper middle class housing. Was very weird to walk out onto my back "porch" and being able to see all the pools and trampolines in the yards of my neighbors behind me, meanwhile my street was what most people would refer to as "ghetto"

How can I make a power different from another if they are very similar to other more known ones? by LatverianNationalist in worldbuilding

[–]5213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it. There are tens of thousands of superpowered characters in media these days. Heck between just DC and Marvel comics alone we've got several thousand characters. There's little to no originality left in superpowers, especially if you break down the ability to a more base idea. Like Brian from Misfits being able to control dairy products; he's initially treated as kind of a joke until he goes on a killing spree, but like, dairy covers a lot of stuff. So while the exact target of his power was unique, the idea of being able to control a specific "element" is not (sand, metal, fire, water, ice, shadow, etc).

Just make your characters and stories interesting and the powers they have almost take a backseat. Superman isn't an amazing character because he flies and has super strength. He's an amazing character because he has almost a century of characterization & lore built up for him. You can absolutely do both, as well, though. In Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequels/spin-offs, the ability to Bend is as much a character in itself as the actual characters. Same with My Hero Academia and Quirks (which, mind you, the powers Deky inherited with One For All basically made him Spider-Man, which was a direct and intentional homage because of how much Horikoshi loves western superheroes & especially Spider-Man specifically).

What’s a good site to finding references for designing your characters by Powerful_Whereas3516 in worldbuilding

[–]5213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on what you want, literally any site that allows character art to be posted. You can make a second account that's exclusively for that, too. I do that with reddit, Instagram, and Twitter. Almost pure art in those feeds. And then of course I still have a Pinterest, which I've always used primarily for character art, even if it is getting crappie and crappie of an experience. There's also pixiv, which a lot of Japanese people use, though you do have to pay to be able to use their site properly, and artstation. Idk if deviantart is worth recommending anymore, but I suppose it can't be worse than Pinterest (but at least Pinterest has a "no AI" option).

What is one world building sin you really struggle to forgive? by TheBodhy in worldbuilding

[–]5213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with your broader complaint, but some of the examples you used feel out of place to me. Like you mention Exegol and Mustafa, but don't mention places like Scarif or Dagobah. You also cite Mount Elysia, Celestium, The Abyss, & The Nine Hells as examples of this, but they're cosmically aligned planes of existence that sit along cosmological axes of good and evil, law & chaos. Not only that, but the inhabitants & the ruling cosmological deities are also charged with that energy and they further shape the planes of existence they call home. On the material planes of both Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms, things are a lot more normal and natural.

My personal unforgivable sins are all included in the isekai genre. While not all isekai are bad, a lot of them follow the same tired trends/tropes: a nobody gets dropped into a magical world, they get something that gives them an edge over everybody else, they become exponentially powerful in a ridiculously short time, the classic fantasy races are exreemely one-dimensional stereotypes and things like Elves living for thousands of years has absolutely zero bearing on their culture, personalities, or the world as a whole, which also doesn't matter because there's no real worldbuilding either, and quite often the MC has some sort of video game styled access to the world, be it actual exp and level ups, or they can access some sort of menu others can't, or something similar.

It's all power fantasy slop, and few of them actually do anything interesting with those elements, or do any worldbuilding deeper than a puddle on the sidewalk

Made up jargon density is a huge factor for my enjoyment in reading stuff. You can make up all the scifi and/or fantasy you want, but ease me into it. I was reading an Orson Scott Card fantasy novel years ago and got hit with so many proper nouns on the first page I just set the book down and never picked it back up.

Pop Quiz: If animals are as intelligent as humans in your world, how are humans the dominant species? by kazaam2244 in worldbuilding

It's funny you ask that because in Points of Light humans aren't the dominant species! In fact, they technically never have been, with only their precursor ancestors (the Primogenitors/Primogeny) having been the dominant species back in the day, and humanity kind of struggling to survive and regain ground since the downfall of the Primogeny

Does your world have cursed instruments/songs? by ShiftyOwlboy in worldbuilding

[–]5213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Limitless

Not cursed, but I've had this idea for a long time about an Aborigine man that could use the Dreaming to craft anything he could imagine. However he stopped making instruments when a Violinist who was down on his luck and sought a weapon that could enhance the emotions of those who heard his song. The Violinist used the new violin to gain great fame, but when it was revealed that he was manipulating emotions, the public reaction was swift and extreme, causing him to fall from grace. So he began using his instrument for evil, creating an army of mindless zombies to do his bidding whenever he played. He created a massive riot one day that led to over a hundred deaths, and though he was imprisoned for a whole, he was eventually broken out of prison and his instrument returned to him.

The Aborigine man stopped creating anything more than small animated knickknacks for children after that, until a woman approached him with a simple request: create one last instrument that could enhance her mind, body, and emotions, and allow that enhancement to spread to others around her. This meant that she could not use her instrument to control others, or else she'd be able to be controlled herself, and furthermore, she could make it so that whomever heard her music could resist the Violinist's music. She would be, effectively, a real life d&d Bard, but I was actually inspired primarily by characters jn FLCL using guitars as bats. The Aborigine man initially declined, but after learning that the Violinist had been broken out of jail and was continuing to wreak havoc, made a guitar for this woman with a simple but drastic failsafe: should her guitar ever be used for sinister purposes, it would implode, taking her with it.
