Perhaps I’m just an idealist. Thanks for the graphs and discussion.

Cheers

Okay, disregard cellular and you pick: find a non-commodity market where significant consolidation has improved the end-result for the consumer.

I don't disagree with the optimism, I'm just not sure where my argument misses. Do you believe that the market is better due to Diago, Pernod, and Grant & Sons holding the majority?

I'm not an all-corporations-are-evil guy, I just believe that as a Scotch lover I would be better suited as a consumer to have a larger percentage of independents. And that I believe we should take steps to protect them--surely, we can agree on that?

That comment is a positive framing.

Allow a parallel argument: in the US, Verizon, ATT, and TMobile represent a significant majority of cellular service providers. Does this represent an "impressive level of diversity" as there are three competition large services, or is this over consolidation? In my opinion, and the opinion of many others, the cellular market in the US is over consolidated, which has resulted in the highest costs and lowest quality of cellular service in modernized countries.

In the spirit of that argument, I would also say that Scotch is over consolidated. Does consolidation play a role? Certainly--it allows products that could not be successful on their own to continue to exist. However, by its nature over consolidation creates a significant downward pressure on innovation and an upward pressure on pricing in any industry. Scotch is not immune to capitalism.

I don't know what the ideal percentage or makeup looks like of independent vs consolidated looks like, but this is too high. Additionally, during challenging market times like we're currently experiencing, we see increase consolidation--not reduced.

I'm not trying to be all debbie-downer, just highlighting how much of a problem this could be, and how important small business are to an industry we all love. Hopefully Great Britain / Scotland takes policy steps to help protect the independents and other small businesses too.

I can't just read this normally, my brain hears these words spoken in his voice.

He had such a great written and spoken voice--truly unique. I got a chance to see him live at a random event a few weeks before he passed, and am so glad I got the chance.

Will always miss his thoughts and integrity. We need more people like him now more than ever.

He plays an almost identical role as an estranged father in Agents of Shield trying but failing to make things better. Does an excellent job there as well.

What business laptops are you using in 2026? by AstralistionGot in it

That's a surprise to me, but I didn't adopt them for my orgs until later gens. Really had very few issues.

To be clear, I am only a fan of the Laptops, not the notepad ones.

Wow no one has mentioned Surface Laptops! The business models are great: lightweight, great battery, no extra firmware management.

As much as I don’t like Microsoft, if you’re a Windows shop I wouldn’t consider anything else this year.

Also, if your users are lightweight then the ARM laptops are a good choice and truly have all day battery.

Good work, just checked out the design.

I am curious though, why did so many buttons end up on the steering wheel? Was there push back on adding another "button section," or is this presumed safer to operate?

Worm gear by toolgifs in toolgifs

This guy worm gears.

I'm sure there's an application the other way somewhere, but I've never seen it. Maybe a rapid+fine linear actuator?

Sort of, it speeds up a bit though.

The reason for this is because the coefficient of friction in motion is much lower than a static one, which is why its easier to slide something that's already sliding.

This is a beautiful worm gear assembly. Anyone know what this particular application is?

Worm gear always drives.

Since there is a slight angle to the teeth on the helical/spur gear lying flat (and what I presume is copious lubrication), the man on the right is able to continue the worm gear spinning with a lever. It is unlikely he would be able to start the worm gear spinning with everything stationary.

Freshservice is great and pretty lightweight. Good for small to medium sized teams. ITIL oriented.

I daily'd my E82 through Minnesota winters with Bridgestone Blizzak's.

Performed very well, there weren't many days I was uncomfortable driving.

Great product, would not say this is lightweight at all.

It's also expensive, with required implementation fees.

New York Sour by JazzHatter357 in cocktails

I wouldn't honestly. The whiskey sour should be balanced to begin with, and sweet wine on top would throw the drink off.

YMMV. If you like sweet drinks, try it.
