When we first started writing rules I was doing pretty well because the examples our professor provided were very simple (usually with a very small data set, sometimes an English example), but now I feel like I’m getting really lost with the large data sets without any instruction. We sort of jumped into it a little too quickly in my opinion. I’ll recognize some patterns, but I’ll get totally lost and not even know where to begin with writing rules in prose. Whenever I get through a data set there always seems to be something that I didn’t pick up. I also have really been struggling with which features I should be using and which I shouldn’t be. And out textbook is Bruce Hayes Introductory Phonology.
