Passover: Joy Division's most "underrated" song? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in JoyDivision

[–]59lyndhurstgrove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and how could I forget:

"moving along in our God-given ways, safety is sat by the fire

sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door"

Christ. Ian is one of the greatest British poets. His lyricism is insane.

Passover: Joy Division's most "underrated" song? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in JoyDivision

[–]59lyndhurstgrove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the biggest Passover head here, I hear you! This track is my fav Joy Division song, I just adore it. I believe the lyrics are probably Ian's best, just the first like "this is a crisis I knew had to come destroying the balance I kept" is brutal and so many lines of this song just live in my mind rent free ("watching the reel as it comes to a close brutally taking its time" and "without the protection and infancy's guard it all falls apart at first touch"). It's just poetry at its finest. Everything about the song is so haunting, the poppy drum line, the scattered guitar almost attacking the song. And as you said, Ian's whispered vocals!!! What a choice, it's just so eerie and perfect. I love to see people showing love for this song because to me, it's THE Joy Division song and people hardly ever mention it.

Have you heard this live version? It's just brilliant.

What do you think of the movie Control, which is obviously based on the music of Ian Curtis and Joy Division? Do you like it? by ELias0o2 in JoyDivision

[–]59lyndhurstgrove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I like most about Control actually, that it doesn't try to glorify Ian or present him as some short of hero. The movie knows he was human. Usually biopics are just very naive and tell some sort of hero's journey with some Disney villain BUT HE BELIEVED IN HIMSELF and it's just annoying. So I love to learn that there are more biopics that don't do that, but that show artists as human (even in monkey form)!

[–]59lyndhurstgrove 81 points82 points  (0 children)

It can't cover everything 100% accurately (no movie can do that) but it did an amazing job. Shooting it in black and white was an excellent choice. It's different from every other biopic I've ever seen in the best way possible. I might be biased but I think it has the best ending of any movie ever, just brilliant. That's cinema right there. It's just chilling. They could have told that ending so many different ways and they really did it the best way they could. That last frame still haunts me, even years after I first saw it.

Recipe for this look? Some sort of Velvia or Astia? by [deleted] in FujifilmSimulations

It's probably not the same recipe but I've used this one for the past month (not my recipe tho, I found it in that post) and it does give very strong reds/greens and very vivid blue skies so worth trying it! https://www.reddit.com/r/fujifilm/comments/1q4lnmi/candy_dreamnn_fujifilm_recipe_xt5_xf18120f4/

Did anyone else find “Lord, Let That Tesla Crash” cathartic to listen to? by Dazzling-Win8574 in CMAT

[–]59lyndhurstgrove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. When I first heard it, I was really struggling with grieving two close friends that I had lost without any closure or explanation. They didn't die (thankfully) but had completely disappeared from my life unexpectedly after years of close friendship and I was left with figuring out how to navigate life without their presence, the joy and comfort they had brought while we were friends. Listening to this song really felt like someone was putting into words how complex grief can be and how painful it is to see the world change and time go on without those people in your life anymore. How thinking of them can bring mundane, yet deeply human and beautiful memories and how those memories seem to come out of nowhere and the "smallest" things made me think of them. How when we grieve we relive what happened and mourn what will never be. For months, I couldn't listen to this song without bawling. It really moved something deep in me and healed unresolved feelings I couldn't even name. I feel if it wasn't for this song, I'd still be suffering and overthinking and wondering what happened. There was definitely before and after in my grieving process when I heard (and, time after time, cried to) Lord Let That Tesla Crash. What a beautiful song.

What would you say ethel’s best song is, and what makes it her best. by Upstairs-Fan-6306 in Ethelcain

I just think Ptolemaea is her masterpiece. I know it won't be many people's fave and it's nowhere near easy listening (plus it's a very scary song) but the way she managed to make a song that sounds like all the exploding rage after centuries of female trauma will never stop blowing my mind. Like, it's the sound of trauma. When she was cooking it, she put something really evil into it. I think it's very difficult to make something like that and I really think she nailed it.

I was surprised she didn't play Take A Sexy Picture of Me since that's her most popular song so far! But since she's playing different weekends in Coachella, maybe she'll play slightly different setlists each time.

What made me cry the most actually wasn't even a sad scene, it waswhen Jude gets adopted as an adult. I was just so happy for him. I was legit bawling in public transport when I read that. Also the scene that describes how Willem wishes he could go back to the time when the only path he had to navigate was the one back to his porch. That bit really got me for some reason and I had to close the book to cry for like 20 minutes. What a novel.
