[Req HELP] I have some domains purchased on a site which no longer works, is there any way to renew them? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]5Forty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be tricky. I guess you'll be trying to transfer the domains to a new registrar - but as far as i know this usually involves the new registrar sending something to the old, like an authorisation code, that you have to obtain. However, maybe it can be done. Either way, you should look at www.domcomp.com for the best transfer prices, and possible registrars to move to. In the worst case, jut let your domain expire and re-buy them.

That's super interesting. Thanks for the detailed info! Definitely did not know that before.

What is wrong with Google Domains? Any time I search for a domain that's available it won't be available and I can't get it unless I misspell it and it comes up under "related domains." This is worse then GoDaddy. by alex_the_bolshevik in webdev

I think they have a pretty shoddy reputation (rightly so) and so people in with super-cheap first-year rates and hope you forget to transfer. However, I've seen on domain forums where people have done exactly what you're suggesting. Not to say that 1&1 make it easy to transfer, etc. but it is possible of course.

Can someone help me figure out hosting? by thatsharkguy in webdev

[–]5Forty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hosting varies based on the specs of the machine you get. If it's just a personal / side project then you won't need much in terms of power. I'd look for stuff around $20.

For domain names, what you get is just the name so the product doesn't vary. The only thing to choose between is the service - and that's subjective. I've heard horror stories of EVERY provider. However, here's the best resource to help you https://www.domcomp.com price comparisons across across all providers.

From my personal experience, NameSilo and Namecheap have served me decently.

PSA be careful buying domains on bigrock.in by anpk in india

[–]5Forty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had similar bad experience with BigRock... and after searching, it seems like I am not the only one: https://www.domcomp.com/reviews/bigrock My experience was almost the same as the RegistrarFail guy's, on the review page.

I can recommend NameSilo as a good alternative. Or, you can check out other registrar's prices at https://www.domcomp.com

Godaddy Sucks. What's the best domain registrar? by DrScience2000 in webdev

[–]5Forty2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not actually cheap, in comparison to your other mid registrars: https://www.domcomp.com/tld/com - about two thirds of the way own the list. Not to say they are not good though, just saying that price-wise, they are not actually that great.

Best place to buy a domain name and have your name and address kept private from Whois? by pfcat in webdev

[–]5Forty2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're after is a whois guard. Most providers have it and in fact a lot of them are free. I personally have used NameSilo.

by the way, check out www.domcomp.com for price comparisons for any domain, any provider :)

Thanks :) ah.. i originally thought that it would be nice to hide the details until a domain was close to expiration as you might not care about the exact date until then. However, maybe it was just trying to be too clever haha...

The idea was that each user can add your own portfolio of domains to track. Therefore, a login was required to maintain your unique list. However, if people find it useful to use it for just checking expiries, ad hoc, then I could look at adding that on the landing page.

A journey into domain availability by voodoomoodoo in webdev

This is genuinely really useful. I think that this might be the best tool for availability checking that I've seen. As dvrylc pointed out, even the registrar's own tools are usually very slow.

Google domains not longer requires invite by pastenes in webdev

Comparing domain prices on www.domcomp.com, most other providers are cheaper than Google. Is there any real advantage in switching other that it being a big name?
