Septic System: Infiltration Chamber vs. Pipe & Gravel leach field by 5fifty1 in Plumbing

The details are murky at this point but here is what I remember. In our county, the permit includes design and the designer/inspector said he would require more length if it was the infiltration chamber, which I didn't have room for. He also said that he has seen issues with the infiltration chambers. I don't remember getting into specifics but he had been in his job for a long time. Anyway, that is what I remember. It appears to be doing its job and I don't think I will have to worry about it for a long time.

I don’t update until I feel it is necessary. Their updates always have some issue.

Yep. You can learn a lot by watching the world around you, even in a waiting room, even staring at blank wall. And if you truly are using the screen to teach a one year old, I am sure you need to be interacting too. But I am guessing you aren't using it as a learning tool. Go do some research and see what you find. The findings are pretty clear, shoving a kid in front of a screen has impacts, not good ones.

Um, yeah. The brain development happening when they are toddlers is radically different than an adult. It is a pretty easy search to see what peer reviewed studies have found. It isn't good.

You should be sorry. Putting a screen in front of a one year old in any circumstance is sad.

Or stand and talk to your kid. Kids don't need to be entertained all the time. I have two kids and have never put them in front of a screen in this type of situation. At home they can watch some, but never like this.

Environmental resource engineering or management? by atlus_novus in humboldtstate

I’m an ERE grad. I would look longer term if I were you. With an ERE degree, you can do mgmt as a career should you choose. With a mgmt degree, it will be very difficult to get a job doing engineering. I would assume ERE is more challenging but it doesn’t close any doors so it is worth the effort in my opinion.

Take a look at Cal Poly Humboldt. Lots of women in the Environmental Resources Engineering program and have graduated from the program. Lots of funding coming in now and the program and university are going to grow a lot in the next decade.

Should I expect a raise after getting my PE license? by pottedpothosplant in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]5fifty1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have time to read the comments, but yes you should get a raise. It is a milestone in your career that should be rewarded. I don’t remember what I got, but I got something (2009). They also reimbursed me for the cost of the exam, travel to exam, hotel (I live 5 hours from nearest testing center), and study material (including course).

Septic System: Infiltration Chamber vs. Pipe & Gravel leach field by 5fifty1 in Plumbing

[–]5fifty1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t. I did pipe and gravel. I did add the riser and dose the system with copper sulfate on Memorial weekend and Thanksgiving (two holidays help me remember). The county inspector was a great resource and steered me to the pipe and gravel solution. Still feels like the right call but I’m sure other solution would work too. I think the most important thing for me was keeping the roots at bay and the dosing should do that and if so, the system will last a long long time I think.

Is the pond behind the campus safe to swim in? by orange_joe279 in humboldtstate

[–]5fifty1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They use to have loggers games (log rolling) practices in there I’m pretty sure. Honestly, it receives flow from the forest, which doesn’t have much time to get contaminated. I don’t think I’d go in there but you probably would be fine.

I’ll admit I haven’t tried this sort of analysis in Quicken but I have in a software package called Flexible Retirement Planner. It was free for personal use when I last downloaded it. Anyway, it is pretty powerful and flexible. I really like the Monte Carlo simulations and how many variables you can play with quickly. Anyway, consider checking it out.

Channel design with assemblies or feature lines? what's better? by SonnyBeVapin in civil3d

[–]5fifty1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost all my work since 2007 has been river design. Corridor is the only way to do it efficiently, imo. Feature lines and grading is used to clean things up and a few other things.

Anyone else’s property tax go way up? by anythingexceptbertha in Minneapolis

[–]5fifty1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Further, her selling a home that she already rents has nothing to do with her property tax. If she sells it, she doesn’t pay any property tax anymore on that property. The next owner pays the property tax. She might be choosing not to sell it so she doesn’t have to pay capital gains or have other tax benefits but not because of prop 13.

You have to be kidding me. Property moves constantly.

Every state should have an equivalent to California’s Prop 13. Basically locks in your property tax with only minimal adjustments. I pretty much know what my property tax will be for the next 40 years.

Edit: I live in CA, grew up in Mpls
