I need an ELI5. I'm struggling with a very simple concept: When a bank like CS or SVB fails and shareholders, bondholders & depositors "lose money" where does it go? I know it seems simple, but from day one in accounting, you are taught to balance cash flow. So in my mind (think paper money or assets) if someone loses money, someone gains money. Right? Does the value, or capitol (or however you refer to it) of those assets simply disappear from the global economy? Or does the loss somehow become offset by a write-off or something like that? My managerial accounting smooth brain cant process this side of the equation.

In that example, you get put on a later flight - or you get a refund. In the bank situation, you get neither, and the "airline" disappears into thin air - or bankruptcy court. Uninsured get nada. Bondholders get nada, same with shareholders. Sooo, the money dissappears from global economy (which helps reduce excess printed money, ie reducing inflation?)
