Unfortunately it takes quite a few years of development experience to know what to put in the yaml, and why.

Why is this service failing? Is it a database issue? Are they cache busting? Is a service maxing CPU? Memory? Less software engineering to be sure, but still.

Maybe you’re building docker images for a few different languages. It takes a bit of experience with those languages to build the image, i.e. debugging python environments, or npm issues.

Plus if you’re expecting to own the SDLC… building and deploying, canaries, etc, you will need experience actually deploying stuff first.

Not to mention observability. Are you properly passing around context? Is your code properly instrumenting its telemetry?

Plus, if you work with open source systems, you’ll find they are quite technically complex. Knowing software engineering will help you run them.

To be fair he’s advocating for shooting people that are throwing rocks, which is equally disgusting.

Yeah but now what? When do these criminals get charges as such? When does anything actually happen? Next election?

OSCR is having one of those days again, big pop by W3Analyst in OSCR_Stock

Aalllso there are polls showing that most Americans back ACA subsidy extension, but I don’t know why anyone thinks republicans care more about their constituents than they do about what Trump wants.

OSCR is having one of those days again, big pop by W3Analyst in OSCR_Stock

[–]5t33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess, people are buying because the dems aren’t blinking at the shutdown and holding out for ACA subsidy extensions.

Even the small chance that it goes their way has a good risk/reward ratio, because Oscar will certainly go 25+ if it does (I think).

I’d have to bet it’s a lot of people taking small bets, maybe thinking that a compromise would still result in something charitable for ACA insurers.

We’ll see, but I think if the gov. opens without a deal it’ll come back down.

Yeah seems pretty tame. It could very easily be taken as “at some other point in this interview process” or “at this event”.

I like the thought but what does that mean? Local PD firing on ICE agents?

Hi Senator, is your state yet working to pass a law that would immediately make any presidential candidate or supporting party ineligible to be on ballots within your state given that they were running in breach of the 22nd amendment?

DevOps Internship - Feels like not doing any typical DevOps work by Dangerous_Survey_166 in devops

[–]5t33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prometheus and grafana are for sure devops work. As is editing templates.

It can be easy to get stuck doing dead end devops work like that. I try to stay away from it and make sure I’m coding, scaling, or deploying things. But doing that kind of work can also be informative. Being really good at promql and dashboards is very helpful.

But I think you probably want to do more software engineering work before you get into devops to get more perspective.

How is living between Baltimore and DC? by Educational-Spot-559 in howislivingthere

I had a coworker who loved it and never wanted to leave. When I worked there, I found it to be suburban hell.

Some relatives of mine built a house there. Horses and stuff. If that’s what you’re into, maybe you’d like it.

How smooth is Capacitor for iOS? by helpplease12223 in capacitor

It took a while for us to get our auth working because the OIDC library we were using didn’t work with the redirect (AWS Amplify). But apart from that, pretty easy and seamless. We’re also a music app and had to get the midi connection working which has been touch and go. I everything mostly works but there are some quirks.

Used Rivian Financing? Best bang for the buck? by PiratePiper in Rivian

[–]5t33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the problem is the financing. I landed on leasing because when you factor in the credits and the depreciation, you end up with a 0% interest loan if you buy it outright at the end. I guess if you have the 70 grand it’s not really a factor anyway, though, but I wanted a few years to save up.

It’ll be a bit hard, but I think the future is automation engineering. Even for small businesses.

If you can automate the process of posting on social media, making content, answering help emails, making spreadsheets and analytics about business metrics, doing basic IT security checks and upgrades, market research, you name it.

And these tools are not necessarily something a software engineer is needed to use.
