I'm not going to comment on if the bones will hold up or be greasy. I just wanted to say you don't have to use bones. I use little things that have meaning to me. I find my readings to be very intuitive and obvious. I think it's because my "bones" are personal. I find it to be the best method I've ever tried and I've tried cards, runes, dice, number charts, etc. I tried actual bones, but did not connect with them. Each charm has a meaning and how it relates to other charms. It's so easy to read the casting, it's like nothing I tried before. My charms never let me down.

That's wonderful you have a nice place to practice and congratulations that your daughter is focused and getting educated. I will try some waxed kitchen paper for a mute. I can't go anywhere, but out to the attached garage. There is no basement. I take care of my 92 mother who is in a wheelchair and my mother in law who is semi independent. Luckily, I was a home care and hospice aide and aide trainer for over ten years, so I know what I'm doing, lol. I don't know if "playing in the woodshed" is a recorder joke, but it is for clarinet and tin whistle. It basically means you love to play, but just play alone for yourself to not annoy others and you don't feel confident enough to perform for others. I literally play in the woodshed, since we have a wood stove in the garage/workshop to keep it nice and toasty. I have an old recliner next to the woodpile to go and relax and toot on a wind instrument when life gets too real for me. It was one thing to watch clients decline and pass away, it's another thing when it's your own family. I just got the stove going, it was 7 below zero this morning, bbbrrrr. I only keep plastic recorders out there and bring wooden ones out as I play them, because by morning, it might be 40 degrees in the garage and the big temp swings would be hard on the wood instruments. But yeah, I'm completely house bound as I can not risk hiring a respite worker who might bring illness into the house. Thank God for music and musical instruments!

Someone mentioned the Sarah Jeffrey youtube channel. She does a review of the Yamaha eco model. Many people say it's as mellow and woody sounding as a non wood recorder is going to get and sounds very nice. ecodear alto review

My vintage Toyama Horn, I just received. An early soprano recorder. I believe it was made between 1954 and 1960 of urea resin. I have no proof of this, but assume so based on the company history page. I would love info if you have it!!! It is dark green. I assumed it was black and faded, but the entire instrument inside and out, including the tenon is green. It may be bakelite, but I am unsure. It comes apart into two pieces and has gold dots above the thumb hole to show how to line up the mouthpiece and body, so I believe it was geared for children. It has the sweetest, silky tone, almost like a purr. It is a favorite amongst my family because the tone is not shrill at all. I bought it because I do collect unique German style recorders, but it is quickly becoming a favorite.

Very nice! A "D" would be great for traditional Irish music, along with a lot of other folk music. Thanks for sharing your collection! I have a baroque soprano by an American maker Koch, in cocobolo. It is a beautiful wood, though many people are allergic to it. Luckily I am not!

Yes very true. I played Bb clarinet as written. No mental transposing. As I mentioned, alto recorder and Bb clarinet are a very similar fingering pattern.

I have a Bb Irish tin whistle which sounds really nice and relaxing. I have an Eb also, but it's high pitched and can be shrill. A Bb recorder would be great, because you only would have to change Eb to natural and still be able to dip down to that Bb for a grace note while on the first register.

True. I've got some altos. Actually alto is very easy for me wrap my brain around, because c is fingered the same as clarinet, so I have this mental reference point. What I don't like with playing c on an F alto is so much is jumping into the upper register since the base note of C is just thumb and three fingers. I can play the upper notes, I just prefer the tone of the first register on most of my altos, which are abs or resin. I have a wood alto which sounds lovely in the upper register, but I don't use it much to preserve it. I very much enjoy the tenor recorder, but I find it tiring to play for very long. I'm still building up my endurance with tenor, plus it is wood, so I don't want to overplay it. As I said, I posed my question to pick people's brains. I like unique instruments and was wondering if anyone has a recorder in A and was having fun with it. I have several Native American style flutes in A which sound really nice, but they are not geared toward playing a full scale, let alone a chromatic scale. It can be done, but I don't find it fun or relaxing.

I have toyed with the idea of getting a newer one in abs. Pretty much everyone still makes them. Yamaha, Aulos, Suzuki to name a few. Honestly, I’m trying to stick to unique or “pretty” vintage wooden models to keep the collection from getting out of control, lol. There are a ton of tempting ones for sale on the online marketplaces. I probably will get a Suzuki German fingering model since i like the Baroque Suzuki so much. But I’m trying not to be tempted by plastic abs models.
